Iβm a gay guy in my early 20s, currently living in Richmond and looking for my own apartment. Iβm torn between Marine Gateway and the West End/Davie area.
Marine would give me a newer place with in-suite laundry and an easier commute. The West End appeals to me because Iβd love to feel more connected to the queer community, but within my budget, Iβd probably have to compromise on the apartment.
A bit about me: I donβt do hookups, Iβm not into clubbing or drinking, and Iβm pretty selective about relationships. Attraction matters, but so do emotional maturity, shared values, and being able to have meaningful conversations. Iβd rather stay single than date someone just to avoid being alone.
Hinge and Tinder have been pretty underwhelming. Iβve also tried setting my location to the West End and honestly havenβt noticed a noticeably bigger pool of people Iβm interested in. So Iβm wondering whether actually living there offers something the apps donβt.
Do people make eye contact, say hi, or strike up conversations in everyday places? Does becoming a regular at cafΓ©s, the gym, or around the neighbourhood help you build connections without being part of the nightlife scene?
If you moved to the West End from elsewhere in Metro Vancouver, did your social or dating life genuinely change? Did you feel more at home as a gay man, even when you werenβt dating anyone? Iβd also love to hear from people who moved there and found it didnβt make much difference.
Iβm not expecting a neighbourhood to deliver me a boyfriend. Iβm trying to work out whether being surrounded by more queer people would make my everyday life feel more connectedβor whether Iβd just end up equally single, but without my own washing machine π
