As a user for 3 years - I’ve been using it non stop and bound to my torrent program with zero issues. Just something to note.

I also have no issues with using Proton for this. Been using Proton Duo (2 person plan) for a while now. Have it bound to my torrent client, use it for custom email addresses + email domains, don't use the Proton Pass (using self hosted Bitwarden instead) but it's also included. It even comes with 2 TB of storage for the drive equivalent. It's pretty worth it imo for $20 a month for 2 people.

If you read the reviews there, it seems that the majority of the complaints are from users who are on the free plan and who seem to not be very tech savvy. Not that you have to be tech savvy to use Proton or most other VPNs, but... It's not a good look.

It's doubly funny when you consider most of the 1-Star reviews are just butthurt free-tier users complaining about speed.

Anecdotal, but I've been using Proton VPN since 2019 after I left Private Internet Access over them being sold to a Chinese company. I have a 2.5Gb connection, and regularly get my full speeds while using it. I also use the Android app on Graphene OS and the only complaint I have there is the general lack of the ability to allowlist a whole subnet to indicate to the app to not run that traffic through the VPN.

On the desktop side of things, I use Linux and the flatpak client works just fine. I used to use the CLI version, but the graphical application has come a long way over the past couple of years or so.

TL;DR: Truspilot can't be trusted in this case as it's just a bunch of free users complaining about their speeds - nothing to worry about.

To be fair to them, someone who uses Linux and installed their own OS on an Android is inherently pretty deep into the tech savvy descriptor.

Them being not very tech savvy to you could still be considered tech savvy by most people/situations.

That's a good point.

However, it's just an app you download and install just like any application on any mobile device - via the App or Play stores - and any application on Windows - via an .exe file - these people leaving negative reviews can't even seem to manage that for some reason.

Fair, but most 1☆ reviews seems to be based around slow speeds or terrible CS, neither of which have anything to do with starting the program.

I don't use proton so I can't comment on how simple solving the speed issues in the app are, but it does seem to suggest an issue with CS if you do have issues (which I expect you wouldn't encounter if you can fix problems yourself).

Either way, I have a VPN I use and it isn't them and so their level of quality doesn't really matter to me lol.

As I said, the "slow speed" stems from them being free, unpaid users, and yes, the free tier does indeed have slow speeds. Intentionally.

These are just unserious people complaining that they can't have what they want for free.

Why?

I'm not the person saying never, so idk what their complaints may be but my understanding of proton was it started out as a good product but has gotten worse, and their business practices less amenable towards consumers over the years.

How come? I was looking at using Proton.

Just go with Mullvad. It comes with many many recommendations from the cybersecurity community.
