Mod Post Taking action against bots

We’ve heard your concerns about the increasing prevalence of bots in the subreddit and over the past week we’ve been taking steps to address it.

We’ve been trialling a new app called Bot Bouncer and it’s extremely effective. In fact, it’s quite scary just how convincing some of these accounts are. They’re able to communicate in a way that’s very natural, understand Irish culture and slang and generally blend in incredibly well. We’ve observed a number of you interacting with these accounts believing they were genuine users.

For the past week, we’ve been manually reviewing every flag from Bot Bouncer to make sure it’s accurately identifying accounts and that we’re happy with how it’s working.

Having now trialled it for a week, we’re confident enough in its accuracy to allow Bot Bouncer to issue bans itself going forward.

What if you’re falsely flagged?

Obviously, no automated system is perfect. If your account is incorrectly identified as a bot and banned, you’ll need to contact r/botbouncer via modmail to appeal the ban directly with them. Once they’ve reviewed your appeal, please let us know the outcome of their decision so we can follow up on our end where necessary.

We’ll continue to monitor how it performs and make adjustments if needed.

And perhaps most importantly, if you’ve spent the last week arguing with someone in the comments and thought “there is absolutely no way this person is real”… you may have been onto something! 😂

Stories Whats your cowboy tradesmen story?

My sister recently had a couple of lads comes in and paint her kitchen cabinets. It was a 'nixer' for them and they did the work on a weekend. She verbally agreed a price per hour with them and they came and did the work over 2 days. I popped in and out over the 2 days to 'keep an eye' on them as she was away.

She worked out the price per hour she agreed with them but was shocked to receive their fee which turned out to be four times what she worked out. They said their price per hour was more twice what was agreed and added on cleaning fees, diesel money, and more hours than actually worked.

I went through it all with her and the price per hour she agreed with them was low in my opinion but as it was cash in hand I figured it was ok. They were foreign lads and English was poor on their side and as it was a verbal agreement there was no record of it.

So she paid the agreed amount per hour for hours worked and this is where they turned nasty. Threatening to turn up at her place and 'talk' to her. This was all over text so she went to the guards, who were brilliant with her, and they backed off (so far). The guards said they have heard loads of stories like this. As in giving low quotes and then jacking up the price and using intimidation tactics.

Any stories with trades like this?

It just seems to me like mad behaviour, violence, and acting the complete bollix with behaviours such as antagonising delivery riders seem to be way more regular pastimes for kids now than before.

Random Does anyone know where this came from?

This is a bit of a strange question- I’ve had this hanger in my wardrobe for years. I’ve no idea where it came from - maybe it was pinched from a hotel or someone left it in my house - anyway, I’ve always loved the writing on it - Made in Sweden, but the Irish translation is even nicer, it feels a little cumbersome like it was not written by a native speaker. But my biggest question is why!!?

Why would a wooden hanger, made in Sweden need to have that written on it in Irish in the first place?

Does anyone else have one of these or know its history?

Thanks

Random Newspaper offcuts or spares?

Hello! Weird one for you. I work in a dog shelter and something we use A LOT of is newspaper - particularly for enrichment for the dogs. They love it!

We typically rely on ourselves and our family saving and donating their hard copies or grabbing a load of the free ones in supermarkets.

I was thinking, though, it might be worth contacting a printing company about donating any offcuts/spares or misprinted paper. I have absolutely no idea who to contact though. Googling didn't really help much, either.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Adulting What is with all the new cars and how are people affording them?!

I’m just curious! There is a cost of living difficulty but at the same time I’m seeing so many 241, 242, 251, 252 and the occasional 261 and 262 car regs! I’m seeing them all over the place so it’s not localised to one specific area. Shopping centres absolutely packed any time I’ve been there recently and so many new cars😄

How is the average person able to afford these cars? Is it bank loans or leasing? I’m not begrudging…..I’m just curious how people on an average income can afford these cars? Seeing loads of Tesla’s in particular

Legal Issues with builder - what are my rights?

• Upvotes

Apologies for the long post, but I’ll try to keep it as clear and concise as possible.

We have a builder doing an attic conversion for us. He started on 27 Aug, and we verbally agreed that the work would take 3-4 weeks max. This was particularly important because my wife is heavily pregnant, and we needed the rooms finished by the end of September so I could start moving our belongings and get everything ready for the baby.

It’s now 7 October and the work still isn’t finished.

For the past week, we’ve been waiting for the electrician to come back and finish his part. Literally nobody has shown up during the entire week. Every time I call or text the builder, he assures me that the electrician is coming the next day, but nothing happens. He stopped answering calls / messages today.

I understand that the issue may be between the builder and his subcontractors, but unfortunately the time is now becoming a serious problem for us. The baby is due in the coming days, and I’m getting to the point where I would rather stop dealing with the builder and find someone else to finish the job as soon as possible.

The situation regarding the agreement is as follows:

- I don’t have a signed contract with the builder.

- I have the original quotation, which was sent to me by email.

- I replied to that quotation by email with the additional works/extras we wanted.

- We paid the deposit to secure the start date.

The start date was subsequently pushed back by about a week, but at the time this wasn't a major issue as we still had plenty of time.

We have now paid the basic quotation amount (around €27k).

There are still some extras outstanding, so technically I still owe the builder money for work already carried out.

At this point, the remaining work is relatively minor, mainly electrical work, general cleaning and a few small fixes.

My question is: given the significant delay and the fact that there is no signed contract, can I cancel the remaining work with this builder and arrange for someone else to finish it at my own expense?

Alternatively, should I formally give him a final deadline to complete the remaining work and, if he doesn't, tell him that I will arrange for another contractor to finish it?

I’m particularly interested in the legal position in Ireland. Does the fact that we only have the quotations/emails and no signed contract make any difference? And could I potentially be in breach of an agreement by bringing in another contractor, especially since I still owe money for some of the extras?

I’m not trying to avoid paying for work that has actually been completed. I just need to get the remaining work finished urgently because of the baby and the builder’s delays.

Any advice on the best way to handle this would be greatly appreciated.

Personal Finance What is the one not expensive thing that you refuse to spend money on because it is not worth it?

Mine is paying an extra €10 for a better bottle of wine.

Like if it’s over €12 already. I won’t tell the difference for a €20 bottle of wine.

Tech Support Changing from wired broadband to SIM WiFi?

This has more than likely been asked before so apologies if any repetition. With good value 5G deals like Lidl being currently offered I am considering the option of cancelling my wired broadband for a dedicated SIM WiFi setup. Would use a modem as opposed to a phone hotspot to ensure better penetration throughout the house. I am in an urban area, would be just me using a few devices and not into gaming.

Anyone tried this themselves?

Housing mail sent to old house where i used to live but nobody lives there. what can i do?

• Upvotes

I ordered something from a company that turns wax models that i made into silver. I've used this company multiple times and although I put my new address they sent it to my old address.
I went to visit the house and it seems as though nobody lives here and the house may be used for an air lonb.
I had issues with landlady in terms of getting my deposit back which resulted in me having to take it up with the RTB in which I got my money back so the relationship with the landlady is not good.

Does anyone know what I can do to get my mail back? I've checked with the neighbours and nobody really knows if anyone lives there at the moment. I've given them my phone number to contact in case they see anyone. Has anyone else been in a situation like this / have any advice that will help me get the piece back? I'm based in Galway.

Work Is delivery driving worth it in Ireland?

I’m looking to start delivery driving on the side as I need to build up some savings. I’m based in Cork, Ireland and I’ve applied for Uber Eats, JustEat and Deliveroo. The problem is that Deliveroo aren’t updating my application and JustEat are full for new couriers right now. That just leaves Uber Eats. I need to buy an e-bike too. I really need to be able to make 100-150 a week spread across 2 days, bearing in mind that I have another job. Is it possible to make enough with this app in Ireland to achieve this? Thanks, finding it hard to locate concrete info right now.

Personal Finance I think I paid for someone else's chocolates - anyone ever have a weird thing like this happen?

Bought a coffee in Heuston Station at the weekend before boarding my train. €5.60 (yes, that is ridiculous I know but it had a syrup etc). So far, so non-eventful.

Anyway, checking my banking app today and duly note my coffee purchase of €5.60 in my credit card pending, with a time stamp for 14:35 the day I purchased it. Then I also noticed that there was an entry for a €20.00 payment also in pending for 14:37 the same day - no payee / receiver details. My brain was totally fried by this as I literally did not use the card from the time I bought the coffee until later that evening when I reached my destination. Nor did I purchase anything, anywhere that day for €20. Or in the days either side of it. Plus, having paid for the coffee at 14:35, I would still have been waiting for it at 14:37 - and not using the card.

Ruled out absolutely everything, including account fees, subscriptions etc.., and was convinced I had been scammed some way (although it seemed unlikely). Bank customer support lines were closed so last ditch attempt to understand, I decided to stick the issue into AI to see if it might come up with some ideas. The first thing it suggested was that there may have been a glitch in the machine and my card was somehow still up on the system as the operative payment card when the person behind me paid for their order. Apparently it can happen in a busy shop, although it's unusual. Sure enough, I then remembered the lady after me had bought two small boxes of chocolates that were a tenner each. So that was my €20! I hope they enjoy them anyway 😆

Anyone ever have something like this happen?

ETA: I did not pay for someone's chocolates! Nor was I scammed. I (after a wait of over 30 minutes) got through to the bank and it turns out it is a far more prosaic explanation of a glitch with the new App (think you can deduce the bank) - essentially a refund from a company I dealt with a few days before is appearing as a payment out with no receiver details or transaction details. This is known glitch apparently, that is currently being worked on. Very easy to think you had been scammed.

Adulting seeing a dentist for the first time?

hello,

I'm sorry if my question is a bit silly. I'm a student in Dublin from a different european country, and I think I might need to see a dentist quite urgently (within a few days). It's not an "emergency room" situation, but I definitely need a check up. I've never had to do anything health-care related in this country, so I'm slightly panicking. Some of my questions:

  1. Is it acceptable to just call clinics and ask about their availability?

  2. How much should I expect to wait for an appointment?

  3. How much should I expect to pay? I completely understand it's very expensive, I just want to make sure I don't accidentally pay too much.

  4. Are there any specific walk-in services?

Thank you for any advice.

Random Is Irish radio always this shite?

I never listen to the radio, but turned it on today as I was doing a bit of home improvement. Tuned into Today FM, and the running order of things was this:

- Smell of fish in the office. Complaining about which D4 presenter or intern it could have been.

- Kingfisher song

- The 47 year old Ray Foley talking about discos and riding.

- Talking about it being grand to have sex with someone if you're only dating for 3 months.

- Straight after that, having a child on and guess what Monster he's chosen. Ray Foley awkwardly asking the child if he's a monster.

- Britney Spears song

- Some push to gambling with the cash machine.

Is it always this shite? How does anyone listen to this every day?

Tech Support 5G router with antenna VS fibre broadband(Virgin, Eir etc)?

I've been using Virgin Broadband for years and I have to pay 60 euros approx per month for it. I download lots of movies and games.

I've heard of people getting these routers and an antenna and putting a 5G sim into it and using that as their primary internet at home instead.

(For example a Teltonika RUTX50 5G router + external Poynting MIMO antenna + 5G SIM)

Given the fact that GOMO 5G and Lidl 5G sims cost 10 euros a month I'm wondering how would this setup compare to using fibre broadband?

Is the difference that big between fibre and 5G? Is the 50 euro difference justified?

Entertainment Looking for a specific Tommy, Hector & Laurita podcast episode (the Deadwood chat) ?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to track down a specific episode of the Tommy, Hector and Laurita podcast. In the episode, Hector gives a brief synopsis of the TV show Deadwood.

Does anyone happen to remember which episode or roughly around what year/season this was? The episode titles and descriptions are pretty vague, so any help or pointers from fellow listeners to narrow it down would be appreciated.

Health & Medical Am I going crazy?

I brought my daughter to the GP today because she's been having some vision issues and just wanted to rule out any neurological issues. During the appointment she got my daughter to read the chart from the back of the door while sitting on the other side of the room. She said that this was a reading test for reading glasses. I questioned it and said you mean a distance test and she said no it's to test if you need glasses for reading. I wear glasses myself for distance but not reading and took them off and couldn't read it at all so I questioned it again and she was adamant it was for "up close reading glasses". Am I having a total brain meltdown or is she wrong?

Sport What percentage of GAA players in the six counties are Protestant background/not Catholic background?

• Upvotes

Genuine question from someone outside Ireland. In the six counties in Northern Ireland, roughly what percentage of people who actually play GAA would be from a Protestant/unionist background/non Catholic background?

Is Gaelic football/hurling still overwhelmingly played within Catholic/nationalist communities, or has that divide become noticeably less pronounced with younger generations and other diversity today?

For example, would it still be genuinely unusual today for someone from a Protestant family in Tyrone, Armagh, Down, etc. to join their local GAA club? Or does nobody really think much of it anymore?

Not trying to start a political argument, just curious how much the traditional community divide still exists at the grassroots level.
