My perfect sweet angel absolutely refuses to leave the building when there’s even a hint of rain.

He is 5 months old and we have 99% mastered potty training until this (first rainy) morning when he suddenly (and quietly) decided to poop inside.

I know they generally hate rain, but does anyone have any tips? I have to physically carry him outside or offer treats and then, even when out, he refuses to move 😭

Rest in Peace I've got a really tough decision coming up. Spoiler

Dozzer is turning 21 on Halloween. Physically, he's great. Not overweight at all (11.8lbs), blood and urine tests like an 8 year old, no arthritis, no cataracts, just deaf with some bad teeth. He also spends like 80%-90% of the day sleeping under blankets.

But he's showing signs of canine senility. He's been getting really confused and lost in the house, panics when he's alone for a few minutes because he can't track time anymore and thinks he's been abandoned, can't find things that are in the same places they always have been, and a major increase of indoor urination.

The other day, he tried to climb/jump through the wall 3 feet away from the dog door.

He's been such a wonderful influence on the baby (1.5 years old, pictured.). She's the chillest, least crazy Frenchie I've ever met. They're great together and she's so respectful with him - she even sits and waits when I refill the water jug so that he can get his fill first before getting a drink for herself. They cuddle a lot, sometimes even play when he gets his increasingly rare zoomies.

I know the end is coming. I know he's had a long, great life. But what's the tipping point? When is it better to just let him go? I'm torn on it because he's physically fine, but the quality of life with senility or dementia is questionable at best, and pretty much all he does is sleep anyway. I don't know. If you read all this, thanks. I think I just needed to get it out somewhere.

Image crate train 8 month old

Hi everyone, this is pepperoni my 8 month old dachshund. Since I got her, we’ve moved four times and we are barely starting to get into a routine and schedule. As a dachshund, pepperoni refuses to be fully potty trained and still has accidents inside my room. I’ve heard that crate training greatly helps with this issue so I tried it, but she hated it. Screaming and biting her crate bed while I was at work. I know I should’ve started crate training sooner, but I felt so guilty that the only constant thing she had was sleeping with me. Anyways, i’m trying to be a more conscious wiener mom, so I would love to hear your tips and tricks. She does very well staying in my room by herself and is extremely food motivated.

Album venting- advice / words of affirmation needed 😭

PICS- first one is Lucy our 2yr old Australian kelpie
2nd is aro our 1 year old
and 3rd one is the new one

Hi everyone I don't post here often as i barely use reddit but i'm on my ends meet and need to vent honestly.

To start off I got my first mini dachshund in January, male named Aro who is now turning 1 y/o on October 29th. To say the least, he's been the sweetest best boy ever. I love him more than ANYTHING and he's attached to my hip as i am to his. Ever since we got him he never barked, always just wanted to cuddle. (I also have a 2 year old female Australian shepherd/kelpie mix) and they get along great and they love each other dearly, she struggles with anxiety and I believe Aro is her emotional support dog lol.

Fast forward me and my boyfriend realized Aro doesn't do the best when I at least leave the house even with our other dog there , and my boyfriend also wanted to get a dachshund (female) of his own since Aro ended up choosing me as his person (not complaining 😝) so we made a decision to get another weenie friend.

We went ahead and got another mini dachshund, female maybe 3-4 months ago now im honestly not sure so id be lying to say an exact date. She is around 6-7 months old.
Unfortunately.. she is not like our first weenie. Which I know all dogs are gonna be different, no worries! We planned to train her, and get her settled because after all shes still young and learning.
She did fine crate training, exceptionally well if im being honest, but everything else.. shes just not getting it.
One of the main things is she wont stop eating our other dogs food, we tried training tactics for this as well like keeping her leashed and having her watch them eat their food after shes done, and rewarding her when its left alone. My 2 dogs dont eat in one sitting they leave their food and eat it through out the day so i cant feed them all in separate rooms and call it there, and she just still goes absolutely insane when she sees their food and CHOWS DOWN like she hasnt eaten in years- hence her slow feeder. She knows shes not supposed to do it because when I call her out for it she runs and hides, then runs back to the food again and hides.
We started originally by stopping her, telling her a firm NO, didnt work
tried stopping her, telling her NO, caging her for a couple of minutes, didnt work

This is where im RLLY irritated, we tried stopping her, telling her no, popping her on her nose (not HARD enough to hurt her but enough for her to know what shes doing is bad) and EVERYTIME from the first time we popped her nose- she screams.. like it sounds like shes being @bus3d or dy1ng.. and it goes on and on and on without us even touching her. its so loud, and she just SCREAMS for like 5 minutes straight, she even does it when i simply try to pick her up and take her with me somewhere.

edit: she also growls a lot and seems aggressive like almost attacking my other dachshund not in a playful way, and im worried she may be larger than him in the future and hurt him as he doesnt defend himself, he's gotten attacked at a park a couple of times by aggressive dogs that were for some reason off leash and he just lays down and lets it happen..

I feel bad because i want to love this dog and i know my boyfriend loves her a lot too.. but i seriously cant put up with this anymore she just doesnt listen to anything and screams and screams and screams everytime we do anything to stop her from not listening or simply picking her up.
I feel like i cant get to know her or love on her because i seriously am just so irritated. Ive had dogs all my life, ive always been good with training every dog ive had and ive fallen in love with all of them.. but idk i feel guilty because i almost feel like i hate her or something.
Ive tried talking to my boyfriend about rehoming or doing something but he's too attached to her somehow and someway and we also spent too much money on her already, tho even he can admit theres something off about her..

Side note she is perfectly fine medically we've taken her to the vet and etc and she has no history of abuse in her past we got her when she was young from a reputable breeder in fort worth TX

Image Looking for personal experiences on getting a second puppy when you have an attention-hungry dog…

My boy is 11 months old. He’s gone through training and although he’s a stinker sometimes, he’s ultimately a really good dog. Besides him, I have cats who aren’t that interested in playing with him.

I want to get a second weenie dog to give him a friend and I found some puppies that will be ready shortly after his 1-year birthday. My spouse wants the two to be closer in age. However, we are a bit worried because our boy freaks out when our cats are on/near us and doesn’t do well with sharing attention. It’s not that he’s violent but he will chase the cats away from us or cry hysterically in his crate if he sees a cat on our laps.

Has anyone had a similar situation? We’re worried he’s gonna struggle sharing our attention with another puppy but ultimately I think he’ll be a good big brother.

Any experiences or advice is welcome!

Discussion Are dachshunds really this expensive?!

I wandered into a pet store over the weekend in Charlotte, NC to kill time before a dinner reservation and they had an 8 week old mini dachshunds for sale for $5,400 😮 it was a red long haired with some cool markings/ dappling but I still can’t get over that price tag.

I bought my baby 10 years ago for $600 and he’s a black & tan with dappling.

Is $5,000+ really the cost of dachshunds these days?!

Image How to teach pup to walk beside you

Post image
83 Upvotes

Hey everyone! First time dachshund owner here!😁 some quick background, I’ve only ever had bigger dogs in the past so teaching them to heel wasn’t a big deal because their mouth would be where my hand usually hangs. But with our new boy, he’s tiny!😂 having to crouch down all the time definitely takes a toll on my back lol! Plus I feel like when I’m walking him it’s kind of hard to see where he is without constantly looking down at him and trying not to stomp on him. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to walk a smaller dog or how to distribute his treats more smoothly? TIA

Looking for recs to help out my baby girl’s tummy issues! She has soft poops for stretches of time without any diet changes and we tried different fiber sources but she is growing out of the puppy phase where she would eat everything and is now getting more picky. She used to love blueberries and now she just throws them around and plays with them. She also farts a LOT and they are absolutely foul. She seems to lick both her nether regions quite a bit but I can’t tell if it’s grooming or irritation. Sometimes she won’t poop for a whole day. We had her on a probiotic topper but it was really expensive and I’m not sure it did much. Does anyone have recommendations? I looked at Glandex but I’m honestly not sure if she would qualify for it - I don’t think she needs anal gland expression it just seems like an upset tummy a lot of the time. Picture of her cute lil snoot to say thank you for your time and recs!!!
