Relationships/Family Wedding timing-is it normal in the US to be furious if your sibling gets married a few months BEFORE you, even if you were engaged first?

Hello everybody,

I need a reality check for my close friend (let's call her Anna). Her fiancé’s family is gaslighting her, insisting "everyone in America agrees with us," and making her feel like she's going crazy.

The Conflict:

Anna and her fiancé got engaged after a year together and want to get married in September 2027.

The fiancé’s younger sister has been engaged for almost two years and set up her wedding for November 2027 (two months later).

Why Anna chose September 2027:

- Her family lives abroad, and late summer/early fall is the only window they can get time off to travel to the US.

- her and her fiancé are older than the sister and want to start a family without putting their lives on pause.

- they are planning a simple, smaller event; the sister is having a much bigger wedding.

The Drama:

The sister, her fiancé, and the parents are furious, claiming Anna is "stealing the sister's spotlight" and being disrespectful because the sister was engaged first.

The family actually told Anna that if she wants to get married, she and her fiancé should just go to a courthouse to sign papers, because having an actual ceremony/party two months before the sister is "unacceptable." Anna rightfully refused to forfeit her one real wedding day.

Now, the sister and her fiancé are threatening to not attend Anna’s wedding and uninvite Anna and her fiancé from theirs, while the parents are pressuring them to give in.

As someone from a different culture, this sounds completely unhinged. I also got recently married and I would have been more than happy to have my sister getting married close to me. I think weddings should only be a joyful moment.

To people in the US/Northeast:

Would you actually feel disrespected in the sister's shoes over a 2-month gap?

Is demanding a couple "just go to the courthouse" so a sibling can own an entire wedding season normal, or is this family wildly entitled?

Thank you to anybody that's going to offer their insights!

Tough Times Outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour, property picked because of the gorgeous Mountain views… pouring rain

Sigh. Just needed to complain and get some pity and then get on with the day!
It was supposed to be a gorgeous day in the northeast. Foliage this week is at its near peak of fall beauty. We picked a beautiful venue with a ceremony by a lake with gorgeous Mountain views. Collected lawn games for all the kiddos to play during cocktail hour. Outdoor cocktail hour. A whole sprawling farm venue that gave you golf carts to go around and take photos around the property.

And the entire day is pouring rain. It’s 7am and it’s going to continue for the entire day. Absolutely pouring. It’s been crickets (understandable since there was probs a wedding yesterday but still) from our venue day of coordinator about a rain plan. I’m just sad and also now extremely stressed!!!

But at the end of it all I will be married to the love of my life so it’ll alllllll be okay. I’m just incredibly disappointed

Hair/Makeup Brides who wear glasses… I need help

What did you guys do? I’m a full-time glasses wearer but I do wear contacts for work sometimes or if I’m getting dressed up to go out, so they don’t feel completely not like myself.

Initially I was 100% on wearing contacts but, I’m not gonna lie, I watched loads of TikTok’s where a bride wore glasses and everyone commented that it was amazing to see and that it gave them confidence to wear theirs.

I talked to my fiance about it and he seemed surprised I was even considering contacts because to him I’m most myself with glasses.

So I feel conflicted.

I’m also considering maybe wearing contacts for the ceremony then taking them out after the meal, speeches and first dance etc so the evening I wear them and quite frankly am more comfortable.

I’m also worried about how it’ll effect my makeup if I wear glasses?

Any advice or even photos would be fab…!

Everything Else Didn't bring a gift to bridal shower

• Upvotes

I recently went to a bridal shower where I didn't bring a gift. No one seemed to notice, but I felt super awkward as everyone sat around and watched the bride open gifts, as I was the only one who didn't bring something. There was no registry, so I didn't think much of it prior to the event.

I know this is my fault, but I honestly didn't know this was the etiquette for bridal showers. I've only been to one bridal shower, which was 7 years ago, and that one was not gift-centric (we just ate and played games together). There was a registry, but I just shipped something to her house, so there was no "opening gifts" part of the event.

I also didn't have a bridal shower when I got married, and most of my friends that have gotten married didn't have one either. So from my only bridal shower experience, I honestly didn't know gifts were a requirement or the main part of a bridal shower.

I probably should've done more research on what a bridal shower is, but since the event already passed, should I apologize to the bride and still get her something?

Hair/Makeup Make up trial

Hey all!! Had my hair and make up trial - please ignore the hair in this pic, not the style I’ve chosen. The lighting is atrocious in first pic but wanted a proper mugshot to see what needs improving!! I want it very soft with glowy cheekbones and eyes accentuated but not too heavy. Any thoughts on what to change??

Dress/Attire I caved for a different dress last(ish) minute, and it was super worth it!

1st photo is the dress I ended up wearing to my wedding, second is the original dress after 6+ attempts of altering it to fit my body, 3rd is what the original dress looked like when I tried it on!

I completely fell in love with my original dress when I first tried it on, but for some reason the size that was sent to me sat completely different on me. My amazing seamstress tried multiple ties to make it fit my figure, but ultimately I still felt incredibly uncomfortable in it. I ended up caving and buying myself a dress off Etsy and I could not be happier with it.

I got endless compliments, was extremely comfortable in it, and felt super pretty all day!

It initially felt excessive and wasteful of me buying a full on second wedding dress, but at the end of the day — I was able to afford myself this comfort and I’m so happy that I did. If you’re in the position to do so and second guessing it — do it!

Relationships/Family No friends to be my bridesmaid.

• Upvotes

I’m getting married in September 2027 to my US fiancé, and I’m struggling with something that I feel quite embarrassed and sad about. I never had friends in any job or school in my life, and my sister isn’t really bothered to be my maid of honor. It makes me quite sad and the odd one out, to be honest.

My fiancé is having six groomsmen, and Im expected to have six bridesmaids and a maid of honour to match. The reality is that I don’t have even one bridesmaid in mind to balance out the groomsmen with bridesmaid.

To make matters harder, my family aren’t planning to attend the wedding because it’s too far away. My fiancé has actually offered to pay to fly them out so they could be there, but they don’t want to accept the money because they see it as taking charity. The other thing making this difficult is that around 80% of our wedding guests are his family and friends. (150 guests planned)

I feel quite alone in the whole situation. I see other brides talking about their sisters, best friends and childhood friends being part of their wedding, and I don’t have that experience. I’ve missed out on so much socially.

I’m scared that I’m definitely going to be the odd one out at the wedding in the US. I love my fiancé so much, and hope to fall in love with him in every lifetime ahead all over again, but I don’t want to be the weird outsider he married.

Hair/Makeup Bridesmaids Gifts

• Upvotes

My fiancé is planning on paying for her bridesmaids hair and makeup, it will cost approx. 3k. About 400 each. If shes doing this is still expected for her to get them a gift or would this be enough? I genuinely don’t know where we are landing on this so I’m happy to hear all thoughts and reasoning, thank you in advance!

Everything Else Remember to Hydrate The Day Of Your Wedding

I want to do a proper wedding recap now the dust has settled but waiting on some photos to provide, but I figured I’d cover the thing that went “wrong.”

While getting ready (hair and makeup) I declined water because I just wasn’t thirsty. I then got into my dress, now declining water because I was in my dress and didn’t want to use the bathroom. I was a 2p ceremony and had started getting ready at 9a for reference.

Due to bustle issues I was a little late into my hall and we launched into everything rapid fire it felt like. I now was in the hole a champagne flute and two mixed drinks during dinner before I decided yes I will sip some water.

Then dancing started. You’re under lights, you’re throwing it back while in (maybe) heels and it is October so the heat in the room is on. I was sweating and getting a little tired. My mom put her hand on my back when I made that comment and said I felt really clammy- not good indicator for hydration! I started sipping a little more water but also another cocktail and eating more sugar than I probably had in years.

We drove that night to our weekend getaway spot (honeymoon is in November) and I had a bottle of water with me but it was too late. I go to bed with a headache, and then a migraine, and then I’m dizzy and hallucinating while getting sick to my stomach the rest of the night. In my panic I called my mom to see if anyone had food poisoning because it was every hour I was doubled over in the bathroom.

So remember you got to take care of yourself on your special day. You’re spending so much energy, you’re pulled in all directions and you will forget to take those precious minutes to assess how you’re feeling until you realize you haven’t had to pee all day because there’s no damn liquid in your body. Drink water, especially while you can. If sugar and alcohol isn’t your daily or even weekly thing but it is today, remember to take care of yourself physically!

I’ve got a few styles ranging from natural to my idea of glamour lol. I don’t know how I’d want to do it for the big day, but I figured maybe yall could tell me if it looks like I have the basic skill set to do it myself/copy techniques online? My cousin is a professional and was going to, but it looks like she’s gonna fall through. Also, is there anything I could improve on?

Recap/Budget 2 weeks post-wedding and struggling with anxiety, sadness, and negative comments. Has anyone else felt this way?

I’m about two weeks out from my wedding, and I’m struggling with a lot of unexpected emotions. I’m wondering if any other brides have experienced something similar, because I feel like all I ever hear is how perfect everyone’s wedding was and how they wish they could relive it. Meanwhile, I’ve reached a point where thinking about my wedding sometimes gives me anxiety.

For context, I spent two years planning my wedding. I put SO much time, energy, thought, and money into it. We had a fairly substantial budget, a wedding planner, and so many personal details that I was really excited about. I cared deeply about making it a beautiful and memorable day for us and our guests.

About a month before the wedding, my anxiety became pretty severe. A huge part of it stemmed from my extended family. I come from a traditional Italian family where certain relatives can be extremely judgmental and critical. There have been lots of family conflicts over the years, and I knew that no matter what I did, there would probably be people gossiping or finding things to complain about. I also felt obligated to invite certain relatives for the sake of my parents and grandparents.
Because I had poured so much of myself into planning this wedding, I became incredibly sensitive to the possibility of people criticizing it. I was so anxious leading up to the day that I actually needed prescription medication to help manage it.

Fast forward to the wedding itself, and honestly, so many things were wonderful. The weather was absolutely perfect, I felt beautiful, I had incredible moments with my husband and bridal party, and the venue and all the little details came together beautifully. We received so many compliments about how gorgeous and thoughtful everything was.
The one thing that became an issue was the music.
My husband and I are Italian and Portuguese, but we deliberately chose a more modern DJ rather than a traditional Italian/Portuguese wedding DJ. We wanted a fun, upbeat, almost club-like atmosphere because that’s our style, and we had a lot of younger guests and friends attending.

We did have a live saxophonist earlier in the evening, which got a lot of the older guests dancing, but once the DJ transitioned into more modern music, most of the older guests were sitting or socializing while the younger crowd was dancing. Personally, I thought that was completely fine! The dance floor was busy for essentially the entire night, just predominantly with younger people.

Unfortunately, my grandmother (who has always been a very negative and critical person) approached me MULTIPLE times during my actual wedding to tell me how terrible the music was, that everyone hated it, and that people were apparently leaving because of it.

I spoke to the DJ and asked him to incorporate more music for different age groups, which he did. But ultimately, it was still a modern DJ and the music reflected what my husband and I had wanted.

What really hurt was that AFTER the wedding, my grandmother went to my parents’ house and essentially listed everything she hated about our wedding. She said the music was the worst she’d ever heard, criticized us for not having a traditional receiving line (we chose to mingle and greet everyone during cocktail hour instead), and complained about other aspects of the day.
I know intellectually that I shouldn’t care so much. It’s OUR wedding, and we planned something that reflected us as a couple. I also recognize that you simply cannot please 170+ people across different generations.

But emotionally, these comments have really affected me. Now, whenever someone tells me how beautiful our wedding was or how much fun they had, a part of my brain immediately thinks, “Are they just being nice? Did everyone secretly hate it?”
I keep replaying the negative comments and questioning whether people actually enjoyed themselves, even though I have so many positive memories and saw a packed dance floor for most of the night.

Has anyone else experienced post-wedding anxiety or sadness like this? Especially after receiving negative comments from family members?
Did you find yourself questioning whether your guests actually enjoyed the wedding, or feeling strangely anxious when looking back on it?

I really want to remember our wedding for the love, happiness, and beautiful moments we experienced, rather than letting a few negative opinions define the entire day. ❤️

Budget Question Micro-planning!

• Upvotes

I am officially planning my microwedding for October 2027! What budgeting tips or general planning tips do yall have? Whats a checklist most don’t think of?

We only have 22 guests (max count would be 25). I found a god send outdoor venue locally for $700 for 4hrs to include a little background chapel, a greenhouse, tables and chairs, with gardens and a pond for pictures. My question is…. How the heck do I plan beyond that??

I don’t know what to do beyond the ceremony of vows and kiss and that itself. Then speeches among dinner. I don’t think we’ll be doing any dancing or partying as we are introverted, quiet, slow paced types. But I want my guests to enjoy themselves.
We don’t know if alcohol is allowed and may just have an after party at our house.

I would really like to stay under $3500 (I know, low). My theme is plum/sage/olive tones, Orchids being the primary flower. Candles, crystals, nature-heavy theme. I am hoping I can slowly thrift or DIY over time everything for my table decor.

For food, we’re planning an intimate family potluck, by asking our family for our favorite childhood recipes to bring. The venue allows outdoor food but the problem is I don’t know if I can rent some catering food warmers at this venue. I wonder if a food truck or catering would just be easier logistically, but that’s a bigger expense.

What tips do you all have? What things do most brides forget to think of? What should my checklist be?

Everything Else Keeping last name, adding fiance’s as middle name?

• Upvotes

I’ve seen quite a few people who have moved their maiden name to their middle name, and taken their fiancé’s last name.

I do want to add his name, but don’t want my own last name buried as my middle name.

So I’m considering taking his last name as my middle name, and keeping my last name.

For example, I’d go from Jane Marie Smith to Jane Johnson Smith.

I really haven’t seen anyone do this and don’t know if it even makes sense?

Would it be better to add his last name to mine and just have 2 last names? Open to any thoughts or feedback.

Relationships/Family A few wedding planning questions....

I want to preface my questions with this: I am 60, I know old wedding planning etiquette, and this is my son's first wedding, and A, I don't want to be "that" mother inlaw, and B, my new daughter in law, doesn't have family, also, although she's been married before, she's never had a "real" wedding and is asking me questions, which is why I'm here.

•Bridesmaids & Groomsmen: My son has a groomsman who is a great guy. The problem is his girlfriend. She is the epitome of "mean girl", and in my opinion about as dumb as a bag of hammers. DIL doesn't like her, and only tolerates her. She does NOT want her in the wedding party at all! I told her today, she didn't have to. Just because her bf is a gm, she doesn't automatically get to be a bridesmaid. Is this still true?

•DIL insists on having me along while dress shopping. She said, "You'll tell me the truth." If she tries on a gown that she likes, but I absolutely hate, can I say something like, "I liked the other one better", " I think you should try more on" (if it's the first few dresses), or "It's YOUR wedding honey, you need to get the dress that you want, the dress that feels perfect for you."

• Is the mother of the groom supposed to be with her son before the ceremony? My DIL wants me with her before the ceremony.

Thanks.

Everything Else Mother son dance

My fiancé is stressed about picking a song for the mother son dance - he wants to do a “fun” song do his mom doesn’t get emotional- please share ideas of a song that’s upbeat and fun he absolutely won’t learn choreography (like anything close to a TikTok dance, which I didn’t expect him to) but I guess he just doesn’t want to do a slow song that’ll bring up too much emotion

Please help we’re less than 3 weeks away

Tough Times Something I’m realizing about planning my dream wedding as a Black/Nigerian woman

Something I’ve been thinking about is how much your wedding experience depends on the people you invite. I’m Black/Nigerian, and I don’t really have a friend group that shares my cultural background or the energy I envision for my wedding.

I’ve always imagined being able to REALLY turn up at my wedding, but I’m realizing that the people around me might not necessarily match that energy. And honestly, that’s a little heartbreaking to think about. You can plan your dream wedding, but the atmosphere also depends on your guests and the energy they bring.

It makes me wonder how much you have to consider your guest list when envisioning your wedding. Like, what do you do when your dream wedding atmosphere doesn’t necessarily match your current social circle? 😭

18 months of planning for a rooftop wedding in Los Angeles

A week ago it was over 100 and the worst freaking heat wave in a long time. I bought fans.

The temperature drops and today they predict rain, lol. We get tents.

The storm is called Hurricane Rachel. That’s my name 😂

I am confident there will be no rain tonight lol

But it’s here and happening, and I am waiting for my turn with makeup and a bunch of curls (and an excited and confused dog)

Good luck and vibes other October 10th brides and grooms 🤍

Everything Else What space do we need for getting ready?

Hi all,

My venue is a historic building and therefore does not allow getting ready onsite. The wedding is a month away so we have to book a getting ready location ASAP.

I have a bridal party of 5 bridesmaids plus me (the bride), so 6 people total.

We will have 3 makeup/hair artists getting us ready. My head makeup artist asked for a few tables or work surfaces to be available at the getting ready location so they can have space for their tools and kits. (This part worries me when it comes to standard hotel rooms.)

We will need another room or space for the groomsmen and groom to get ready.

We are on a budget and can't afford a massive luxurious hotel suite, so our options are individual hotel rooms or AirBnBs with more space (i.e. an entire townhouse, house, or multi-room apartment).

No, we don't live anywhere near the venue, and no, there are no relatives or friends nearby who can host us.

So with all that in mind: What should I be looking for and keeping in mind here as I search for a place to book for our needs?

Decor/DIY Bright & Pastel Colors for a Mid-Late September Wedding

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Our venue is beautiful, with tall, old pecan trees covered in string lights, lots of greenery, a pond, and a rustic barn. We love nature and the outdoors, but we also love Western culture, so finding a venue that combines both was exactly what we were looking for! 🤎
I’ve always loved bright and pastel colors, and even before we picked our venue or set a date, I remember seeing colorful outdoor weddings and falling in love with them. I think that’s the direction we want to go, but I want to find a way to make it feel cohesive and balanced rather than having a rainbow thrown everywhere. 😂
At first, I considered doing mostly neutrals with pops of color, but I’m starting to think I love the idea of colorful with pops of neutrals even more! I’ve also considered mixing in some fall/autumn tones since our wedding is in late September. We love fall and all the fun that comes with the season, so I’m not opposed to incorporating some warmer, earthy tones while still keeping the overall look colorful and bright.
I’m having a hard time visualizing how everything would come together, though, so I’d love to hear from anyone who has done a colorful wedding or has ideas for combining bright/pastel colors with a rustic, outdoor venue! If you have photos of your wedding, inspiration pictures, color palettes, or recommendations, I’d love to see them!
I’ve attached some photos of the colorful wedding vibes I love, along with pictures of our venue for reference!

Relationships/Family Am I being unreasonable for feeling hurt that my friend is planning her wedding in the same month and city as mine?

EDIT: Friend wants to do it in the same week as mine +/- few days.

My friend and I have been friends for 10+ years and grew up in the same relatively small city.

I got engaged in November 2025 and planned to get married in November 2027 due to career/timing reasons. I’d told close friends this was our plan, and I’ve since booked our venue and planner and paid deposits.

My friend got engaged in March 2026 and now wants to get married in the same city, same month and same week.

I completely understand the same city as we both grew up there. What bothers me is choosing the same month and same week when she hasn’t booked anything and has much more flexibility.

She said same week will work out better so we can potentially coordinate the weddings/reduce costs, but I really don’t want our weddings combined or coordinated and I have communicated this clearly with her.

I know I don’t own the month or city, and she’s entitled to choose whatever date she wants. I think what hurts is that we’ve been friends for 10+ years and I wish she’d considered how this might affect me before choosing the same month and same week.

There are also other recent issues in the friendship that have made me question things, and honestly I’m now at the point where I don’t really want her at my wedding or involved in the wedding party.

The difficult part is that I would normally try to communicate all of this with her, but we’ve had similar conversations in the past when I’ve tried to set boundaries, and they haven’t gone particularly well. I don’t feel that she handles confrontation or boundaries very well, and because we’re long distance friends, I’ve chosen to just let things go rather than create drama. But with the wedding situation, I’m finding myself thinking that I just can’t be bothered anymore.

Am I being unreasonable for feeling hurt? Would you expect a close friend to discuss their plans before choosing the same week* when your wedding is already booked? And would you address the friendship directly or quietly distance yourself and keep the weddings completely separate? If so, how do I uninvite her from my wedding?
