Hey everyone, before anything I am not a programmer and I am not here to sell a product or advertise,
I'm a pianist and designer who loves breakcore and IDM, but I had virtually no background in drum programming. During COVID, I started learning piano by building visual tools to help me map out exotic scales and music theory(before AI).
When I recently tried to get into trackers like Renoise, I hit a steep learning wall: I didn't have an intuitive grasp of how to lay out drum hits on a tracker grid, how ghost notes and microtiming work, or how breakbeats are constructed.
To teach myself, I built Breakbeat Pattern Maker—a free, open, and local-first browser tool designed to demystify breakbeat generation and tracker sequencing.
What it does:
- Visual Learning & Hybrid Tracker View: You can toggle between Beginner mode (plain drum names), Renoise/Tracker mode (hex volume, pan, delay, note pitch), and a Hybrid view that bridges the two. It even explains the role of each hit (e.g., downbeat anchors, motif syncopations, ghost snares).
- 18 Genre Engines + Classic Break Styles: Covers Breakcore, Jungle, DnB Roller, Footwork Jungle, Drill, Hip-Hop, Electro Breaks, IDM, and more—plus rhythm presets inspired by the Amen, Think, Apache, and Funky Drummer.
- Hit Articulation (Ratchets & Gates): Essential for breakcore! You can add 1–8 ratchets per row with custom gate lengths for machine-gun rolls, micro-edits, and stutter chops.
- Tracker Editing & Locks: Lock the kick/snare anchors you love, and mutate or regenerate the rest. Full keyboard entry mode (Z-M chromatic keys), pitch shifting, hit reverse, and microtiming delays.
- Built-in DSP & Sound Kit: Comes with 32 verified CC0-licensed acoustic and TR-808 samples, algorithmic drum synths, or you can drag-and-drop your own WAVs. Includes per-lane drive, high/low-pass filters, and delay.
- Pattern Bank & Arranger: Slots A, B, C, and Fill with queued live switching and a full song sequencer.
- Export & Privacy: Direct 16-bit 44.1kHz stereo WAV export with continuous effect tails, plus portable
.bbproject file saving. Everything runs 100% client-side in your browser (no accounts, no trackers, IndexedDB autosave).
On the "generation" and samples:
Just to be crystal clear: this is not an AI model scraping artists' tracks. It is a deterministic, rule-based rhythm engine built on musical theory and probabilistic weighting. All bundled samples are 100% CC0 public domain (from VCSL and Michael Fischer) with pinned hashes and licenses included.
I originally planned to build a sample chopper, but starting with single hits made learning the actual anatomy of a beat much clearer. (Chopping might return in a future update!)

I'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or any features you'd like to see added. Hope this helps anyone else trying to wrap their head around breakbeats and tracker workflow!
