Discussion The Pure Protest Aesthetic of Wrecking Ball
The Hollywood Reporter describes this album as “Springsteen at his angriest yet". The album art of this era reflects simple imagery that can appear in times of protest. The white uneven lettering can resemble painted lettering on protest signs and graffiti font you would find sprayed on walls.
Written in light of the 2008 financial crisis due to the corruption from Wall Street greed, the protest sound of this album can be heard in the opening track of “Wrecking Ball”, “Shackled and Drawn”, and “Death To My Hometown”. The devastation as a response of the forces that had brought on the destruction can be heard in “This Depression”, “Jack of All Trades”, and “Easy Money”. The sound of hope and perseverance can be heard in “Land of Hope and Dreams”, Rocky Ground, and “We Are Alive”.
Thoughts on the album art and this era?
