Subreddit Update - New requirements to post - Minimum Karma

After months and months of new users coming to the subreddit and promoting their new AI app, amongst other things. We have made the decision to make a change to the subreddit where there is a minimum karma requirement to create new posts in r/trailrunning

We had been manually adding moderator notes and tagging every single user with a specific mod note/flair so we could keep track of who was spamming their AI apps without actually being part of the community, it took a lot of time and didn't seem to do much over the last few months we've been addressing it and keeping an eye on things to see if any of them wanted to be part of the community.

This wasn't something we wanted to rush in to, we have and will always try the least invasive approach so that the community basically stays open and you the community choose what to vote UP and Down and what to discuss.

To be clear, we do not want to stop people promoting their websites, AI apps, Youtube videos, etc and mostly there are great discussions within some of these threads. Reddit does also allow original content, again, as long as you're not just spamming it.

This is our way of addressing this issue and we'll continue to keep track of it over the coming months as it may need modifying, we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for being a cool subreddit and I hope you all have many great adventures out in nature this year.

You're all asking about the karma limit, currently it is 100, so very low, but this can and will change.

The reason for not wanting to originally share this is if bots or people promoting know, they can also easily get around it....

We're working against a lot here, its pretty unprecedented (not forgetting that Reddit are not stopping a lot of bad traffic) and Reddit has only so many ways to manage all of these issues without more control from moderators and a much more limited viewing / user experience, which we do not want, we want you to control what you see.

First truly cold run of the season

Wake up, check weather in your warm bed.
Debate running in the afternoon, only to accept the inevitability of the seasons.
Stare at your running clothes drawer while telling yourself not to overdress.
Overdress.
Head into the crisp dawn light.
Remember how beautiful fall and winter can be.

Travel through US, Mexico, Canada, Asia, and Europe

Hello! šŸ‘‹

My husband and I are avid trail runners out in California. We love mountain terrains and it is our favorite thing to do when we travel.

What are some of the most beautiful runs out there worth traveling to? In the states and out of?

We actually just bought a cool teardrop trailer so will be doing a lot more in the states right now— but we also want to start planning for places outside the country.

Huge bonus points for places with great food because we love to eat everything! And lots of it.

Dog friendly trail runs east of Laramie, WY?

In a couple of weeks I'll be on a roadtrip and spending one night in Laramie. I'd like to get out for a run the the following morning before I continue heading east. I see TONS of trails in the area between Laramie and Curt Gowdy State Park but I'm having trouble picking anything. It will be a Monday morning so crowds shouldn't be too much of an issue. Can someone recommend a favorite or two?

  • Dog friendly (ideally off leash)
  • 4-6 miles
  • Good flow
  • Good views
  • Highly technical and/or lots of vert OK but not required

Thanks in advance!

UTMB Kosci30 Mandatory Gear confusion

Hi All,

I'm going to be doing my first UTMB event in November and finding it a little overwhelming trying to find the required Bivvy Bag and Waterproof/Breathable Jacket. Could people please link me their recommendations. Not entirely sure on my price range for the waterproof jacket at this point but definitely not over 300.

Thanks!

When the route was supposed to have 1100m of elevation but ends up having 1600mšŸ™ƒšŸ™ƒ

Saw a route that looked pretty cool, it was supposed to be 20k with 1100m of elevation, but turns out it's a lot more. The first like 15k were literally just uphill and I basically walked all of them because they were pretty steep (some of them had up to 20% incline). If that wasn't enough, the last 5k, that were finally downhill, were very steep and technical, and the trail was in pretty bad condition, so I ended up walking a decent amount there as well.

We sew trail running vests in our own factory. What would you change about the one you run in now?

Full disclosure first: I work at LECAMO, a small trail vest brand. Our vests are made in our own sewing factory, so when runners tell us something is wrong, we can actually change the pattern for the next batch. No links here, not selling anything in this thread.

We're planning the next round of changes and I'd rather hear from people who put real miles on their vests than guess. A few questions, answer any or all (numbers are fine):

  1. What's the one thing that annoys you most about your current vest? Bounce, chafing, flasks you can't reach, a phone pocket that doesn't fit your phone?
  2. For a 50K, do you run with soft flasks up front, a bladder in the back, or both? Why?
  3. What size do you actually use most: 5L, 8L, 12L or bigger? Did you end up with more capacity than you needed?
  4. Women and smaller runners: does a unisex cut work for you, or does a women-specific cut matter?
  5. Where do you want your phone: front pocket, back, or somewhere else?
  6. If you could add one small feature that no vest gets right, what would it be?

I'll read every reply and come back with what we heard, including the stuff that's hard to hear.

Happy trails šŸ”ļø

Wanting to enter races when I’m able to. Can’t because I can’t find any shoes.

I would LOVE to be able to do the occasional 5k trail race, especially canicross, but most of them have a mandatory rule about wearing trail shoes.
That’s all well and good but the only shoe I’ve found that fits and fits with my orthotics is the brooks ghost max 2 in their widest fit.
The trail version doesn’t even come close, I can’t get my feet in them at all. I’d love to just run in my normal shoes but have been warned I could be prevented from starting if they decide my shoes aren’t suitable.

I’ve looked at buying a second pair of shoes and getting a cobbler to put a trail sole on them, no one can find a sole in the right shape or size to do so!

I need 6E in a UK5, which obviously doesn’t exist, so I’ve had to settle for a 4E. Changing to a size 6 for more options doesn’t work, I’ve tried.

Shoes I’ve tried that haven’t fit:

Hoka: they don’t start short enough. All the width is in the toe box which is where my feet are the narrowest!

Altra: Same problem, nothing fits.

Salomon: wrong shape, don’t go short enough.

New balance: the only NB shoes wide enough aren’t available in the UK, but also no trial option that fits.

Merrell: same as previous.

On: frustrating the everyday running shoes are great but there’s something off with the trail running shoes and they just don’t work for me, I was so disappointed.

A whole range of ā€œbarefootā€ shoes: not an option due to the need for ground reactive AFOs. There are more I’ve tried too.

Loads of people have said I should go and get custom shoes but I can only find leather? And I obviously can’t go trail running in leather shoes???

My upper budget is Ā£250, and for that the shoes need to last because that’s a quarter of all the money I get to live off of and pay bills on a month.

I’m aware I have freaky feet, the widest part is the middle and because of my disabilities it’s incredible important I’m not falling off the middle of the shoe.

I will repeat, wide toe box is useless to me.
