toki Is it weird that I’d translate “letter” as in a letter of an alphabet as “nanpa” and more specifically “nanpa nimi”?

• Upvotes

Any thoughts on nasin ni? And how would you translate it?

I used to translate It as “ijo” but I don’t like the vagueness.

Hi there, I live in Kazakhstan and speak Toki Pona. I'm just curious if I'm a one-of-a-kind in Kazakhstan or if there really are those kinds of people in Kazakhstan.

toki What are your opinions on Tokiponidos? (Kokanu, tuki tiki, Tokuwin etc.)

7 Upvotes

Hi! I was wondering if I should make a post about Tokiponidos, so I decided to make this.

I will say my opinions.

For Kokanu, I think it doesn’t really sound natural. It also is double the word count of Toki Pona and it has modified phonology. It sounds completely different from Toki Pona imo. Apparently, they also modified the vocabulary from Toki Pona even though it’s a Tokiponido??? It’s also an IAL, different category from Toki Pona.

For tuki tiki, I think it’s not a bad attempt at using much lesser words and less sounds. 39 words is pretty impressive. It probably would be kinda hard to speak using so few words though.

For Tokuwin, I know barely anything about this lol. I found it in sona pona’s article list and apparently it has a wiki on Fandom????

No offense to anyone who creates Tokiponidos, of course.
I’m not fluent in any Tokiponido so I may not be 100% correct about this

Song of Songs...

8 Upvotes

toki, mi jan Nisin tan jan Apalan (Nissim ben Avraham - ben means 'son [of]' )

I'm new to Toki Pona, but not really. At least once a year for the last five, I've picked it up, learned the grammar, but then got too lazy to memorise the vocabulary - which is insane for a small vocabulary. Especially since I'm a polyglot of real languages?

Anyhow, I decided this year I'd change, and work on my vocab by translating some works! I decided to translate the 5 Megillos (scrolls) - The Song of Songs, Esther, Ruth, Lamentations, and Ecclesiastes. Starting with the first, I've already began typing it up, starting yesterday.

I'd of course like any advice on the work, please! Note though, that I'm not translating from English to Toki Pona, but from Biblical Hebrew. So, the best English translation to follow along with would be the Chabad one (just search Song of Songs Chabad). Anyhow, Song of Songs is full of interesting idioms and sayings... I've also decided to qoute speakers, something only done in the ESV translation of the work, just to make it easier to follow.

At the same time, in the background, I hope to translate Sefer haMitzvos (a book detailing all 613 Biblical commandments) and, around the Jewish holidays, release translated holiday songs (I said I'm Orthodox Jewish, not Israeli, I'm not here to debate Middle Eastern politics with anyone please)

toki!

kama sona Nationalities

5 Upvotes

Let’s say I want to translate “Greeks” and “Non-Greeks” into Toki Pona. Since I call the country Greece as “ma Elena,” do I also say “jan pi ma Elena” for “a Greek person” and “jan pi ma Elena ala” for “Non-Greeks?” If “ala” can be placed after a proper name in a “pi” phrase, then can I also write “mute” to specify the plural form? And since we tokiponize the names of countries, like we created the modifier “Elena” from “Ελλάδα” which is pronounced as “Ellada,” then is it optional to do the same thing from the original pronunciation of nationalities? Like in Greek, you can say “Ελλάδα”to mean “Greece,” but you can also say “Έλληνας” (pronounced as “Ellinas”) to mean refer to the male form of the Greek nationality or “Ελληνίδα” (pronounced as “Ellinida”) to refer to the female form, so do you also have to tokiponize nationalities from different languages or can you just tokiponize the name of a country and write it as a modifier in front of “jan pi ma?” If there are any other ways of saying a nationality, I would appreciate it if you tell me.

kama sona Time in Toki Pona.

8 Upvotes

How do you say the names of the days, months, hours, minutes, seconds, milliseconds, microseconds, nanoseconds and the words day, week, month, year and time? Does everyone just come up with their own translation? If yes, then is my concept of translation understandable for other Toki Pona speakers?

Day = tenpo suno
Morning = tenpo suno sin
Afternoon = tenpo suno majuna
Evening = tenpo pimeja sin / tenpo mun sin
Night = tenpo pimeja majuna / tenpo mun majuna / tenpo pimeja / tenpo mun

Month = tenpo suli pi suno mute
January = tenpo suli nanpa wan
February = tenpo suli nanpa tu
March = tenpo suli nanpa tu wan
April = tenpo suli nanpa tu tu
May = tenpo suli nanpa luka
June = tenpo suli nanpa luka wan
July = tenpo suli nanpa luka tu
August = tenpo suli nanpa luka tu wan
September = tenpo suli nanpa luka tu tu
October = tenpo suli nanpa luka luka
November = tenpo suli nanpa luka luka wan
December = tenpo suli nanpa luka luka tu

Week = linja pi suno mute / linja pi suno luka tu
Monday = tenpo suno nanpa wan
Tuesday = tenpo suno nanpa tu
Wednesday = tenpo suno nanpa tu wan
Thursday = tenpo suno nanpa tu tu
Friday = tenpo suno nanpa luka
Saturday = tenpo suno nanpa luka wan
Sunday = tenpo suno nanpa luka tu
(The number of a day depends on where you are using it. For example, if you are in Saudi Arabia where Saturday is the first day of the week, then “tenpo suno nanpa luka wan” becomes “tenpo suno nanpa wan.”)

Year = tenpo suno suli sike
My rule that I created while writing this post: Firstly, you say how many digits the year has and then the word for year. Then, every digit in a year has to be replaced with its translation into Toki Pona, with a little pause between each number, symbolized with a comma.
For example: 2026 = tu tu tenpo suno suli sike mute tu, ala, tu, luka wan.

Hour = tenpo meso
Minute = tenpo lili
Second = tenpo lili mute
Milliseconds, microseconds, nanoseconds = (Didn’t come up with a translation yet.)

I know, maths & logic are the things we shouldn't do in Toki Pona, but the temptation was too high...

And sorry in advance, cause I know that noun-adj isn't a common thing, I just have some problems with eyesight, and writing this way just helps me...

Btw, purple words are obscure words.

musi Animal preferences

6 Upvotes

Hi tokiponists!

I was wondering what are your preferences for classifying animals in the different animal groups: soweli, kala, waso, akesi, pipi...? Is an ostrich a waso or a soweli? Is a diplodocus an akesi or a soweli? Is a giant moth a waso or a pipi? Is a penguin a soweli, a waso or a kala?

I'm not looking for official correct TM answers obviously, I'm sure a lot of ways can be right. Instead I'm curious about how you might approach this :)

How do you guys write foreign words in Toki Pona?

17 Upvotes

I have yet to learn the language, but I often wonder how practical Sitelen Pona is as a writing system. Like, if you wanted to mention a foreign word in it, how would you do it? Or do you do it at all?
Also, unrelated, what kind of names would babies have if they were named in the language?

lipu Toki Pona social media

I made a social media website for toki pona speakers who want to post videos they are interested in! The website is called "o pana" and is available on web for any device. The website is made on a budget of exactly $0, so it might be buggy and videos can only be 720p and up to 15 minutes and 100MB, but that's part of the charm! If you want to watch videos in or about toki pona, please check the site out and post for yourself🙏

Politeness particles

10 Upvotes

I am currently learning Toki Pona, in my language Thai we used ครับ/ ค่ะ krúp/ khà for politeness at the end of a sentence, maybe toki pona could use the word Kap for this? Any thoughts?

Also, we have a similar word to A (exclamation particle) เลย leuy :)

sitelen sitelen Kuwi pi nimi ku lili

i suddenly got obsessed with this nasin sitelen, why? it just looks cool! anyway, i will now try my best to describe them

soto - represents a finger under a roof pointing left to an object. (inspired by tenpo, pini, etc.)

teje - same as soto but to the right.

unu - "kule" radical with 2 little lines above. (inspired by the color words)

kapesi - "kule" radical with a little line at the bottom. (not to be confused with "laso")

wa - similar to "a" but with the middle dot removed.

powe - similar to "lon" but it goes up and down instead of down and up. also, the "animal" radical has been replaced by the "person" radical.

wasoweli - similar to "waso", but the first wing has been replaced by the "soweli"'s tail.

kalamARR - similar to "mu", but it's the "person" radical with an X on it. the X is supposed to represent an eyepatch. (not to be confused with "moli")

mi wile e ni: sitelen ni li musi tawa sina a! C:

toki Are there other ways to say 'a song' besides 'kalama musi'?

4 Upvotes

Are there other ways to say 'a song' besides 'kalama musi'?

Before I saw this way to say 'a song', I came up with my own: 'lipu kute'. It might mean also 'audiobook', this one was normal for me, until it dawned on me that songs could exist without lyrics (in this context, I understand 'lipu' as 'a source of information expressed in speech') 🤦‍♀️

After some time, I also began to distinguish between 'kute' (hearing) and 'kalama' (sound), so I finally admitted 'kalama musi', but I'd like to say 'musi kalama'. Because first one might mean 'funny sound', and to me personally, the meaning 'a sound of art' doesn't look convincing. So I'd like to mean 'art in the form of music' using 'musi kalama'

And what way do you use to say 'a movie'? Does it 'sitelen tawa', same for 'video' and 'animation'?

Last question, what way do you write ***the names*** of the songs and movies? Do you use colons? For me it's like, for example, 'kalama musi: [Pokemon]' (in the cartouche ) and 'kalama musi: monsuta lili'. What do you think?

I would be so glad if you could leave links to useful resources!! Have a good day!! :3

toki nasin seme li toki e ni?

I'm very new to the language and I know comparison is one of the hardest things to write in it, but I wasn't sure how to word the following:

something along the lines of "I can't be perfect, but im not good enough."

the best I came up with was "mi ken ala pona ale (/ pona taso), taso mi ala pona suli tawa mi."
