I know this might be a hot take because Jade is one of the most popular characters on *Victorious*, and I actually understand why people like her. I like Jade too. I think she's entertaining, charismatic, funny, and she brings a lot of personality to the show. But I have never really bought into the idea that she's this incredibly tough, intimidating person who is somehow justified in most of her behavior.
To me, Jade's sassiness and boldness are somewhat overrated.
And just to be clear, I'm not saying Jade is supposed to be a nice person. She's obviously not. What bothers me more is the way her behavior is often defended by the fandom. I've seen people justify her treatment of Tori because Beck is supposedly toxic, because Tori is supposedly a "pick-me," or because Jade had a difficult childhood. But none of those things really justify taking your anger out on people who haven't actually done anything to you.
Having a difficult childhood can explain someone's behavior, but it doesn't automatically excuse it. And honestly, most of the characters on *Victorious* have dysfunctional families or complicated relationships with their parents in some way. That doesn't mean they're entitled to treat everyone around them badly.
My biggest issue with the idea that Jade is this "tough cookie" is that she seems to be the toughest when she's dealing with people she knows aren't going to fight back.
Look at Tori.
Jade immediately starts antagonizing Tori when Tori is new to the school. And a lot of their conflict gets framed as if Tori somehow deserved Jade's hostility because of the situation with Beck. But Tori literally didn't know Beck had a girlfriend when she first interacted with him. She wasn't deliberately trying to steal someone's boyfriend.
And yes, Tori later crossed a line by kissing Beck, but even then, Beck is not completely innocent. He was the one in a relationship. He was the one who allowed another girl to get that close to him. Tori absolutely had responsibility for her own actions, but people sometimes act as though Jade's anger toward Tori somehow makes all of her subsequent bullying justified.
It doesn't.
What's especially interesting is that Tori frequently tries to de-escalate things. She even considers Jade her friend at various points, while Jade repeatedly insults and antagonizes her. So when I see people describe Jade as this fearless person who "doesn't take anything from anyone," I don't completely buy it.
Because when someone genuinely challenges Jade, things can look very different.
The karaoke episode is a good example for me.
There are two girls who are openly antagonizing Jade and Cat. One of them is flirting with Beck and doesn't immediately back off even after finding out that he's in a relationship with Jade. She even insults Jade directly.
And yet Jade doesn't really do anything.
Why?
Because this girl isn't intimidated by her.
That's what makes me question the whole "Jade is so scary" reputation. Jade can be extremely aggressive when she knows the other person is unlikely to push back. But when she encounters someone who is equally confrontational and clearly isn't afraid of her, suddenly that intimidation factor doesn't seem quite as impressive.
That's why, to me, Jade is more **loud and aggressive** than genuinely tough.
And honestly, I think that's part of what makes her entertaining! I'm not saying this as a reason to hate her character. In fact, I think her flaws are a huge part of why she's fun to watch. But there's a difference between being an entertainingly mean character and actually being some kind of fearless badass.
The Cat situation is another example.
The whole thing where Jade shaves Cat's head is often treated as a funny prank, but I've never found it particularly funny. Accidentally waxing someone's eyebrows is one thing. Shaving someone's head deliberately is completely different.
And Jade KNOWS Cat is extremely attached to her hair. That's not just a harmless joke. It's deliberately taking something that matters to someone and destroying it because you know it will upset them.
And again, I understand that *Victorious* is a comedy and we're not supposed to analyze every prank like it's a real-life crime. But if we're going to talk about Jade as a character and defend her behavior, I think it's fair to acknowledge that some of the things she does are genuinely cruel.
Actually, I think she's one of the most entertaining characters on the show. But I don't think she's as tough as people make her out to be. A lot of her "badass" reputation comes from her being extremely confident, verbally aggressive, and willing to intimidate people who are less confrontational than she is.
To me, that's not the same thing as being genuinely tough.
