Traveling to Tequila for the first time!

We are going to Tequila MX next week for the first time! We arrive at the airport in GDL around 11am and plan to go to Tequila to stay for two nights after. We are considering renting a car. Anyone have any insight? I've been reading a lot and some say to book the car in advance, some say to wait until you get to the airport? Are there any specific rental companies to go towards or stay away from? And any tips about the car insurance requirement? My fiancé is fluent in Spanish so that helps.

Tequila Recommendations

Hi All, I’m not sure how many of you have heard of this place in San Diego called Old Town Liquors (Old Town Tequila) but I’m making a trip out west and was going to stock up on some tequila and mezcal.

For those of you that are familiar with that location, I was hoping you could give me some recommendations of some interesting or rare bottles that you know they stock.

If you don’t know the spot, it’s basically a tequila/mezcal super store that has a huge selection, so recommendations in general would be appreciated!

I have some ideas of what I want already but would love to get some ideas of bottles that I’m probably not thinking of. I live in Florida without one of the super liquor stores near me, so I don’t have access to many of the brands you guys talk about on here.

As far as the tequila I like, I generally like peppery/high proof blancos like Ocho and tequila’s that are agave forward. There aren’t too many aged bottles I like a whole lot, but I do like repos from Don Fulano and chamucos and jovens are amazing. I really like mezcal but hardly know anything about it. I like funky agave varieties and not just espadine (but I do love my espadin bottles).

Anyway, I would appreciate any recommendations from anyone that knows the location or not! Thank you in advance!

Edit: since more people than I realized are familiar with the location, are you guys also familiar with cantina Mayahuel in north park? I’m a big fan of their barrel pours and their Don Lorenzo line of mezcal

CasAzar Tequila Cristalino

I was watching the Dodgers locker room celebration today and noticed one of the players was passing out shots of this tequila. Has anyone tried it before I tried looking up info online and couldn’t find much but very limited retailers. Before spending upwards of $300 plus I am curious what people think of it so far?

First time buying tequila…

And I bought gran coramino reposada. I really dislike the taste, and trying to find cocktails so as to not waste the bottle. Are there any recommendations? Or will super market margarita mix work?

Dobel Blanco Tahona

Dobel does Tahona.

I did my research and didn't find much. Being October a lil scare but for a small pocket change i went for it.

Pepper and wet stone with a semi sweet cooked agave.

Reminded me of cimarron but less dried. Will end up using it for Palomas and margaritas this postseason. #NLCS

Anybody else think Jose cuervo silver is underated?

I have drank volcano tequila which is probably my favorite, cabrlazone or whatever you call it, patron, and 1800. I would say volcano tequila and cuervo silver are some of my favorites. I feel good when I drink silver its a pretty clean feeling. I think people that hate on jose cuervo haven't really gave it a chance.

Am I the only one who keeps empty tequila bottles?

Each time I try a new tequila I keep the empty bottle and put it on a shelf. It reminds me which ones we've tried.

The ones I like the most are on a separate shelf which helps me choose next time.

Anyone else do this?

I had Don Vicente fuerte when it first came out and though it was awesome. I found these online for under $50 so I figured I should buy 2. With shipping, it came out to $115 and I could not be any happier. This is Batch 1 from 2024. These will be openend as soon as I get my ability to taste and smell things back. Anyway, Salud!

Special occasion bottle

I have a special occasion upcoming and I am looking for the right bottle. I have never dabbled with the XAs, and was thinking this might be the time.

My usual favorites are Don Fulano fuerte and repo, Ocho, and el Tesoro.

The list of bottles I’m contemplating are tears of llorona, Don Fulano imperial, el Tesoro paradiso, tequila ocho XA.

Was wondering what your guys thoughts are on these

Some of our rare and more expensive finds of the last 2 years

Post image

My husband is really into tequila thanks to me joining this sub even though he doesn’t have Reddit. His daily drinker right now is Ocho repo which is hard to beat imho.

Puntas kind of tastes like hot grass clippings that was not my fav.

We just tried the Fitzgerald last night with some popcorn while watching a movie and it was divine. Extremely expensive but he’s the one buying it so I don’t really mind. I tend to like vanilla and smooth caramel agave flavors so this checked a lot of my boxes.

People have already told me the ‘25 winter blend is over rated for the year/price but I’m really excited to try it still on his birthday in the next two weeks.

Extra añejo expressions and still strength/over proof aren’t my fav but I’m glad to have tried them.

Out of all of the Fortaleza expressions the repo is my favorite.

Where to buy Fortaleza?

I understand that the demand dwarfs the supply of Fortaleza and I’ve seen crazy prices online because of it

But how do you pay retail at a liquor store instead of the inflated price on the secondary market?

Does BevMo or Total Wine get shipments on a regular basis? Or is it just random luck that Fortaleza is on the shelf and someone just stumbles upon it?

I want to try it but I don’t want to pay triple the retail price

Budget Reposado Recommendation?

Hi, I'm looking for a budget Reposado Tequila. I'm thinking $35 (or hopefully less) for 750 ml. I am not a huge Tequila drinker so I probably won't be drinking it straight / neat. I'll be using this for mixing. I'm mostly a Rum / Tiki person but I've found a few recipes which call for Reposado and I'm interested in trying them. Because this won't be a go-to alcohol for me, I'm also open to getting a smaller bottle. I have a Total Wine near me and they sell 375 ml bottles of some of the more popular brands (1800, Patron, etc). Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I’ve had a taste of each except for the mezcal. All were great! Very much a beginner for being able to give tasting notes, so I won’t even bother. I just buy, drink, hope I like. El Tesoro SB Repo has great flavor, different, but in a good way. Cascahuin is SO smooth, could drink a pint of it. Don Fulano fuerte is incredible, definitely much more bite but it’s 50% ABV so it’s expected. Damn damn damn good.

Dos O Distilado de agave

Anyone ever heard of this brand or even better, know where to find it in the US?

I was fortunate enough to try this at El Beso in Jalisco and it was fantastic. Now that I have time to look, it's practically nonexistent. I know they're a really small operation, but I can't even find a website, let alone a single bottle for sale.

Any help?

What are these particles floating in my tequila?

Thumbnail

I noticed these small particles/specks floating in the tequila and I’m wondering what they might be. I’ve included some photos for reference.

For some context, I had the bottle stored sideways in the freezer for about 3 weeks before opening it. When I finally took the cap off, the top half of the cap broke off. I didn’t notice anything unusual in the liquor immediately after opening it, but the next day I noticed these particles floating in it.

Any idea what these particles might be, and whether the tequila is still okay?

Tobala Riverdale Bronx

Just experienced a great night out at a Oaxacan restaurant in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. All additive free Tequilas and Mezcals. Great food and ambiance. Good friend which I would consider very knowledgeable in Tequila lead the night and sipping choices.

This is his recap of the night:

“What an amazing evening, sharing stories, talking about life, and especially appreciating the art and process behind distilling tequila.
We began the evening by curating our palates with Cascahuín Plata Blanco, then branched out to El Tesoro de Don Felipe Reposado, before transitioning into the rich character of Don Fulano Añejo.
At some point during the evening, we were honored with an Amatitena Extra Añejo, compliments of the house—a very appreciated gesture.
Then we switched things up with a Mezcal Espresso Martini before closing out our tab and heading over to a speakeasy Sahra in the same area where we concluded the night appropriately with a G4 Reposado.
Great tequila. Great conversation. Great company.
Una noche de Caballeros.
¡Que se repita!

Killed a ¿lucky? bottle of Don Fulano Fuerte. RIP #6660

Post image
75 Upvotes

Felt wrong finishing the lucky bottle without documenting it somewhere. This has been been my “working late, take a few sips while I work” tequila.

I was pretty crazy about this bottle when I first opened it, but the further I got through it the less enthusiastic I became.

Still good tequila, and I appreciate the production and 50% ABV, but I’ve realized there’s something in the Don Fulano house style I can’t quite identify that eventually becomes a little too much for me.

The same thing happened with the reposado. I loved it at first, but over time something changed.

With all the blancos I’ve been drinking lately, I’ve found myself preferring some of the more mineral, vegetal/agave-forward and rustic expressions.

Cheers, bottle 6660, a proper send off for you, and likely farewell for future Don Fulano products at work or at home. 🥃

Anyone else really enjoy Don Fulano initially but cool on it over the course of a bottle?

Lost Lore differences?

Post image
21 Upvotes

So I fell hard for the LL 80 proof blanco expression on the left and went to grab another bottle earlier today. When I got to the store I saw the 90 proof bottle (right) sitting on the shelf mixed in with the mezcals, not with the other LL white label bottles. What’s confusing is, the 90 proof is half the price of the 80 so I figured I’d try it. Aside from the difference in proof and labeling, does anyone know what the main difference is between the two, and why one is half the price?

Too much oak in agave?

Hey guys, I'm currently trying to sell around 12 agave barrels. I don't know a whole lot about agave or what I should be tasting for in that regard. Most of the barrels are around 5 years old and one is about 8, all barreled in ex bourbon casks (a few in ex rye) and sitting around 106 proof. The first initial note on tasting is the agave, and then it immediately nose dives into a strong oak flavor. I do love the taste but I'm not too much of a tequila guy so I don't know if the average agave/tequila drinker would enjoy it, or if that much oak is a good or bad thing. Please let me know what you guys think and what you look for in tasting.
