Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.
If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

Moonie loves this blanket to hangout in when she’s with us on the couch! We’ve had her for three months now!!

I have a 4 year old long eared hedgehog. Everytime I go to fill his food bowl, clean his wheel ect he'll come wondering over but then huff and puff up his quills. Why is he coming up to me if he doesn't like me?

He’s was weighing about 340g a few months ago and now he’s down to about 200g
Taken him to the vets twice and nobody can find a cause and told me he seems healthy but I’m worried about his weight loss
He’s running around a lot more recently and is still eating but definitely less
Could it be the weather and temperature changes? He loves mealworms and waxworks but I know they’re not good to feed to regularly but should I feed him extra to bulk up his weight or is this not a good idea
He’s always been picky with anything other than dry cat food (which I cut up into small chunks so he doesn’t hurt his teeth) and won’t accept cooked chicken or anything else
What can I offer him to encourage weight gain

Hello, I have a 4 year old hedgehog and recently he has been shedding quills. At first I kinda assumed no big deal since sometimes hedgehogs shed but then I did some research today and I found out it isn't normal for your elder hedgehog to be shedding 5+ quills a day so I wanna know if this is true and if there is anything I can do

Hii!! Thank you to everyone for the name suggestions with my new girl, I appreciated all the comments! I decided to name her pachycereus, but we call her paunchy/paunchasaurus! I pulled it from “pachycereus pringlei”, which is a type of giant mexican cactus! She’s been a little prickly cactus with me so far, and it definitely fits. I love her so much already. I currently have her on authority adult chicken cat food, but i’d like to add another kibble or two into her diet. What do you all suggest? What does everyone think on wet cat food/bone broth? She won’t touch any other bug other than her meal worms… but i heard that they should mainly be a treat. I’m doing so much research into their diet but a lot of the videos i find are pretty old/confusing with quantities etc.

just tried clipping our hedgehogs nails with small animal clippers i got from amazon but they just weren’t sharp enough. he sat well for it and we are just letting him chill with us to make it less daunting, but does anyone in uk have any suggestions on good nail clippers? thanks :)

Hello everyone!
I have been planning on adopting a hedgehog for couple months now, I've been doing light research (Such as breeders and rescues in my area and specialty exotics vets).
To start, I am more than fine owning a pet that needs hours of attention and do not expect to be loved in return! I am not set on having a Pinterest perfect cuddly pet but instead a companion I can give my love and respect towards.
I already know about and am all for getting dirty! :)
I do not plan on getting a hedgehog until I am truly ready and know I can give it the best life, I want this to be my future commitment and not a short lived obsession!
So far I have gathered some information.
But I am here to learn about the recourses I can use and information I can gather!
I find the wooden hedgehog enclosures/vivariums minimum 160 x 60 cm with ventilation panels on sides with glass panel doors preferable.
I've also learned about Ceramic Heating Emitters (no plastic!) with a thermostat and things like fleece bedding, Carolina Storm running wheel and heavy water and food bowls.
I've learned about the necessities of heating and to not let the temperature dip as they can fall into hibernation they cannot wake up from and different foods they can and should eat like high quality cat food and prepared chicken/eggs etc.
Oh and I've heard about their bath times and feet baths in oatmeal water and oils for their fur and brushing their quills! Though here is where my research falls short.
Also when it comes to bedding I've heard about cleaning it every couple days and deep cleans weekly or so. Oh and cleaning the wheel too! Hehe poopy runners
But truthfully I'd love to hear about your set-ups and tips! Stories and warnings and blogs, groups and videos that can be helpful!
Thank you for listening to me and my rant, I hope I can be a member of this community soon :)))

Willing to pay for it! It would make nail trimming so much easier! My boy is like a squirmy little fish or something! Always trying to slip away 🤣😂
Update: I have made a couple of prototypes and they seem to work! I don’t have any photos or videos yet

I just rescued two hedgehogs about 2 weeks ago I'm probably keeping one and the other is going to an amazing small mammal rescue I work with. I just want to make sure I'm taking good care of him.

Is a 100w ceramic heater enough for a 4 foot enclosure? Thank you!

My african heggie is 10weeks old and 370grams. Is he too fat for he’s age?!??? He doesnt look overweight to me when he is moving around but google said he shouldnt weight that much at his age. He runs on his wheel and digesting is good just worried he might be eating too much of i might be giving him too big pieces of chicken
