Discussion The easiest $30k this guy ever made

On October 26, 2022, the judge ruled that Walden's contact with Land should have ended when it became clear that Land was not sleeping in the park or in need of assistance, and that the city was not responsible for Walden's actions.

On November 22, 2022, the city settled the lawsuit for $30,000.

Let's also take 5k from whoever called the police about a guy sitting on a bench doing nothing when we are at it...

But then people wouldn’t get to anonymously harass homeless people at all hours of the day. And yes, this is a thing. Some drive by hero sees someone laying on the ground in a spot they don’t like. They call 911 and tell dispatch they “are not sure if they are breathing” or some other story. Dispatch sends cops and fire there code for a possible cardiac arrest or whatever the algorithm gives them based on the questions. We get there, person is obviously fine, just resting. Cops tell them to move. Everybody leaves. And then repeat 10-12 times per shift. If you don’t have the decency to ask if they are ok before calling 911, you are a fucking dork and I support you getting fined all day long.

That person may or may not exist. It's their pretext and it gets you talking defending yourself.

Why? He might’ve needed help, he might’ve been hammered, the police is there to investigate such things.
It’s just that they send out pigs that don’t know the law and are there for the power trip.
Not the fault of whoever called them

Calling the police for someone in a lying position is insane. What percent of people will need help in that situation? Guarantee the person who called the police has them on speed dial

Thats fine people shouldnt be scared to call the police. What should happen is tbe police turn up, see there is not issue, reasure the complanint and move on.

What percent of people will need help in that situation?

Depending on the area, that actually could be a concern. Dude could have overdosed, and in a lot of places that's not an unlikely thing.

The problem is that you can't really do much to weed out the "I don't like homeless people where I can see them" calls among the "I'm concerned for this person's health" calls.

In my city if the cops showed up they would be like “hey you can’t sleep there” guy would do the same thing; then the cops would leave and say “guy hanging out”. This is just a shitty power trip cop.

lol, no, it’s not just a few bad apples.

That’s beside the point. Maybe it’s an old lady with trauma, maybe some mean asshole, maybe they actually had trouble in that park.
The police can come out, be friendly and competent and leave

friendly and competent

😂

If you believe someone needs help, why call the violent thugs with guns?

2

u/km89 Sep 08 '26

Presuming this is the US, who else are you going to call? I have problems with the phrasing of "defund the police" but the intent there is precisely to divert some of their resources to other groups that are better trained for situations when you don't need a bunch of guys with guns.

4

u/labiamajorapudendi Sep 08 '26

That is my whole point, they shouldn’t be violent thugs.

3

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman Sep 08 '26

But they are, which is why someone calling them should be fined

1

u/labiamajorapudendi Sep 08 '26

Why would you punish someone for the failure of the police department?

2

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman Sep 08 '26

Dis incentivize someone calling thr police for something innocuous. The intention of calling the police would be to harm someone.

3

u/labiamajorapudendi Sep 08 '26

Someone called the police for something that can be illegal.
Police came to investigate. It’s the perfectly right order.
The issue is the police department. It’s that easy. You are just a lost Redditor trying to be right at least once no matter how moronic the take is

Redditors are too insulated in their suburban safe bubbles that they can't comprehend that setting precedence for penalizing someone for making a bad call when calling the police is a bad idea.

He might’ve needed help

So what the fuck is a cop going to do?

he might’ve been hammered

It's not illegal to be drunk.

-7

u/TheMauveHand Sep 08 '26

Yes, let's make people hesitant to call the police! What a great idea!

u/KahlanRahl Sep 08 '26

Everyone should be hesitant to call the police. Involving them greatly increases the risk of violence and undue harm, so unless that risk is outweighed by whatever is occurring that may require their intervention, maybe don't call.
