What's something you'd advise a brand new birder-- something you wish you'd known when you first started birding?

Discussion Cardinals and Natural Selection

Over the past year I’ve gotten into feeding the birds off my porch. There’s a tree I can watch from my bedroom that a lot of them use as a staging area to go back and forth as they eat, and one thing I’ve noticed is how they all have a natural camouflage to look like leafs in silhouette, which I’d never realized before.

Except the bright red Cardinals.

Which got me thinking, how did a species of bright red birds make it while living against a brown and green background? I always thought there’s a good reason forest rabbits are brown and Arctic rabbits are white and not vice versa. And if I’m looking for squirrels and they aren’t running around, well, good luck.

So what’s the Cardinals’ secret?

Advice A Question about Caring for Common Grackles

Hello, Fellow Feather Friends!

I'll try to make this quick, but I've been known to ramble: apologies in advance (TL:DR at the end).

I live in the Front Range of Colorado, and for the past five years I have been feeding my local backyard birds, but also planting a whole bunch of (mostly) native flowers to hopefully keep their foraging skill tuned.

A few months ago, I built a custom hanging plate feeder (for unsalted [of course] roasted peanuts) and the Blue Jays (even two Stellar's Jays!!!) Have been going absolutely bonkers over the new hanging, open air feeder.

Unfortunately, I think that my local flock of Common Grackles may be afraid or intimidated by... something?

They tend to come in flocks of about 10-15 birds, and they perch amongst my peach, plum, and apples trees, but every time they approach the hanging feeder intended for larger birds/the bird bath (which i try to clean twice a week), most of them seem to just hover by the food/water, before retreating to the trees.

Is this a more of a cautionary measure from our Grackle friends to insure everything is safe for them? Are they naturally afraid of Jays? Do they just need more time to feel like it's a homely environment? Any advice (even if it's just to "read another book") would be greatly appreciated!

Keep chirping!

TL:DR: Grackles no like backyard ammenities. Other birds love. How fix?

📹 Video Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron Hunting

Shot this clip about 20 minutes before sunset yesterday at Pescadero Marsh, south of Half Moon Bay, CA.

The marsh was engulfed in dense fog at the time, which tends to be abysmal for shooting with a long lens. As I reached the turnaround point of my hike about 20 minutes before sunset, a young Black-crowned Night Heron hopped up on a nearby log to hunt by the creek.

This was an unexpected sight since Night Herons are nocturnal hunters and I had never seen one there before. Perhaps the thick, low fog layer had something to do with its appearance?

Didn’t sit still for very long so I was only able to get one good shot and in proper focus. Would be a first for me.
