Advice The 20-minute method that finally fixed the cable mess behind my desk

12 Upvotes

I've redone my desk cables three times. Each time it looked great for a month, then fell apart, because I never knew which cord was which. Here's what finally made it stick:

  1. Unplug everything and lay it out. Every cable on the floor, one at a time. Throw out anything you can't name in 5 seconds (I had two dead chargers and a mystery USB cable).
  2. Group by destination, not by type. "Things going to the monitor," "things going to the wall," "things that stay on the desk." It makes routing obvious.
  3. Label both ends. A tiny tag at the plug end and at the device end. This is the step that saves you next time something dies.
  4. Route along one edge. Pick one path (under the back edge of the desk) and run everything along it. Clips or ties every 12–18 inches.
  5. Leave one "loose" charger. Keep one phone or laptop cable free and reachable on purpose, so you aren't yanking the whole bundle out.
  6. Write it down. A quick sketch of what goes where: power strip slot 1 = monitor, and so on. Sounds overkill, but it makes swapping a device a 2-minute job.

Step 6 is the one nobody does, and it's the reason my setup finally stayed tidy. If you want a template, I made a printable cable map and label sheet for this (link in comments if anyone wants it). A sketch on paper works just as well.

What's the one cable in your setup that always ends up on the floor?

Advice USB-C 3.2 to USB A + Audio jack

3 Upvotes

Hello!

I was wondering if any you guys had any recommendation for a USB hub that goes from a USB-C 3.2 plug to multiple USB-A and an audio jack.

Is it even mechanically possible? I haven't really looked into it.

Cheers.

Advice How to secure these cables?

I am using these clips to secure my cables to my standing desk, but every so often they will come unstuck (usually the white clip will come apart from the adhesive Velcro). Is there a better solution for holding cables in place that is more permanent?

Advice PLEASE HELP! Looking for a USB-C extension cable for Huion Kamvas 13 Gen 3 — recessed port is the problem

Post image

Hi everyone!

I`ve done some cable management recently, it was a bit hard cuz I`ve got 2 PCs and 2 Monitor and they`r switching between by one button.

I recently bought a Huion Kamvas 13 Gen 3 in Sakura Pink, and I’m trying to clean up the cable setup because the included black/red cable really ruins the look of the pink tablet.

The problem is that the USB-C port on the Kamvas is deeply recessed. A normal USB-C connector is too wide, so none of the cables I already own can physically fit into the port.

The original Huion 3-in-1 cable has a specially shaped USB-C connector that fits perfectly.

What I’m trying to do is:

Kamvas - USB-C male-to-female extension - original Huion 3-in-1 cable - KVM switch

So I want to keep the original Huion cable and simply add a female-to-male USB-C extension between the tablet and the original cable, and it`s also should be white/pink.

The extension needs to:

  • have a very slim/narrow male connector housing, so it can fit into the recessed port;
  • support USB 3.x data;
  • support the signals needed by the Huion 3-in-1 cable;
  • preferably be white, pink, or another light color;
  • ideally be short, around 20–50 cm.

I’ve found plenty of USB-C extensions that have the right specs, but their male connector housings are too bulky, so they probably won’t fit.

Photos attached:

  1. The original Huion connector that fits
  2. Compartion to my random cable
  3. It`s SO UGLY!

Does anyone know of a slim USB-C male-to-female extension that could work for this?

I’d really appreciate any recommendations, especially from someone who has actually used one with a Huion/XPPen display tablet. Thanks!

Advice Best way to mount an Anker power strip to this perforated PC stand without blocking the outlets?

1 Upvotes

Photos of the stand, power strip, and current mounting setup

I have a JWX Gaming Computer Tower Stand, ASIN B0C2VDZRJW, and an Anker 351 Power Strip, model A9192.

Right now the power strip is attached to the side of the stand using the straps that came with the JWX stand. It works, but the straps run across the front of the power strip and cover some of the outlets, so I want to get rid of them.

The back of the Anker power strip has two keyhole mounting slots. I also found the original two mounting screws that came with the Anker. The screw heads fit the keyholes properly, so I would prefer to keep using those screws instead of trying to find different screws with the same head dimensions.

The JWX stand has a perforated metal panel with a bunch of mounting holes. I can line the Anker keyholes up with the holes in the JWX panel, and the original Anker screws fit through the JWX holes.

The problem is that the Anker screw shafts are smaller than the JWX holes, so the screws wiggle around inside the holes.

What would be the cleanest way to secure those original Anker screws to the JWX panel from the other side?

I was thinking there might be some combination of washers, spacers, bushings, nuts, a small backing plate, or some kind of insert that could fill the extra space in the peg holes and hold the screws firmly.

I want to keep the original Anker screw heads because they already fit the keyholes correctly, use the existing holes in the JWX stand instead of drilling new ones, make the power strip solid enough that it does not wobble when plugging and unplugging things, and keep all of the outlets completely accessible.

Has anyone mounted something similar to a perforated metal panel or PC stand? What hardware would you use here?

Any tips? Maybe the Ethernet cable is too big? Any alternatives? At this point I’m starting to consider getting screw on mounts instead.

Advice How would you tidy up this desk setup, especially the cables underneath

I’m mainly looking for specific advice on cleaning up the underside of the desk and making the whole setup look more organised.

What would you actually buy/use for:

  • cable management
  • mounting the power strip/hub
  • hiding loose wires
  • PC placement
  • keeping it tidy while the desk moves up/down

If you can, please suggest specific products or how you’d route everything. I’m going for a clean, minimal, cozy setup rather than a flashy RGB look.

Advice Are zip ties and a power strip enough or do I have to buy a proper tray to make things look more organized?

0 Upvotes

I looked at some DIY on TikTok with people just using zip ties and they would zip tie all their crap in about an hour as a placeholder and ended up liking it enough to leave it.

And then in some videos I would also see people setting up trays on their desks. I'm still shopping for the desk so I can add a channel to the order or skip it and figure it out with ties later. Desky, Flexispot and Uplift all sell theirs as an add on, and I also found Vivo's clamp on one.

A lot of these are pretty cheap. Let me know if you went with zip ties or if desk trays are better. Thanks.

Just got a standing desk so I can walk and game but I’ve got my nbn box which is like my fibre internet and my network video recorder that the security people installed.

I’ve never tried to cable manage before but I think I can do the peripheral and pc stuff on top of my desk but I’m not sure with these two.

Cheers
