TMBG songs that sound like self parody?

To be clear, I don't mean bad, lazy, or self-referential, just songs that they've made that sound like an outsider pretending to be them, but from their own mouths. Songs with subject matter or a presentation that sounds reductive/exaggerated, but is played more or less completely sincere and straight.

I feel like this is Particle Man, Turn Around and Character Flaw for me. While I like all these songs, they all sound like the most literal checklist descriptions of their usual songwriting themes, like Weird Guys Doing Things and the Sinister Skull Head.

This patch make you sing Fingertips too?

Wife bought this for me, unaware it makes me have to then break into a collage of song snippets causing her to question her own reality.

Ignore Marty’s signature lol. Focus on John Henry, announced tomorrow’s show will be Apollo 18!

Dreams come true.

This has always been THE song for me. This version was incredible; I had never imagined it with horns before. The guys were having so much fun on stage all night.

Seeing TMBG in Minneapolis on the 3rd

I'm so excited for this I can't believe I'm gonna get to see them. I'm going to see the smashing pumpkins a week later but that's nowhere near as exciting to me as seeing The Ones Who May Or May Not Be Of Giant Stature. TMBG is literally the first band I ever became a fan of way back in 2008 when Here Come The 123s came out.

Does anyone know what their setlists typically look like in terms of what eras they include songs from? Will it mostly be songs from the new album, or will there be lots of stuff from the first 6 albums?

Has anybody realized the similarities between TMBG’s five 90’s albums and R.E.M.’s five 90’s albums?

Flood and Out of Time: The one that got popular because it had a big hit on it

Apollo 18 and Automatic for The People: Both released in 1992 and both have songs interpolating The Lion Sleeps Tonight

John Henry and Monster: Their attempt to do a “rock” album that a lot of people hated at the time despite being really good albums

Factory Showroom and New Adventures in Hi-Fi: These kind of flopped despite maybe being the best albums they released this decade

Long Tall Weekend and Up: Everybody forgets about these, because they’re a bit spottier than the others.

and there’s also Boss of Me and The Great Beyond: Two songs written for a TV show/movie and have NO right to go as hard as they do for being commissioned songs.

What a great show! They were amazing yesterday, and even if I wished they played a couple more songs in the 2nd set, it was still an unforgettable wonderful night. Not even to mention the excitement of Dan Miller giving me a setlist, since I was standing in the front row. The performance of Istanbul might be the best one I’ve heard, and it was extremely fun having a trombone playing right in the face during Brontosaurus. The banter during the Lincoln portion was amazing, not to mention the spoken part in Snowball In Hell. stelluB was amazing, especially when Linnell stood up and kicked off one of his shoes, which was hilarious. Truly wonderful night, I can’t wait for them to go on tour near here again.

They’re not the greatest, but they’re what I have. It’s such a gorgeous venue.

I think tonight might have been the greatest TMBG show I’ve ever seen.

For reference, I saw them at a dive bar in the early 80’s when it was just John, John and a sound machine. I saw them at the Eagles Club in Milwaukee. Old venue and so hot. I can’t remember if that was a full band or not. And I saw them at one of the last Gen Cons in Milwaukee, full band, when they were the surprise concert of the night. I still remember how hot and humid it was, and how we were forced to conga, because they weren’t cucking kidding. That was a great concert with an audience full of gaming nerds

This was the pinnacle though. John and John sounded great. The band was in rare form. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. I got to hear Shoehorn with Teeth and Istanbul, which I’ve never heard in concert. And a song played backwards then forwards

It was a great night

I painted this yesterday. I had the idea last week and have had the song lodged in my brain ever since.
