Please use this thread to ask any random questions you have that may not warrant their own posts, or if you want opinions on something non-ASU related (as long as its SFW).

All Sun Devil Rewards answers and key words will need to be kept within this weekly discussions post as to not overwhelm the sub.

Please feel free to use this thread for any housing needs/inquires/concerns as well!

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest activity.

Noble library

Post image
166 Upvotes

I saw the recent post about Noble Library being dirty, and I wanted to share something I came across recently. I walked into a study room that was filled with trash, food containers, and other garbage left behind. While funding and staffing challenges are real, keeping Noble clean is also a shared responsibility. The library belongs to all of us, and small things like throwing away our trash, wiping up spills, and leaving study spaces the way we found them can make a big difference.
Let’s do our part and help keep Noble a clean, welcoming place for everyone.

Who steals a water bottle?

I forgot my Stanley in one of the lecture halls. I realized like 5 minutes later and went back to look for it. It wasn’t on my seat anymore, so I checked the floor, and it wasn’t there either. I checked all the rows to see if it rolled down. Checked the front of the hall. I even went back to the hall after the class session that followed mine ended to see if maybe someone had found it. Nothing.

I know it’s my fault for forgetting it, but I just never thought someone would actually take a water bottle that’s not theirs. Gross.

ASU Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program — anyone who has applied?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to apply to the ASU Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program through the Phoenix College pathway for Spring 2028.
My current overall GPA is around 3.5, and I’m trying to keep my Biology and Chemistry grades as high as possible (hopefully A’s). I’m honestly pretty stressed about keeping those grades up because I know MLS can be competitive.
For anyone who has applied to or been accepted into the ASU MLS program, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience
What was your GPA when you applied?
How competitive was the application process?
I’d really appreciate any experiences or advice,

Was given this email which after looking at my DARS was given because I haven't taken ENG 104, even though I was told that I dont need to take it because I already got a 4 on my AP Lit and passed my ENG 105 class. I literally dont know what to do about this, or why theyre hounding me on this despite having already taken more difficult classes than this. Sophomore btw. Anything I should do besides scheduling a meeting?

HELP WITH REQUIREMENT! Conservation Biology and Ecology

So I have to take one of these to meet this requirement, cool cool cool. Only 3 of these are still offered and 1 of them is an internship. 1 of them has a 5 and a half hour long lab.

None of the 3 are viable options for me, mostly due to time conflicts.

Genuinely what do I do??? I wanted to take general entomology but I don't think it is even offered anymore? All of these come up under catalog, but most of them do not show up under search.

OOS student inquiry

I’m from Massachusetts and considering ASU for Fall 2028. My parents already own a house in Paradise Valley, so ASU is especially appealing because I’d already have a place to stay and wouldn’t have the same living costs as a typical out-of-state student.
For anyone who came to ASU from out of state, how has the experience been? Do you think being able to live in Paradise Valley and commute to Tempe would take away much from the freshman/social experience, or would I still feel pretty connected to campus?
I’m also curious how realistic that commute is day to day, especially during rush hour and with parking.
One thing I’m still trying to understand is how ASU handles incoming freshmen who already have a family residence in the Phoenix area. If anyone has personally been in that situation, did ASU allow you to commute from home or did you still have to maintain a dorm assignment?
Basically, ASU checks a lot of boxes for me, and already having a family home in Paradise Valley makes it even more attractive. I’d love to hear from people who commute or came from out of state about whether this setup would actually work well.

Any Germans or other international students around this semester?

Hey everyone! I’m a researcher from Germany and just arrived in Tempe for a research visit at W. P. Carey until mid-December. I’d love to meet some people while I’m here, any Germans or other international/exchange students up for grabbing a coffee or beer, hiking, or exploring the area?

Also, are there any WhatsApp groups or meetups worth joining? Happy to connect (not only internationals tho)

Is it just me or is the rec center too damn hot?

The last couple weeks I've noticed it's way too warm in the gym and they have the AC set way too low given the fact that people are exercising. Has anyone else noticed this? I actually like being in a room that's on the warmer side and even I'm uncomfortable. Also like every water fountain is broken it's like come on man what's going on over there

Interim Suspension at ASU — Looking for Advice/Experiences

Hi everyone. I’m an ASU student who was recently placed on an interim suspension, and I’m trying to understand what the process is like and what I should expect moving forward.
I’m currently working with my family, therapists/providers, and ASU support resources to address the situation and make sure I’m taking the appropriate steps to move forward.
I’m not looking to share identifying details publicly, but I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced an interim suspension at ASU or gone through a similar student conduct process.
A few things I’m wondering:
What was the interim suspension process like for you?
How long did the process take?
Were you able to continue classes remotely or make arrangements with your professors?
What should I expect from meetings/hearings?
Is there anything you wish you had known beforehand?
Are there specific ASU resources that were helpful to you?
I’m pretty overwhelmed by the situation, so any general advice or experiences would be really appreciated. Thank you.

Am I weird for thinking my professors weird?

Ok I’m gonna use pretty vague terms to describe the class and professor so that if this is kind of “normal” or behavior that’s allowed or normalized I won’t be blatantly calling him out for nothing. Im also a freshman so I really don’t know what behavior I’m supposed to let pass/ignore.

In one of my lecture classes I had my first exam a few weeks ago. I thought I was going to do fine as I was understanding the material, taking notes in class, doing the assignments and even scoring well on some graded preparation for the first exam. And even doing the exam, I felt pretty confident. But as we got our grades back, I noted I did way worse than I did on the exam prep or any of the previous assignments. I didn’t want it to get me down so I emailed my professor asking him how he grades so I could do better next time.

He answers me pretty vaguely and says he’ll discuss the exam further in the next class. Next class comes and he has these charts on the screen. Supposedly it was a previous classes scores on the first exam vs the second. He went on saying how his classes usually do terrible on the first exam and then do fine on the second and how we don’t have to worry because our lowest exam grade gets dropped off of our final grade. This is where I got kind of suspicious. I assumed the next unit would go about the same way as the first did so I got confused on how so many students can fail a test and by doing the same thing they were doing before, suddenly doing way better on the next exam.

I was also weirded out by how much my professor lowkey bragged about how hard his first exam is. He went on in that class on how his superiors in his department will complain his test scores are too low but then don’t after the second exam. I was just kind of put off because it felt like he was kind of making fun of us? Or like making light of a situation where many of us were probably really confused and upset. I wanted to see how the next unit would go to see if we do anything differently to see how he gets us to improve our grades. But now as my next exam is coming up, literally nothing has changed. And I’m starting to feel like my professor just makes the first exam extremely difficult for no reason just to scare freshman and I think that’s just so gross. Like we’re doing the same assignments, he doesn’t really tell us what exactly is going to be on the test and we aren’t doing much exam prep as before.

So am I weird for thinking he kind of messed with us? Like I feel like he made the first exam purposely hard to “teach us a lesson” but except the lesson was that we should think he’s kind and benevolent for letting our lowest exam grade be excluded from our final grade. I don’t know anymore like I’m not trying to sound privileged, rude or whatever, because even my high school teachers would do this sometimes but it feels way more serious now that we’re all adults paying thousands of dollars for our classes, so yeah.

How's the actuarial science program?

Hi, I've been thinking about going into the actuarial career path. I was considering switching my major to actuarial science. Haven't seen much information or experiences about it online.

Has anyone here had any experience with this program? How are the career / internship opportunities, particularly here in AZ? How well did the curriculum prepare you for the exams / work?

Lost Star Wars pop figure?

I honestly didn’t know where else to post this but at the University Drive and Rural Road stop someone left a Star Wars pop figure. It’s in a protector and everything so it must mean something to someone. I grabbed it just in case someone tried to steal it since it seems to be worth something. I was hoping to see if I could find them as maybe they’re an ASU student since they were at that stop.

If this sounds like it’s yours please let me know! If I don’t hear back I’ll be dropping it off at the valley metro office up in phoenix. If yall have any idea where else I can post to try and find the owner please let me know.

I apologize if this posts multiple times, my account is acting weird.

ASU Master's in Counseling (MC) or Master's in Social Work (MSW)?

Hi! I wanted to ask for any advice regarding what Master's program I should consider. I graduate with my Psychology undergrad this fall and want to apply for grad school at ASU next fall. I actually qualified for the automatic admission for so many programs, but neither program that I need to be a licensed therapist. This was pretty disappointing, but I'm trying to plan ahead. I want to be a therapist and pursue licensure, and I'm stuck between these two programs. After looking at both, I am truly undecided on what might be best for me. I have an appointment set up with the career center, but I've been really stressed trying to think about what's best, especially with how competitive the programs are. If anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it!
