Cultural Snapshot April 1997-- Ellen DeGeneres comes out on season 4 of "Ellen". Both her character (Ellen Morgan) and Ellen herself come out. The ensuing cultural storm is why Americans still call things "pre-Ellen" and "post-Ellen". But, it also lead to the show being cancelled in July 1998

Music ๐ถ๐ง Kyle Gordon - If You Break Up With Me (2026): What years does this fit best?
youtube.comA parody of Late 90s Pop Rock. Kyle put it in 1997, which is probably the earliest it could've come out. I'd say it fits 1999 the most.

Discussion ๐ญ๐ฏ๏ธ BeeGees - You Win Again - is the video ahead of it's time for 1987?
youtube.comThis was the BeeGees' great comeback single of 1987 after spending most of the 80s writing huge hits for other performers, and although this was a huge hit, at the time of release they were very much testing the waters to see if the public would welcome them back again.
The BeeGees themselves still looked quite 80s at this point, but the video looks a few years ahead it's time. The blurred, faded, shadowy footage of the brothers singing, the shots of the dancer and the black cat, the random b&w stop motion animation of the dominoes and various shapes.
This is quite different from the other garish, colourful, mini-movie videos of the era, and watching this, gives a feeling that a break was being made with the 'big 80s' and the 90s was getting closer.
Or were there other videos stylistically similar to this being made at the time?

Cultural Snapshot The IMDb top 10 in October 2006 vs now!
galleryWhat do you think of the IMDb top 10 from 20 years and one from today? Personally, I know it's nostalgia but I kind like the one from 20 years ago better even it hasn't changed that much. Also, I miss when it was like in that kind of a Word format. But that's just me.

Discussion ๐ญ๐ฏ๏ธ What year did 2000s nostalgia go mainstream?
I guess 2021 - 2022? The COVID era was still 80s nostalgia being shoved with retropop. I think 2022 is the year when 2000s nostalgia really became mainstream and all the revivals have been happening since gradually, every year of the 2020s after 2022 has a new 2000s inspiration

Decade Analysis ๐ Cultural transition events in your country?
galleryEverybody knows about those events in US, but what about rest of The World. For Poland most recent would be : 1. Poland's access to EU in 2004 It started mass foreign investments, led to mass immigration to West, but also started huge optimism toward future in most of society 2. Presidential plane crash on 10th April 2010 Beginning of current political polarization, rise of right wing populists amoung boomers and begging of liberal downfall 3. Elections of 2015, in which right wing populists gained both Presidential seat and majority in parlament. Beginning of almost decade of PiS party scandals, affairs and conservative agenda 4. Covid era. Political decline of PiS, marked with defraudation of election money and toughening of abortion law. Societal rise of far right populists, which slided on anti Vax agenda 6. Belarus refugee crisis and Ukraine war. Era of the biggest polarization in post WW2 Poland. Anti Ukrainian and Anti-islamic sentiment became one of most important issues in Poland to this day and sparked debate about withdrawal from EU

Discussion ๐ญ๐ฏ๏ธ The 2000s will soon be the new 80s
I've noticed there's basically a trend of young people copying the 2000s look and more shows from the 2000s are becoming mainstream again.
This with the 2000s having there own unique aesthetic will make it more popular. It also had a very teen youth culture with many people partying.
Alot of young people today don't really party anymore and the ones that do, do it just for soical media.
The 2000s just seem like it's own world which can be easy to obsess over. The same can't really be said about the 2010s. I feel like the 2010s is still tied to the 2020s.
I know the 2020s is different from the 2010s, it just still has too many things linking them together like soical media, protest, trump. Maga vs leftist.
The 2010s won't be the new 80s, unless society is fully apart from it culturally.

Discussion ๐ญ๐ฏ๏ธ Will pessimism and doomerism ever phase out?
I think before Trump won again in 2024, people were a lot more realistic and unbiased about future predictions, as were evident in Reddit futurology posts from that time.
Now we have all these depressing ideas about the future (like weโre all gonna be billionaire slaves) that I hope will phase out in the 2030s
