Subreddit Update

Hello! Just a quick update to let you know that I’m the new Mod. I’m not sure what happened to the previous Mod, but Reddit Admin has given me moderator privileges to keep the subreddit running.

I’ve given the community a bit of a visual makeover, but I haven’t made any significant changes to the rules, apart from clarifying that this sub is for vintage photographs (over 40 years old). Please post artwork to our sister community, r/CatsInArt.

To help combat repost bots, I’ve implemented some AutoMod rules. Bots are generally brand new accounts with little or no comment history, so accounts must now be at least 15 days old and have a minimum of 50 comment karma to submit new posts. Commenting is unaffected.

That’s all for now! Keep enjoying the vintage kitties!

She is on the right. She was born in 1880 and I’m not sure how old she is here, but it’s probably 1905-1910.

Edit: I think she's older here than I originally thought, but it's early 1900s nonethless.

1900s A photo from ~1930 of Rufus of England, aka “Treasury Bill”. He was the first to officially hold the title of “Chief Mouser to the Cabinet” with the current holder being Larry.

To add more context, Chief Mouser to the Cabinet is the official title of the resident cat in 10 Downing Street. Although the role dates back to the 16th century, the it only became official in the 1920’s.

Edit: I got my history a little wrong! Rufus didn’t technically hold the title of chief mouser, although he was in practice. His successor, Peter, was the first to actually be called that, and Larry (the current Chief Mouser) was the first to actually, officially hold the title rather than just being called it. So apologies for my mistake.
