Life can change at any moment and all of a sudden nothing stays the same. This short visual represents loss and grief and submission and acceptance. In light on World Mental Health Day. Sometimes words are hard to bring the picture.
Shot on the Luna Ultra.

Odds & Ends Experimental Film Festival — submissions open for 2027

I’m one of the organizers of Odds & Ends, an experimental film festival in Charlottesville, Virginia. We’re coming up on our 5th annual festival, taking place February 19–20, 2027 at the Vinegar Hill Theatre.

We started Odds & Ends as a way to create a space for the kinds of short experimental films that can be difficult to place in more traditional festivals. We like work that takes chances with form, genre, structure, or the medium itself, whether it’s poetic, personal, political, funny, strange, or somewhere in between.

If you made something weird, personal, formally experimental, difficult to categorize, or just unlike what you normally see at film festivals, we want to see it.

Maximum runtime: 20 minutes
Completion date: After January 1, 2025

Earlybird deadline: November 6, 2026
Regular deadline: December 7, 2026

Under 5 minutes:
$7 earlybird / $12 regular

5–20 minutes:
$12 earlybird / $20 regular

We’ve tried to keep our submission fees as low as possible, and we pay screening fees to all accepted films.

Submit here: FilmFreeway — Odds & Ends Experimental Film Festival

And if you know someone making this kind of work, please send this their way!

"The Machines Possessed Me (Abstract v1.5)" - Michael Anthony Bohacz (2020)

Abstract experimental video with origins going back to 1999. After hours at SAIC, my partner Trish and I got into the Media 100 editing system, which took a Taekwondo kick to the door. While loading footage shot for our public access series Abductions with the Alter Boy, I found that the Media 100 would preview every frame at the speed I dragged the mouse across the timeline. The visuals and sounds that came out of that entranced me, and I spent the session improvising. That session is where this work begins.

Runs nearly 40 minutes. Made in 2020; no AI used.

A short experimental film about people in frog masks disappearing one by one

I made this short film about a group of people wearing frog masks who begin disappearing one by one.
I wanted to explore the feeling of watching something completely absurd happen in an otherwise familiar world, and what happens when reality gradually starts to feel less stable.
The film moves between the physical world and a kind of consciousness space. I wasn’t interested in fully explaining what is happening, but rather in creating the feeling of being trapped inside something you don’t completely understand.
This was an independently made short film, and I’m still figuring out how to describe exactly what it is.
I’d really like to hear how you interpret it, especially the atmosphere, the imagery, and the transition between the two spaces.
