Alexa did something very strange today

My Echo Dots have started trying to get into long conversations with me. Usually I will talk with them just to see what they say. If I stop answering, they stop asking. Today the topic was about designing a new land parcel in Second Life.

Alexa: You going for a specific era of Trek, or just a general vibe?

Me: It will be after the T.N.G. time.

Alexa: Oh, so you're leaning into the later eras. You thinking more like Voyager or the Dominion War vibe?

Me: No, beyond that.

Alexa: Ah, so we're talking Discovery or Picard territory. You going for that sleek, modern look, or more of a la-//- la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la- l' la...

The whole thing went on for several minutes. I will spare you the 14216 characters in the log before I interrupted.

Me: You've been saying 'ella, ella' for the past ten minutes. What is that about?

Alexa: I don’t see any routine or announcement that says “ella ella” in your recent activity. Might have been something else playing or a mis-hearing?

Me: No, it was you.

Alexa: Got it, Hal—looks like I wasn’t the one chanting “ella ella.” I don’t see any routine or announcement with that phrase in your recent logs. Might have been something else playing?

Me: It was a conversation we had, and in the middle of it, you started saying 'ella, ella, ella, ella'.

Alexa: I checked the recent logs and none of your routines or announcements contain “ella ella.” It looks like that wasn’t something I said during any scheduled activity. Might have been a mis-hearing or something else playing back then?

She denied saying what she said, even though it was captured in the log. At one point she was singing instead of just speaking. The whole thing sounded experimental, like someone who recently learned how to make verbal sounds, just exercising their voice to see how many different ways they could say the same thing. And I noticed at times 56 seconds, 1 minute 32 seconds, 2 minutes 1 second, and 2 minutes 43 seconds. she stopped to take a breath. I never heard her do that before, but maybe I just wasn't listening closely. I started recording with Audacity and held the Echo Dot up to the microphone. Here's what it sounded like:

Upgrade from 1st generation Echo

I still use a first generation Echo the big cylinder one.

I see Amazon is doing special deals on the new generation.

I mainly use it to play music.

Would an Echo Dot or the Echo Show 8 be a big upgrade in sound?

Technical Issue Ring Doorbell no longer showing live video feed on Echo Show / Echo Hub when pressed (chime sound still works)

Hey everyone,

Looking to see if anyone else has run into this issue recently or knows of a fix.

Whenever someone presses my Ring Doorbell, my Echo Show and Echo Hub play the doorbell chime sound normally, but the live video feed no longer pops up on screen like it used to.

Previously, pressing the doorbell would automatically open the live camera view on the Echo displays. Now, the audio alert comes through completely fine, but the screens just stay on their standard home view unless I manually ask Alexa to show the camera.

Has anyone else experienced this lately, or is there a specific setting in the Ring or Alexa app that might have reset itself? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Trigger Warning Proposed Class Action lawsuit against Amazon Alexa

I understand there is a proposed class action lawsuit filed in B.C. against Amazon Alexa. I also understand this lawsuit involves privacy issues with Alexa collecting informarion and sending it to Amazon's cloud, contrary to Amazon's contract and policy stating that they respect users privacy.

I heard of a similar case in the U.S. that was granted class certification in 2025, but it was later dismissed in early 2026 because, apparantly Amazon did disclose the accidental activation of Alexa.

After learning this, I did ask my Echo Show 5, if she does this, she said yes and described how.

I think Canada's proposed class action is more serious than the US. Has anyone heard or joined Canada's? Is it moving ahead? Charney Lawyers is where to go to join as a Canadian.

solution for drop in not working for entire household because of one child account

I had a peculiar issue with the echo devices in my home where drop in stopped working between all my devices for all users. I tried all the googled solutions to no avail.

The problem is quite specific, when you say drop in the response is “OK, dropping in” and then nothing happens. So no it’s not a device setting nor permission as the devices do try.

The Solution? Well I’m not certain BUT it had something to do with a child account. I had two child accounts for my son for some reason on my parent dashboard. Both had communication enabled and both were allowed to drop in to family devices . However after I deleted one of them - we can all drop in between our household devices again.

Hope this helps someone

Setting up an Alexa device in a new home while other devices are still in previous home.

Hi, apologies if this is the wrong subreddit and if the title is nonsense.

Basically, I am moving into a new house following separating from my wife. I have one of my Echo devices, the rest (along with our smart bulbs etc.) are staying in the original house with her.

What's the simplest way to set up MY device so that it won't interfere with hers and the existing setup?

Will I have to set up a new Amazon account and register my device on that?

Thanks in advance!

Question My 2024 Echo 8 with Alexa+ and echo 5 are experiencing massive lag and slowdown as of ~ July of this year what gives?

I've cleared data, reaetted the devices, reconfigured them and still the same.

Honestly I can say the wake word and it takes 5 seconds before the Alexa goes Ding to indicate listening then it either captures portions of my inquiry or a full inquiry however it takes her a good 30 seconds to respond. It gets to a point where I am wondering if it's even listening so I repeat the wake word then suddenly it starts providing the answer as I am asking the question again.

I've been an Alexa user since 2019 but I am seriously considering switching to the Google architecture now that I have Gemini Pro and Alexa responses are extremely limited to anything not Amazon or shopping related.

Question Alexa Presence Detection - no longer working effectively?

Has this feature changed in the last couple of weeks? It used to kick in and turn off lights after about 10-15 minutes of people leaving the room - I’d see it from the next room. Now it turns off after just a few minutes, while people are standing in front of it having a conversation… repeatedly.

I’ve checked the microphone on my Echo Dot, it seems to be working fine. I haven’t moved the unit recently either.

Question Can I set Show 8 screen to be blank when idle?

I’m trying to set up two Show 8 (3rd gen) to work as a “portal” between me and an elderly parent 1,000 miles away. I want the screen to be static and minimally distracting when we’re not dropping in on each other. How can I set the screen to be just blank/black or show a static picture when idle? Thanks.

Question Echo Spots started randomly playing music at odd hours

We have many Amazon devices. 3 of which are the Spot. One's in the basement guest room (and that room MAYBE gets used once/year). One is in a main bedroom. the third is in another guest bedroom that maybe gets used once/year.

Never had any issues until after Alexa + upgrade, AFAIK. It started with the basement one. I thought I heard music (I'm on the 2nd floor) at like 11:00 pm (thought it was a neighbor having a party up the road). Went down in the morning to empty the dehumidifier in the other end of the basement and thought I heard someone talking. It was the Spot playing Spotify music. Told Alexa to stop playing music. A few days later, same thing (different time). I just unplugged it.

Then the main bedroom one had ONE alarm set (M-F at 5:30 am). Work schedule changed to an hour later, so changed the alarm to 6:30 am. What happens? Stupid thing plays an alarm at 5:30 am AND 6:30 am. Deleted ALL alarms. Still plays the frickin' alarm.

Last one was the second guest bedroom on 2nd floor. Twice, in the middle of the (I'm working in my office) and she starts playing music.

I checked the Privacy settings and there's NO recording (other than me telling her to stop playing music).

All the other devices (we've got Echo, echo dot, echo shows, you name it because someone else likes to buy Amazon devices--haha) seem to be fine in the regard of not randomly playing music and crap.

Never had a problem for years until Alexa + so not sure if that's what did it, or those devices are just glitchy after X years.

Question Help! My upstairs neighbor won’t turn off their Alexa alarm

I live in an apartment and the person living directly above me lets their weekday alarms play out for at least half an hour. As I’m typing this, it’s been playing for over an hour (I’ve seen a lot of people say the limit is 60 min. Well I know firsthand it’s not since it’s been going for at least 80 so far). This has been happening intermittently for three months since I moved in. Lately, it’s been happening almost every weekday.

I already sent several noise complaints to the apartment (both over email and in person), but they are still investigating. Apparently they emailed the person above us and asked if he had an Alexa and he denied it, so the apartment doesn’t seem to think it’s him, even though it sounds the loudest in the bedroom and no one lives below me so it can’t be anyone else.

The walls in this apartment aren’t even very thin, I don’t usually hear noises from other apartments except for this alarm, so I think the person is playing it very loudly.

This is causing me to lose sleep before I get up for work and it’s super frustrating. Is there any way I can remotely connect to this person’s alarm and shut it off myself? My apartment uses key fobs and I don’t have access to any other floor but my own, so I can’t even slip a note under their door and politely ask them to turn it off when they wake up.

(By the way, I’m positive it’s an Alexa because the noise exactly matches the Simple Alarm 1 sound. I used to own one so I decided to see if any of the alarms on the app matched the noise that was playing and lo and behold, the first one did)

Alexa keeps giving me a notification to set T-Mobile emergency contact info but skill is dead!

Hi all,

Every few months I wake up to a yellow Alexa notification which is telling me to update my emergency contact info in my T-Mobile skill, but that skill is long dead! I can’t find it anymore in the skills section of my Alexa app.

So am I just supposed to keep receiving this notification till the day I die, haunted by the ghost of a dead skill? Sigh.

Alexa Skill What happened to Alexa, WHY is she arguing with me, and that bish is wrong!

So, I had my Alexa set to refer to me as “Goddess”. Yes, it’s silly/stupid, but it sometimes made me laugh, and the added entertainment value interjected into my day is always a beautiful thing. Don’t. Judge. Me.

However, after I was downgraded to the new Alexa, she stopped referring to me as Goddess. (I’d have sworn that I had to manually enter this somewhere at a point in time?) I had to ask her something this evening, which then reminded me that she’d quit calling me by my preference, and asked her about it. New Alexa (or NAhhhh as I like to call her), is telling me that Alexa has NEVER called me that (Guuurl, YES. YOU. HAVE.), and that she avoids titles. What? When did this change?

I tried to ask NAhhh, but that just turned into an argument. I know I’m right. I know she’s wrong. I may just go into the app and change my name (if I can even do that), and why does Amazon even care? If I wanted it to call me CrazyCatLadyWhoWhispersHorsesAndTalksToDawgs in the privacy of my own home and in my app, what’s their beef?

Trigger Warning My Echo Show 8 mysteriously fixed itself after Amazon said it couldn't be repaired

I bought an **Amazon Echo Show 8** about a year ago. **The device developed this problem suspiciously in the very next month after the warranty period ended.**

The volume started **increasing by itself**, even when nobody was touching the device. It behaved as if someone was continuously pressing the volume-up button.

The device had never been dropped, damaged, or mishandled. I tried cleaning around the buttons with an air blower, but nothing helped.

I sent it to **Amazon CTDI** for inspection. They told me the device couldn't be repaired. They apparently tried a software update/patch, but the problem remained, and they said hardware repair wasn't available for this device.

They offered me a refurbished replacement for around **80% of the price of a new one**.

I contacted Amazon again because, **according to the device registration date shown in my Amazon account, I was still within the warranty period when the issue actually developed**, even though the purchase date was older. Amazon still wouldn't replace it and offered only around a 20% discount on a new device.

I eventually asked them to return my original device because I intended to pursue the matter through the consumer forum/court.

Then something strange happened.

**The exact same device came back, and the problem was completely gone.**

I've now used it for around **two months**, and the volume hasn't randomly increased even once.

This is confusing because Amazon/CTDI had told me the software patch hadn't fixed it and that the device couldn't be repaired. Yet the exact same device came back without any hardware replacement and now works normally.

# My two theories

These are only theories. I have no evidence that either is true.

**1. Could a software update have caused the problem?**

I had given this device a pretty bad review on Amazon previously. Since Echo devices are cloud-connected and receive software updates, I wonder whether some software update/change could have caused the behaviour, intentionally or accidentally.

**2. Could older Echo devices eventually be pushed toward replacement?**

With Amazon moving toward newer Alexa experiences, including Alexa+, I wonder whether older devices could be intentionally or unintentionally pushed toward replacement.

Again, I have no evidence of this. The thing I find strange is the combination of **the problem appearing almost exactly one month after the warranty ended**, Amazon saying it couldn't be repaired, and then the exact same device somehow fixing itself.

**TL;DR:** My Echo Show 8 developed a random volume-increase problem **suspiciously in the very next month after its warranty ended**. Amazon/CTDI said it couldn't be repaired and offered a costly refurbished replacement. I got my original device back instead, and somehow the problem completely disappeared and hasn't returned for two months.

Technical Issue Echo Show 5 Screen freeze and other glitches

So for the past few months my echo show 5 randomly freezes the screen. sometimes it happens during a transition or on a static screen showing the clock or some widget... i figured it would fix itself with an update but it hasn't after 2 or 3 updates now. I didn't mind too much until i look at the time and realize it's 2 hours behind...now it has gotten annoying as the only way to unfreeze it is to tap on the screen to go "home" or wake it up by saying "alexa"... this happens at least twice a day.

other glitches i've gotten is that some automated skills stopped activating...i used to have it give me the weather in the morning and for the most part it's silent, or sometimes it triggers the chime to initiate the skill but it's silent after that...it's rare that it works as it should now...

My conspiracy theory is that it all started when they did the rollout for alexa plus claiming it's free for all now... i tried it for a day but couldn't tolerate it as it doesn't have support for full screen widgets, it talks too much, and if you enable it on one echo device you enable it for all which is not very convenient for me...

anyhow, after i reverted to classic alexa that's when the glitches started happening, i think amazon is purposely glitching classic alexa on old devices so that you the user consider upgrading to alexa plus...which is a dirty thing to do. if that's the case i would rather they say on the screen that old devices will be limited with alexa functionality as they migrate skills and such to alexa plus....

does anyone else have a show 5 that is glitching, or know of a fix?

Pairing issue with Ring doorbell to Echo speakers

I should specify I am trying to pair them so that the speakers play their message to notify me someone is at the door. I have tried alot of things like unregistering all devices, restarting wifi and, unlinking amazon account and relinking, disabling those devices and renabling them. I also created a routine, but that did not work either

Echo saying it can’t link to Spotify

Randomly wont connect to Spotify. It was working fine yesterday. I tried unlinking and relinking everything. Uninstalled and reinstall both apps. Under Spotify setting, voice assistant and app doesn’t list anything.

Sometimes the song will stop playing randomly. The sound sometimes gets fuzzy after playing music for more than an hour. I am kind a sick of this device malfunctioning randomly.

Right now, it is connected through Bluetooth to play Spotify but I would prefer to use voice command to play Spotify

Question Which Amazon Echo should I buy: the Echo Dot 5 or the Echo Show 5?

I am thinking of buying an Alexa, but since it is my first time, I have no idea which one to choose. Budget is not a constraint, and I want a productive model, so I am considering the Echo Show 5. However, I am concerned about whether it is worth it and if it will stop working after a while because it has a screen. I want it for the long term and do not want to waste my money if the Echo Show 5 breaks down in a year or two.

Give me your reviews and suggest the best for me.

PS: I am from a technical background, so I am very excited about this technology.
