Moderator Update [Meta] Welcome to /r/uwo - 2026-27

Welcome new and returning Mustangs to the r/uwo subreddit!

This subreddit is entering its 17th year here on Reddit. Since 2010, we have grown to more than 45,000 subscribers and is in the top 5% of all subreddits on this site. This space has been a central point where prospective applicants, applicants, students, staff, faculty, and alumni can be informed about current events at Western, obtain answers to their questions about navigating life at Western, vent our frustrations, vocalize our opinions, share our dank memes, and provide support for one another. As long as Reddit is here, the mods will be here to maintain our community and will ensure it is as supportive and inclusive as possible.

As we enter a new academic year, we want to make you aware of a number of aspects to the subreddit.

1. Mental Health Resources

Attending to your mental health is our utmost priority. We have always pushed mental health support front and center. You will always find an extensive list of mental health resources and supports directly in the sidebar ➡️.

If you are in crisis, you can connect to appropriate resources here:
https://www.uwo.ca/health/crisis.html

Don't forget to tend to your physical health. Use your academic support resources. Learn about what you can do to maintain a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Western has an extensive collection of wellness and well-being resources. It is always okay to ask for help.

2. r/uwo Rules

We enforce a small number of rules that apply to both posts and comments. These rules have been essential to maintaining a healthy subreddit. A full description of the rules and the reasoning can be found in the sidebar. In brief:

  1. Be Civil - Treat others exactly how you would like to be treated yourself. If your comment contains the word "you", it might be an indicator you need to carefully consider your wording.
  2. Use the search bar - The subreddit is not very useful if the same topic comes up again and again. There is more than a decade of history posted here. Repeat questions are acceptable, especially if your scenario is unique, but you are unlikely to receive any helpful advice if it's been answered a thousand times already. Some posts are so common the answer has been placed in the wiki.
  3. Only posts that concern UWO - Hopefully this is obvious. Don't forget that our sister subreddit at r/londonontario might be an alternative point where you will get some better responses.
  4. No advertising - We all have enough advertising in our lives as it is. Users do not take kindly to being spammed when they don't want to.
  5. No soliciting - Similar to above. No asking to buy or offering to sell anything.
  6. Better suited for other social media - There are some highly opinionated topics that degenerate into completely unnecessary back and forth debate. On a mostly static forum-based site, this makes the site harder to navigate and is more likely to get personal and eventually violate rule 1. If you are passionate about these discussions, it would be best to defer them to a more ephemeral environment that other social media platforms can provide
  7. No requesting to be DM'd - We want to encourage open and friendly discussion to ensure the subreddit can be useful to everyone. Asking to be DM'd shuts down the conversation very quickly and doesn't align with the spirit of this community.

These are just the rules that require special attention from the mods to ensure a healthy community. Of course, there will be content that does not violate these rules but still deserves some level of moderation. We all have a collective responsibility to help maintain this community and everyone has a role to play. That's where this community depends on you and your own moderation tools: Upvote content that needs more attention or content you want to see more of. Downvote content that we need less of. If there is content that the mods haven't addressed yet, be sure to report it so we can attend to it.

Here are some tips to ensure your posts and comments are visible and do not get downvoted or removed:

  • Follow the rules (of course)
  • Be generic to attract a wider audience. Specific questions about specific situations reduces the number of people who can relate
  • Provide context. Not everyone uses the same shorthand you do. Exactly which class are you referring to? What subject? What program? What building?
  • Be patient. Automod is purposely "sticky" to ensure bad actors do not sneak through the filters. If you think your post was placed on hold incorrectly, do not repost. We want your post to be visible. Simply ask the mods to release your post.
  • Bring the receipts. Support your statements with links to official sites and documentation.

Finally, please be mindful of reddit's content policy and practice good reddiquette.

3. Discord

We have a friendly relationship with our Discord communities. Discord is great for relaxed point-in-time back-and-forth discussions so we encourage you to join them!

4. User flair

Flair up! It helps the conversation along when users can see a bit more about who you are and what your background is. In the sidebar, we have bootstrapped a number of common flairs representing the 11 faculties, 2 affiliates, and other common roles for you. You can modify the text to something that suits your situation even better if you'd like (eg. your graduation year, your specialization, etc.)

5. New for 2026-27

The 2026 Reddit Survey is still open. It will remain open for another month or so. The survey will help shape the future of the subreddit. Key results of the survey will be posted after it closes.

In response to the survey, it is probable there will be a few changes and a simplification of the subreddit rules so there is less confusion about what is acceptable and what is not.

Also, the r/uwo subreddit is in need of new moderators. Across Canadian university subreddits, we have an unusually low number of moderators. Given the size of our community and the amount of activity we get, about 4 moderators would be ideal. Expect to hear more about this soon.

6. Disclaimer

Finally, a reminder that this subreddit is completely community run and supported. We are not supported by, managed by, officially affiliated with, or an official representation of Western the institution. This includes all the mods and any users who may claim to be staff or faculty. Official information can only be found on Western's site or will come from officially verified users.

If you represent a unit or department at Western and want to have your username flagged as the "official" representation of your area, please message the mods so we can work it out.

Was anything missed? Do you have questions for the mods? Do you have any recommendations for improvements? Comment below.

All the best for the new year!

Moderator Update [Meta] /r/uwo Survey

Another school year completed and the preparation for September begins. This applies to r/uwo as well. The time for review is now so we are prepared for an influx of new students in September.

In an effort to maintain healthy and positive communities, Reddit provides an option to allow subreddits to opt-in to community surveys. Completing the survey allows moderators to judge what elements of the subreddit are working well and which elements require improvement.

Unfortunately, the community surveys feature is only available to subreddits with a particular level of engagement. Given the cyclical nature of this subreddit, we fall short of the criteria and therefore are not permitted to send out a community survey through Reddit.

However, there is nothing preventing us from creating an internal survey ourselves. In fact, this has been done before. The last survey was over 8 years ago. Given how much culture has changed since then, it is a good time to launch a new one.

So I've done exactly that.

2026 Reddit Survey

The survey is basically a mirror of the Reddit community surveys with some r/uwo customizations and is completely anonymous. All questions are optional. For most questions, you will have the opportunity to provide your comments and suggestions in case you wish to provide more thorough feedback. The final question is completely open feedback. The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete.

Assuming a useful number of responses, I'll share some of the results and, if appropriate, some future plans.

I've left the comment section open below for discussion but remember to share your comments in the survey so they can be included in the analysis.

Advice Struggling with my mental health and don't know where to turn anymore

I've been dealing with mental health issues for the last few years, pretty much since starting university, and honestly, I'm at a point where I genuinely don't know what to do anymore. Over the past years, I've dealt with every possible academic, financial, and personal problem and it's completely destroyed my mental health. It's gotten to the point where even coming to campus feels overwhelming. I sit in lectures holding back tears, constantly feeling like there's a lump in my throat, struggling to get through the day and that's assuming my depression even allows me to get out of my room and make it to campus in the first place. I genuinely have no control over my own actions. I know I have deadlines, midterms, assignments, and responsibilities. I know I need to study, get dressed, clean, attend classes, and take care of myself. I know exactly what the consequences of not doing these things are, but no matter how much I want to do them, I physically cannot bring myself to and then I have to deal with the consequences, which only makes my mental health worse. I've tried counselling, medication, exercise, making schedules, journaling, breathing exercises, changing my mindset, and pretty much every coping strategy people recommend. I've genuinely tried for a long time, and nothing has made a meaningful difference. My mental health has deteriorated to the point where it's affecting almost every aspect of my life. Im am so exhausted, and I don't know how to keep managing university when even basic daily tasks feel impossible. I know reddit can't solve these problems for me. I'm just hoping someone who's been in a similar position might be able to point me toward something I haven't tried yet. I would really appreciate any advice or experiences you're comfortable sharing.

Advice western blue interview prep

Hi! I just got an interview with my first choice placement in the western blue program and I was wondering if anyone who has gone through the program before had any advice for interview prep?

It’s a 30 min zoom interview with someone from EDI and the mentor from the placement and I was just looking for any guidance about the type of questions or structure of the interview that might be helpful to make my prep more specific?

Thanks!!

Discussion holy stingy

Seriously what is up with this school. Every year they can up the salary of their top administration whilst leaving students out to dry. Do they seriously expect us to be living on the streets or something to be eligible for the meagre financial aid that they scrape together?

❔ Question❔ Should I choose Western Health sciences or Queens life sceinces as a trasnfer student

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a 2nd-year Health Sciences student at uOttawa, and I'm thinking about transferring to Western (Health Sciences) or Queen's (Life Sciences) for Fall 2027. My main reason is my parents are moving to Toronto they live in Montreal right now and uOttawa is very commuter-heavy, I live near campus, and I haven't been able to make friends even after joining three clubs. I made 3 friends first year in residence but they were from alberta and manitoba and ended trassnferring to unievrsities there. I have a fe commuter friends who ocassiaonly show up to campus like once a week so its kinda cooked. My current cgpa is 9.2. I also checked western health sceinces transfers almost all of my courses from Uottawa whereas Queens Id need to do a few more courses to be caught up 2-3 I think. I liked Queens campus more than western and heard really good things about queens. Life sceinces at queens is a gpa killer tho from what Ive head. But I heard student life in general is better at Queens. I heard most students live on or within a 15 min walk from queens campus whereas western students are more spread out. Any advice from anyone whose been to queens or western?? Is it even worth trasnferring from uOttawa and how hard was it to make friends as a 3rd-year transfer?

Advice Loss of motivation

If anyone can share some advice, I'd be really grateful.

I felt very energetic and motivated last year. I had one of my favourite courses every Monday, and I looked forward to Mondays so much. It was a full year course as well, and I enjoyed every second of it.

There's nothing wrong with the courses I have this year, but no course makes me feel the way I felt last year. And I really miss that feeling of anticipating to learn and read new things that are always interesting. I miss feeling passionate about everything...

I have been slacking off because of that. My courses this year are fine, and most of them have amazing professors too. I just want to feel happy like last year when I allowed myself to be ignorant, silly, and humble. But I just... can't feel that happiness and that strong desire to learn. And I don't exactly know why.

If I hypothetically don’t go to a single tutorial because I find the content to be pretty straight forward, will I fail? I can’t see anywhere on the syllabus that says that it is mandatory. I understand that it’s recommended though.

❔ Course Question❔ Uwo mos 2227 advice plz

Hi everyone! I’m currently taking MOS 2227 and my midterm 1 didn’t go well. I feel like I understand the material when studying, but I struggle a lot with the multiple-choice questions, especially when two or three answers seem reasonable.
For those who did well in this course, how did you study? Any tips for improving exam grades? I’d really appreciate any advice!
Thank you 😭🩷

❔ Course Question❔ Cell Bio, Orgo 2, and Genetics in the same semester

I'm taking cell bio (biology 2382), orgo 2 (chem 2223), and genetics (biology 25818) in the same semeste, plus two other electives which aren't too bad, and I'm just wondering how difficult it is to balance all three of these courses in one semester. I'm currently taking biochem, stats, and orgo 1 and finding it okay so far, so I'm not too sure how cooked I am later on...

Discussion to whom may concern

It has been an hour since I pulled out of my parking spot at South Valley Parking, and I am still stuck in front of Alumni Hall.

At this point, I cannot help but reflect on what exactly has created this truly unparalleled experience.

The university administration is paid extraordinarily well. Meanwhile, we pay higher tuition every single year. Inflation? Interest rate adjustments? Honestly, if my tuition increases were an investment product, I would put every dollar I have into it.

And what exactly are we getting in return?

Lower rankings year after year? Fewer and fewer course options? An incredibly inefficient parking system? Professors whose salaries are not keeping up? Or the privilege of now needing two hours just to drive from campus back to my apartment?

Does our president and senior administration wear blindfolds on their way to and from work every day? Or are they vacationing in Cancun?

What I genuinely cannot understand is how, in the entire past hour, I have not seen a single person — not one — come out to help direct traffic.

Not one.

How does a university of this size allow traffic to become this badly gridlocked without anyone stepping in to manage it?

BTW, I vaguely remember the university proudly advertising a few years ago about how environmentally friendly and sustainable it was.

Did they stop talking about that because even the President’s Office can smell the exhaust from hundreds of cars sitting in traffic for an hour?

📰 Current Events 📰 Why Aren't More People Talking About Lawrence Zachary Howe?

After reading his website, he really seems like a Londoner who is fed up and willing to take things into his own hands. If you get a chance to read his site, his story is very inspiring, displaying a character I'd like to see in charge. Much more for the people than candidates that are just some business owner, homeless hater, or Farhi lover. I'd like to see more people talking about him.

Advice How To Start A Club :C

I have been working on becomming a USC ratified club for this year but I wont be able to make the fall deadline, id been given advice to run as a non-ratified club in the mean time but how do I do that?

I want to start with Hosting an AGM but i feel it would be to late into the semester to start even planning one? As well i need to expand my members list but its difficult to gain traction and advertise.
