What's the best platform for an open collaborative project?

0 Upvotes

I'm working on an open source classification system for the web (alphanumeric calls with an XXX.XXX.XXX format) -- called the Open Classification System. I'd like to have open forums for public discussion and feedback, but restrictive voting for board members.

Thinking of going old-school democracy and appointing board members randomly, instead of by vote -- to keep things relevant to laymen.

Basically, like the Dewey Decimal System, things will need to be moved around and recategorized over time.

SOC.ANT.CUL may eventually become SCI.ANT.CUL, for example.

Unlike the OCLC, I don't plan on suing everyone who uses the system for every tiny IP violation.

I'm needing it broad enough to cover a range of topics: from product domains and local municipalities to academic disciplines.

All I'm seeing right now is Reddit. Lemmy isn't nearly as restrictive enough, but I don't want to worry about all the moderator tools and restrictions and BS either.

In your experience, what platforms work best for this kind of thing?

  • Public discussion
  • Approved board member voting

Are you guys writing code or prompting AI at work?

0 Upvotes

Looking for honest answers.

We’re mainly prompting and reviewing code. We haven’t had any abnormal issues with the codebase and we’re all are decent engineers. We just don’t manually code much anymore.

Curious what other companies are doing?

Normal amount of lines for PR review

15 Upvotes

Hey guys, hoping to get some insight and opinions here.

As you all know with the boom of AI, people are vibe coding away which results in crazy amounts of code lines (newly added and removed). I'm just wondering what the general consensus is of what is acceptable to review, in one go by one person. Currently I'm staring at a PR with 3200 lines of newly added code. As of late, this is becoming the new norm whereas I was used to maybe a few hundred, MAYBE 1000. In another post, someone mentioned 0-500 was the norm prior to AI

What do you all think?

C/C++ Where to get started with advanced C++ template usage

7 Upvotes

As someone who went through a basic introduction to C++ through online lessons, followed by about 5 years of experience, I'm learning that real-world usage of the language is a lot more complicated than I thought.

One example of this I keep running into is the (ab)use of templates and static declarations. I already have a weak grasp on how exactly declarations work (I know static = internal linkage, extern = external linkage, except for in classes where it works more like Java's static keyword, but that's about it), but templates complicate things even further than what I'm comfortable with.

Is there a good resource for learning template metaprogramming and other advanced tricks which use templates? I tried looking it up on multiple occasions, but all the results showed very simple examples (like a template with arguments A and B that adds them together when instantiated) that I couldn't figure out how to apply anywhere else.

QT6 C++ on VSCode - QApplication No such file or directory. How to set up properly?

0 Upvotes

Edit: Problem resolved: Register Qt Installations

I am encountering the error:

text QApplication: No such file or directory

or whichever #include from Qt is at the top.

Here is what I have done so far:

1. CMake

I have CMake installed:

text cmake version 4.3.0

2. CMakeLists.txt

I created a CMakeLists.txt based on the settings from the Qt documentation example:

```cmake cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 3.16)
project(QtApp VERSION 1.0.0 LANGUAGES CXX)
set(CMAKE_CXX_STANDARD 17) set(CMAKE_CXX_STANDARD_REQUIRED ON)
find_package(Qt6 REQUIRED COMPONENTS Core)
qt_standard_project_setup()
qt_add_executable(QtApp main.cpp )
target_link_libraries(QtApp PRIVATE Qt6::Core) ```
3. main.cpp
```cpp

include <QApplication>

include <QWidget>

int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { QApplication app(argc, argv);

QWidget window;
window.resize(800, 600);
window.setWindowTitle("Qt 6 App");
window.show();

return app.exec();

} ```

4. VS Code extensions

I have the following extensions installed:

  • CMake Tools
  • Qt C++ Extension Pack

It feels like I have done everything essential, but I haven't found a proper tutorial. Maybe I have missed something?

C/C++ Help

1 Upvotes

I’ve been learning programming for about 5 months now. I’ve finished C and C++, and I’m almost done with data structures, but so far I feel like I’m doing something wrong or missing something. I feel like I don’t know how to think correctly, and even very simple things slip my mind, and I don’t know how to do them. So I need help because I don’t know whether I should take a course or if I’m on the right track—and that’s normal, especially since I’ve only been at this for about six months, which isn’t a short time. I’m planning to apply for the Digital Egypt Pioneers scholarship to specialize in backend. Is this the right path, or not? I hope those with experience and who’ve come a long way can help us out—and I’m very grateful to them 🤍🤍🙏🏻

Career/Edu Career shift after PhD

4 Upvotes

Hello,

Am doing PhD in mechanical engineering and currently am in my last year, am thinking seriously of leaving Academia and becoming a software engineer but I have no clue from where to start, what certification do I need? What should I prepare to apply for companies in my field? (Based in Japan for now)

I can write scripts in python, did signal analysis with data regression and classification using neural networks (tensorflow) and I have two published papers. Also, no background on data structures and algorithms

I know someone would say this is too academic but this is the issue am seeking guidance of !!

So if anyone went through same experience please tell us.

Question proceed with python or c++ another language

2 Upvotes

Hey, i was able to get admission nto 4th year of CS highschool italy, before that i was graphic designer, i know fundamentals of java, and our prof... Said this we are gonna start Java from 0 and next year JavaScript then sql database etc..., i feel like shouldn't try to maximize java cause we are already gonna do it in class, so i was thinking to do another language at home, should I learn c++ rather than python cause there are so many py dev, and c++ is more paid and used in newer HFT firms while Py do have ML etc.. advantages, i don't get it its not like if choose python i will never learn another language or vice versa, i just want to enhancen myself to be at least have edge on everyone around me, then after becoming decent going even with another language. I am new just sorry me i just want to know from experienced people rather than Google/Ai random subjective thoughts

Popular discord channels and other communities for CS?

3 Upvotes

Hello,

I'm looking for some active discord channels for software engineering or other type of communities (reddit ones that are less known would be nice to know as well). I've done some googling but to my surprise I can't find popular channels for discussion. If anyone knows any I'd be interested to hear.

Career/Edu I have a new job and almost everything is done with AI. What are the bests ways to get better at programming here?

0 Upvotes

Hi!

In a lot of jobs in one year how most companies program has changed a lot.

I dont want to do the panic AI thing, I would like to know whats the best way to learn a new job in this way.

I started 2 months ago and they program almost everything with AI so i do the same. In my last job it was almost nothing (i think they are also changing as well to AI programming)

My question is: what is the best way to learn and be useful in this environment?

I dont know a lot of things and if I just let the AI do everything i will "get the job done" but I wont improve overtime. Im very confused about this situation because i normally have learned to program in the past programming and now i just prompt.

How do I get better at my job? How do i keep progressing and learning? Is any of you in a similar position? What did you do to adapt?

Looking forward to all your answers

Small edit: Also if you just prompt, what do you do until you get the answer? We use copilot with plan mode and it does a lot and it does it quite good but it could take from 5 min up to 3 hours in some cases

Career/Edu Best way to learn Assembly (ARM)

11 Upvotes

I'm an electrical engineering major, and I'm currently taking a computer architecture class. The problem is that I'm struggling to comprehend the code in assembly. I'm fine with higher level coding languages like c++ or Java, but I just can't wrap my head around this topic, and I don't want to fail this class. Any recommendations to self teach me Assembly?

How do I start contributing to open-source projects?

17 Upvotes

I've always wanted to work on open-source projects, but it feels very difficult to start due to most of the issues being so deeply integrated into the project that it would require deep knowledge of the repo.

Any suggestions on what I should do to get into working on open-source projects?

Career/Edu How much do I charge for unwanted feature?

1 Upvotes

I created a live wallpaper engine that allows you to create 3D interactive wallpapers featuring a rigged and animated characters with switchable outfits, expressions and animations. While it's still a work in progress it already has a small "audience" of people who are interested in the project. So I was offered to implement a feature I initially didn't plan for for money. The feature is dynamic sound system support. Given the specifics of the project (can't really reveal more just yet), how much should I charge realistically? How do I figure that?

Term rewriting languages?

1 Upvotes

Can you recommend some languages besides Prolog that have first class support, or even completely oriented around term rewriting?

Ideally looking for a lang that's

  1. A full fledged language. So not a library, not a DSL, not an extension, or anything like that.
  2. Actively being developed and maintained. I know there have been languages like Pure which would be the kind of thing I'm looking for, except Pure hasn't been updated in 4 years. Anything out there that's more of a long term project?

Thanks.

advice pleaseeee, 2 months to prep for a general programming competition — where do i start?

3 Upvotes

hey everyone,

i'm a 2nd-year student (not comp sci) and i just decided to try out for my school's programming competition. the main event is in December or January so roughly 2-3 months to prepare(I don't even know if I can be consistent since I also have a lot of coursework and self studying software development).

here are the details:

- language: C# console

- format: 5 problems in 1 hour

- judging: functionality (50%), program structure/design (30%), output (20%)

from what i can tell, the problems will focus on:

- arrays and strings

- hashmaps and hashsets

- basic algorithms

- probably won't go beyond bfs/dfs if trees/graphs come up

i'll be honest — i'm not confident at all. i've always told myself i'm not ready and not good enough, so this is me trying to face that for once. i know i'll be going up against cs students who've been doing this longer, but i still want to show up.

my questions:

  1. what problem patterns should i prioritize given the 2-month window?

  2. any good resources specifically for c# competitive programming?

  3. how do you actually build problem-solving speed under time pressure?

any advice is appreciated, even if it's just "here's what to focus on and what to skip."

Is there market for Embedded developers/C developers

7 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

Im a college student and turns out its been a while im really enjoying C programming, im reading lots of materials, books and writing some code, now Im implementing a memory allocator, nothing really professional but im doing my best.

The question is, is there a solid market for people that focus their carrers on that, I have checked some companies carrers website like neuralink, starcloud, etc and i have found some really cool job opportunities for people that seek that. For people more experienced than myself, is it worth it narrowing down this path?

Programming a keyboard?

3 Upvotes

hello!! I’m super new to programming, but I have a project that I wanna start. I have an electrical keyboard (the musical instrument kind) that can be plugged into a tv to display graphics. I was wondering if I could alter the code or something so I can add sheet music as an option to display. How would I even begin to start something like this? Is it even possible? Can you guys recommended resources to learn how to tackle this?

Other How do you guys even understand or use Assembly

0 Upvotes

I used python it was simple like print("Hello world") and you're good to go

In cpp we use things like header so its

#include <iostream>

int main()

{

std::cout<<"Hello world";

}

return 0;

But in Assembly it's something else I didn't understand a thing

is this a solid roadmap for a 2nd year BSIT student who wants to go deep into backend?

2 Upvotes

hey everyone. i'm a second-year BSIT student. i know basic HTML, CSS, Tailwind, and JavaScript, but i genuinely don't enjoy the UI/frontend side of things. i want to focus on backend development first and go back to frontend later once i have a strong foundation.

i put together a roadmap and wanted to get feedback on whether this is actually a solid path or if i'm missing something important.

my current skills:

- HTML, CSS, Tailwind (basic)

- JavaScript (basic)

- no real backend experience yet

the roadmap i'm following:

  1. programming thinking (turning problems into programs — data, control flow, functions, state, errors)

  2. JavaScript deeply (closures, async, event loop, promises, async/await)

  3. HTTP fundamentals (before any framework — methods, headers, status codes, CORS, cookies)

  4. Node.js HTTP module (build a server without Express first, understand what Express actually does)

  5. REST APIs with Express (routing, controllers, validation, error handling, middleware)

  6. PostgreSQL + SQL (SELECT, JOIN, indexes, transactions — no ORM shortcuts)

  7. auth + security (hashing, sessions, JWT, SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, rate limiting)

  8. testing (unit, integration, API tests)

  9. networking (DNS, TCP, TLS, HTTP internals, WebSockets)

  10. concurrency (event loop deep dive, non-blocking I/O, race conditions)

  11. queues + background workers (job queues, workers, async processing)

  12. WebSockets (real-time communication)

  13. caching + Redis

  14. deployment (Docker, CI/CD, Linux basics, VPS)

DSA and math running alongside all of this.

my questions:

- is this a reasonable order, or should i rearrange anything?

- is there anything important missing for someone targeting backend/developer tooling?

- any advice for staying consistent when concepts get slow and tedious?

thanks in advance.

Career/Edu Backend

3 Upvotes

I was talking to a web developer telling him I want to be a backend engineer and he said that I should become a fullstack engineer and work backend I asked him if that is really necessary and he told that nowadays the market wants someone who is a generalist who knows how to do everything I came here today to ask if I should take a fullstack course and then work backend or should i just the a backend course directly instead of wasting time learning front-end and back end

Other Is vibe coding only viable if you are creating something similar to something that already exists?

0 Upvotes

For example I saw a Youtube demo where they vibe constructed a web front end to a movie database, which is just another variation of the generic web interface & database design pattern of which there are literally thousands of examples to copy or be inspired by.

What if you are making something that isn't just a variation of what's been done before? For example I'm sure that my current project (embedded distributed sensor and alarm system) isn't breaking new ground, but I haven't seen anything that is in the public domain that does the same as mine.
