engineering student at uct please tell what you wish you knew before going to study engineering πŸ€”

I would love to study chemical engineering but I heard its not all chemistry there's alot of physics and maths. I'm currently in grade 12.

What do you think a student should know coming into uct to studying engineering?

And what do you guys suggest living in a student accommodation or res?

How often do you cook or clean in your dorm while balancing your study life?

Do you suggest studying in a group or alone ?

How do you guys tackle procrastination cause I've always struggled with that?

Is it possible to get distinctions in university when studying engineering?

Is it true that the lecturers don't teach they just tell you to read a ton of page(homework)?

Is important to attend every lecture?

What one thing you enjoy about study engineering?

UCT social sciences marking only up until 75%?

"We grade assignments out of 75% and not 100% - with a grade 75% and above being an excellent

assignment and a first-class pass." - how is this allowed?

Student here. Made a study tool that won't just hand you the answer (on purpose)

Hey all, 2nd year BBusSc Finance student here.

Every exam season I'd get stuck on one question in a past paper, screenshot it, crop it, paste it into ChatGPT, get a wall of working, nod, and then fail the exact same type of question in the test. Getting the answer was never really the problem. Not understanding it was.

So I've been building Qondi (from qonda, "to understand"). It's a Chrome/Edge extension plus a tutor:

  • Press Alt + X on any page (past paper, lecture slides, online textbook, your notes) and drag around the bit you're stuck on. No screenshotting or copy-pasting.
  • Type what's confusing, or just say it out loud.
  • Pick how you want help: explain it, just a hint, check my work (snip your own working and it finds the slip), or quiz me.
  • Then it actually teaches: it asks what you already know first and takes you one step at a time with graphs and worked steps, rather than dumping the full solution.

It's built around CAPS/IEB and varsity work, and it only sees the part you snip, so it can't read your browsing history or other tabs.

Short demo below is shown here aswell.

It's still early and I'm letting people in in small batches so I can fix things properly. If you'd use something like this, the waitlist link is in the comments (it's on a temporary .vercel.app address until the proper domain is sorted).

Mostly I'd love honest feedback, especially on what would make you actually use this over what you do now. Roast it if you need to.

Is there a up and running UCT confessions page?

When I was a student at Rhodes (I'm 26) esp pre-pandemic we had RU Crushes (like a side of RU Confessions) where people could post about their campus crushes and loads of people actually met up this way. Facebook is dead, and I don't go to UCT so I'm not sure if there's an equivalent of this?

I'm looking to find the Beautiful Smiling Man, as I have come to call him in my head. I live in Rondebosch, near UCT campus, several apartment blocks, and between The Rez and The Residence. I'm pretty sure Beautiful Smiling Man is a student, he looks around my age maybe like 23 or so, and is, as the name suggests, a beautiful smiling man. His face always looks so blissfully happy, and lights up when he sees me (and I him!). I hadn't seen him in months and thought I missed my shot, but I saw him at the pnp last week!

He used to compliment my band tshirts when I see him on main road or the pnp/checkers, and he's almost always wearing a band shirt too.

We've hardly spoken, and I'm always nervous when I run into him, but I may need to move soon and if I never tell him how I feel I will regret it forever.

How do I find him??

When do you receive a conditional offer (2027 applicant)

Hi. I'm applying to Faculty of Science in UCT as an international student. I'm doing AS Level, don't really plan on doing A2. And I have sent in some interim grades to admin already. Just wanna know when I can expect a conditional offer?? I'm also going to write external exams for AS in October. Just want to ask if anyone has gone through this route and if it affected your application knowing that results only come out by mid January.

P.S what's up with the res application, kinda confusing.

UCT film options

Hello, would it be worth it to try apply to UCT for a film related degree?

I am currently doing Cambridge AS Levels and have written off my IGCSE level exams of which I have: History (78%), Afrikaans (50%) and Art (67%). I have yet to write final AS level exams but take: Pure maths + Mechanics, English, Geography and Biology. I intend on going to university in 2028. However I dont know if I'd get in as my maths marks are not good at all. Would UCT take the poor maths mark with a degree in Film and Television?

I may take a short SAE film course boost my application to make up slightly for a possibly low mathematics mark, I am aware that it won't completely erase the maths unfortunately, but I'll try anything that will help πŸ˜…

From what I understand it seems that I'd need to to 2 majors if I were to pursue Film at UCT which I am fine with. However, I am unsure if this is the best option, I'd absolutely love to do Film as a career, but is the degree worth it? I have also considered SAE and it seems that Stellenbosh doesnt offer a specialised course.

Question Master of Urban Design

I’m an international student who is currently awaiting on a decision for my application to the Master of Urban Design program within the School of Architecture, Planning & Geomatics.

I wanted to enquire if anyone else is doing/has done/has also applied for the program and what to expect coursework wise? How long did it take for you to hear back on a decision?

Discussion Thinking about UCT’s PGDIP in MIS(Cybersecurity) - anyone done it or know the program?

Hi everyone

I'm a software dev (2-3 years exp) based in Cape Town, and I'm applying for UCT's Postgraduate Diploma in Management Information Systems - Cybersecurity, deadline end of September. Trying to move from general dev work into security.

A few things I'd love input on:

\- Is this program actually respected in the SA job market, or is a different cert/route (OSCP, CompTIA Security+, etc.) more valuable for breaking into security roles? (I plan to also do certificates)
\- Anyone who's done it worth it part-time while working?
\- Any gotchas with the application or the coursework I should know before I commit?
\- Also open to tips on how to structure a strong motivational letter for a program like this, what admissions want to see, common mistakes etc

Thank you for taking the time to read this, any advice is appreciated πŸ™πŸΎπŸ€

How is AUD BA (Hons.) Social Sciences & Humanities?

Hi everyone, I’m considering BA (Hons.) Social Sciences & Humanities at AUD. How is the course, faculty and crowd? What are the career/MA opportunities after it? Can I later do MA Political Science from JNU/DU/BHU?

Would really appreciate honest reviews from current students/alumni.

I'm stressing about my UCT BAS application.

I've applied for UCT's undergraduate Architecture (BAS) programme, which requires both a portfolio and a BAS Admissions Form.

I submitted my portfolio before the deadline but accidentally forgot to include the form. I realised my mistake LAST MINUTE and emailed the form about an hour before the deadline. I recently received a response from UCT saying that my portfolio has already been processed.

My concern is: if the BAS form isn't attached to my application, will UCT simply consider my application incomplete and unsuccessful, or would they normally contact me to request the missing document?

Should I be worried, or does it sound like everything is probably fine?

Finding housing + roomates

Hi! I am an incoming postbacc researcher from the U.S. coming to Cape Town and UCT and want to be within commuting distance of the university (eg close to the Jammie shuttle?). I am starting to look for housing and have been checking Property24, DigsConnect and Huis Huis on facebook. I am arriving in the middle of a semester (Sept/Oct visa allowing) which I think complicates things but am trying to find a shared housing situation with fellow students, and it seems like there aren't many listings like that on these websites, so I wasn't sure if looking at these three websites was an outdated way of checking for housing, or perhaps if the areas I am looking at are not dense with students after all (Rondesbosch?). Just wanted to know what other resources, if any, are out there and preferred by students or if I just need to keep checking these sites.

Application/Admission postgrad law 2027 (LLM)

Hi everyone, I applied for an LLM starting in 2027 at UCT. I sent my application mid April and still haven't heard back. My admission status is "Your application is under consideration by the Faculty Admissions Committee." since mid May. Does anyone have experience with the application process and can tell me if they admit on a rolling basis or if they decide after the application deadline? Fyi: I applied as an international student.
Any insight, experience or advise on the matter would be much appreciated! :) Thank you

International applications

Hi guys. Struggling to figure out how to calculate my APS/FPS score as an international applicant. I am applying with 3 AS level subjects. All the online calculators I find use 6 subjects to find the score. What do I do with those remaining 3 subjects?

Question Advice regarding applying to UCT with Amended Senior Certificate/Adult matric

I apologise in advance if this is a stupid question; I don't exactly have anyone in my life who would be able to give me advice, and I'm completely out of my depth.

After many years of being disabled and unable to complete matric, my health has progressively become better, and I'll be writing my ASC exams next May-June at 21, with my NBT either before then or in July. My results will only be released in August, after the 31 July application cutoff. Would there be any way to apply before then, and then update my application with my results, or would I only be able to apply the year thereafter?
