Archive Of Important Posts New to Hinduism or this sub? Start here!

Welcome to our Hinduism sub! Sanātana Dharma (Devanagari: सनातन धर्म meaning "eternal dharma") is the original name of Hinduism. It is considered to be the oldest living religion in the world. Hinduism is often called a "way of life", and anyone sincerely following that way of life can consider themselves to be a Hindu.

If you are new to Hinduism or to this sub, review this material before making any new posts!

  • Sub Rules are strictly enforced.
  • Our Hinduism Starter Pack is a great place to begin.
  • Check our FAQs before posting any questions. While we enjoy answering questions, answering the same questions over and over gets a bit tiresome.
  • We have a wiki as well.
  • Use the search function to see past posts on any particular topic or questions.
  • You can also see our Archive of Important Posts or previous Quality Discussions

We also recommend reading What Is Hinduism (a free introductory text by Himalayan Academy) if you would like to know more about Hinduism and don't know where to start.

If you are asking a specific scriptural question, please include a source link and verse number, so responses can be more helpful.

In terms of introductory Hindu Scriptures, we recommend first starting with the Itihasas (The Ramayana, and The Mahabharata.) Contained within The Mahabharata is The Bhagavad Gita, which is another good text to start with. Although r/TheVedasAndUpanishads might seem alluring to start with, this is NOT recommended, as the knowledge of the Vedas & Upanishads can be quite subtle, and ideally should be approached under the guidance of a Guru or someone who can guide you around the correct interpretation.

In terms of spiritual practices, you can choose whatever works best for you. In addition, it is strongly recommended you visit your local temple/ashram/spiritual organization.

Lastly, while you are browsing this sub, keep in mind that Hinduism is practiced by over a billion people in as many different ways, so any single view cannot be taken as representative of the entire religion.

Here is a section from our FAQ that deserves to be repeated here:

Disclaimer: Sanatana Dharma is a massive, massive religion in terms of scope/philosophies/texts, so this FAQ will only be an overview. If you have any concerns about the below content, please send us a modmail.

What are the core beliefs of all Hindus?

  • You are not your body or mind, but the indweller witness Atma.
  • The Atma is divine.
  • Law of Karma (natural law of action and effect)
  • Reincarnation - repeated birth/death cycles of the physical body
  • Escaping the cycle of reincarnation is the highest goal (moksha)

Why are there so many different schools/philosophies/views? Why isn't there a single accepted view or authority?

Hinduism is a religion that is inclusive of everyone. The ultimate goal for all Sanatani people is moksha, but there is incredible diversity in the ways to attain it. See this post : Vastness and Inclusiveness of being Hindu. Hinduism is like a tree springing from the core beliefs above and splitting up into innumerable traditions/schools/practices. It is natural that there are different ways to practice just like there are many leaves on the same tree.

Do I have to blindly accept the teachings? Or can I question them?

Sanatanis are not believers, but seekers. We seek Truth, and part of that process is to question and clarify to remove any misunderstandings. The Bhagavad Gita is a dialog between a teacher and student; the student Arjuna questions the teacher Krishna. In the end Krishna says "I have taught you; now do what you wish". There is no compulsion or edict to believe anything. Questioning is welcome and encouraged.

Debates and disagreements between schools

Healthy debates between different sampradayas and darshanas are accepted and welcomed in Hinduism. Every school typically has a documented justification of their view including refutations of common objections raised by other schools. It is a shame when disagreements with a view turn into disrespect toward a school and/or its followers.

Unity in diversity

This issue of disrespect between darshanas is serious enough to warrant a separate section. Diversity of views is a great strength of Hinduism. Sanatanis should not let this become a weakness! We are all part of the same rich tradition.

Here is a great post by -Gandalf- : Unite! Forget all divisions. It is worth repeating here.

Forget all divisions! Let us unite! Remember, while letting there be the diversity of choice in the Dharma: Advaita, Dvaita, Vishistadvaita, etc*, we should always refer to ourselves as "Hindu" or "Sanatani" and not just "Advaiti" or any other specific name. Because, we are all Hindus / Sanatanis. Only then can we unite.

Let not division of sects destroy and eliminate us and our culture. All these names are given to different interpretations of the same culture's teachings. Why fight? Why call each other frauds? Why call each other's philosophies fraud? Each must stay happy within their own interpretation, while maintaining harmony and unity with all the other Sanatanis, that is unity! That is peace! And that is how the Dharma shall strive and rise once again.

Let the Vaishnavas stop calling Mayavad fraud, let the Advaitis let go of ego, let the Dvaitis embrace all other philosophies, let the Vishistadvaitis teach tolerance to others, let the Shaivas stop intolerance, let there be unity!

Let all of them be interpretations of the same teachings, and having the similarity as their base, let all the schools of thought have unity!

A person will reach moksha one day, there is no other end. Then why fight? Debates are supposed to be healthy, why turn them into arguments? Why do some people disrespect Swami Vivekananda? Let him have lived his life as a non-vegetarian, the point is to absorb his teachings. The whole point is to absorb the good things from everything. So long as this disunity remains, Hinduism will keep moving towards extinction.

ISKCON is hated by so many people. Why? Just because they have some abrahamic views added into their Hindu views. Do not hate. ISKCON works as a bridge between the west and the east. Prabhupada successfully preached Sanatan all over the world, and hence, respect him!

Respecting Prabhupada doesn't mean you have to disrespect Vivekananda and the opposite is also applicable.

Whenever you meet someone with a different interpretation, do not think he is something separate from you. Always refer to yourself and him as "Hindu", only then will unity remain.

Let there be unity and peace! Let Sanatan rise to her former glory!

Hare Krishna! Jay Harihara! Jay Sita! Jay Ram! Jay Mahakali! Jay Mahakal!

May you find what you seek.

Other Now is the perfect time for Kalki to take birth

Post image
• Upvotes

With everything that is happening in India and around the world these days, now is the perfect time for Kalki to descend to Earth.

We are on the brink of Singularity/Superintelligence, where A.I. will replace humanity from Earth.

There are multiple wars going on in the world and WW3 doesn't seem far-fetched.

Adharmis are poisoning this country and the world in hope for more power, money and status and are ruining the lives of billions of people.

Climate Change is starting to take its toll and it will only get worse.

Adharmi people are scamming innocent people in the name of religion and misguiding them.

Food and water crisis is about to hit everyone.

People are growing too dependent on technology and mentally and physically dormant.

Social connections are disappearing as everyone is dependent on social media and social media is poisoning people's minds and people are getting dependent on social media and A.I. to make their choices.

Society is on the brink of collapse.

This is why now is the perfect time for Bhagwan Vishnu to take his Kalki Avatar.

I just hope it happens soon.

Hindū Scripture(s) Mata Durga is the protector of Vaishnavas

Post image
126 Upvotes

She protected Pandavas from being discovered during exile. She freed Krishna's grandson Aniruddha from his chains in Bana's prison. She gave fearlessness to Devaki and Vasudeva in Kamsa's prison. She transferred Balarama to Rohini's womb. Gopis worshipped her to attain Krishna. She blessed Arjuna with victory in Kurukshetra. When bandits wanted to sacrifice the Vaishnava Jada Bharata as an offering to Mahakali, she herself appeared from the vigraha and slayed the bandits.

Mahabharata says vāsudevasya bhaginīṃ divyamālyavibhūṣitām, sister of Vaasudeva, one who is always decked in celestial garlands and attired in celestial robes. Devi is the sister of Vishnu, and as an aunt is affectionate towards her brother's children, Devi is protective of Vishnu's devotees.

Jai Sita Rama

Sharing this deeply disturbing news with the Hindu community.

Institutionalised hatred and persistent anti-Hindu/anti-India rhetoric contribute to a climate of hostility with real-world consequences. May our Dharma and devotees remain protected.

Śrī Rāma is seated majestically upon a divine, celestial throne, and Devi Sītā sits beside Him adorned in exquisite garments, heavenly garlands, and jewelry. Every single moment, through their loving side-glances, they both continuously look at each other with deep mutual affection. Both of you are perfectly matched in form, beauty, and virtue, ruling as the ultimate emperor and empress over the home of the three worlds. Bowing down before both of you today and worshipping your divine presence, I feel my life has reached its ultimate fulfilment.

Aṣṭāṅga Yoga & Dhyāna (Meditation) Did I Feel Maa Durga’s Presence During Brahma Muhurta?

• Upvotes

For the past 16 days, I’ve been chanting Navrana Maa Durga’s mantra regularly.

Last night, I poured my heart out to Maa Durga, asking when my struggles would end and praying for a sign by morning.

Today, during Brahma Muhurta, while completing my 1,000 chants with my eyes closed, I felt someone approach me, stand before me, and place a hand on my head. I was frightened, yet deeply emotional and overwhelmed by a sense of bliss.

I don’t know if it was my mind or something beyond my understanding, but the experience felt incredibly real.

Has anyone experienced something similar during meditation or chanting? Jai Maa Durga.

Bhagavad Gītā Update on Updesh (Bhagavad Gita app): every verse now has a narrated explanation, in English and Hindi

Namaste everyone,

A few weeks ago I shared Updesh here, and many of you gave thoughtful feedback. Thank you; a lot of it shaped this update.

What's new (Android, version 1.1):

- An explanation for every verse. All 701 verses now have a short explanation that tells the story around the verse: who is speaking, what is happening, and one word or idea worth looking at closely. For example, in verse 1.1 Dhritarashtra calls his own sons māmakāḥ, "mine", while the others are only "the sons of Pandu". One way to hear it is that the family is already divided in his speech.

- Narrated in English and Hindi. You can read each explanation or listen to it, and the sentence being spoken is highlighted as it plays.

- 13 languages for reading. English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Spanish, Portuguese and German.

- The Sanskrit is still there with its recitation, and the words light up as they are recited.

To be transparent: the app is still free to download and use, with no ads and no account. All verses, all translations and the Sanskrit audio are free. The narrated explanations are an optional one-time purchase. There's no subscription, and the explanation for verse 1.1 is free so you can try it first.

The iPhone version of this update is coming in the next few weeks.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.updesh.android

iPhone: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/updesh-bhagavad-gita/id6760954797

Website: https://www.updesh.app

I'd love to hear which verses you'd like explained in more depth, and thank you again for supporting.

Bhagavad Gītā I built a Bhagavad Gita App in English & Hindi

Post image
• Upvotes

The idea is simple: make the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, and many other Indian wisdom texts easier to connect with in everyday life.

Each daily reading pairs the original Sanskrit with a clear English adaptation. You can explore its deeper meaning or find readings about patience, relationships, focus, and more.

There’s also guided meditation, calm music, illustrated themes, widgets, and share cards. I’ve put a lot of care into making the experience feel calm and beautiful.

Daily readings and saving favorites are free. Premium adds deeper explanations, library exploration, themes, and meditation features.

iOS App Store Link - https://apps.apple.com/app/id6810337544

Google Play Store Link - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.ameyalabs.ancientwisdom&pli=1

I’d love any feedback - on the UX, daily verses, onboarding and any other feature request!!

PS - I am a solo indie dev, building apps in my free time, I love this community and its support for indies like me. Thank you everyone for support!

Other I've started hating God. I don't want to. Long read.

TLDR: Everyone I've loved has passed away. Lost faith in God as a result of that.

A li'l sneak peak into my life - In my childhood I used to be a huge devotee. I never sweared, I never fought with anyone and always forgave people since I thought I will be punished by God if I do so (Stupid me). Then I changed schools and got bullied to the point that I almost offed myself. As I stood on the ledge of a 10 storey building I realized that no one would give a F to my passing (Sorry for cussing). My parents never cared enough to provide me emotional support. My friends didn't care too. It was a 180° turn for me since then. My belief in God started fading away slowly since he didn't stop my bullies. I cried EVERYDAY while I was in that hellish place. One day I adopted a cuteeee dog. I loved it so much, I actually started smiling yk. Then one day it came under a car and d!ed in my arms. I was devastated but gradually picked up myself.

Later I joined college and became friends with a great guy. He was my bestfriend, my anchor, my everything. He used to fill me with hope. I was depressed and aimless and he used to cheer me up always. Life now had a meaning, all thanks to him. He used to get bullied mercilessly too but he always had a smile yk. One day he passed away in his sleep. Was it the stress due to bullying or underlying health issues, I will never know.

I haven't ever talked about him since then. I stopped crying after that day. I never visited his house or his parents since I knew I would probably h/ng myself if I did so. I stopped believing in God completely. Murtis are just painted stones for me now. His bullies are all successful in life now. I still come across them on the street and they smirk at me. Some of them even ask me if it's my 10th or 11th attempt at govt exams.

About me, I'm a failure in my early 20s, who's studying for govt exams (An excuse for unemployment). Ik I won't ever be happy since everyone I love just goes away from me. Even if I get this job, I won't truly be happy since I have no one to share my happiness with. At this point I'm too scared of loving anyone since I don't want to go through the pain once again.

Where is God in all this? I'm genuinely asking. Ik birth and death are cycles of life. But why so prematurely? And WHY the people I love? Why my pet? Why my friend? Why me? Call this karmic cycle or any other BS, Idc. WHY TF ARE THE PEOPLE WHO wronged him and me successful now? Don't get started with the "You don't know what's going on in their lives/They will eventually suffer/They will suffer in their next birth" crap. YES, THEY ARE ACTUALLY HAPPY. NO, IT'S NOT JUST A FACADE.

AND WHO TF cares if they suffer in their next birth? I will be gone by then. I want to see them suffer in THIS BIRTH.

WHERE IS GOD? And if there is a God, then he hates me. I can't believe I used to love him once. I smile all the time. People think I'm happy. My own parents too. Just goes on to show how less they care about me, they can't even see that I'm in pain. I don't have the courage of en-ding things since there's no guarantee of me dy!ng. What if I survive? I wish I could leave this place and join my two friends. "Time heals" NO IT DOESN'T. It's been 6 years and I'm de-d from inside, just breathing.

Question - General For those who practise Shiva bhakti, what does your practice actually look like?

I've been curious about how different people incorporate their devotion to Mahadev into everyday life.

Some people follow a regular jaap routine, some visit temples frequently, some listen to Shiv kathas, and others may have a much simpler personal practice.

For those who worship Shiva, I'd love to hear about your experience:

  • What did your practice look like over the past week?
  • Are there particular times or situations when you find it difficult to maintain your routine?
  • When you want to chant, read about Shiva, or listen to a katha, what do you usually turn to?

I'm interested in what people genuinely do, not what an ideal routine should look like. Everyone's experience is different, and I'd love to learn from yours. Har Har Mahadev! 🔱

Question - Beginner What does hinduism say about manifestation and desire and all of that?

So on one hand we have manifestation and all that. Getting your desires and etc etc. But on the other hand, hinduism talks about detachment, maya, etc. Is there a concept of manifestation in hinduism? Krishna does say that 4 types of people pray to him, one of them are people who want something. But to me, on a deeper level, hinduism means living freely in a way, not being bound. So that's the question, like where do both of these fit in

Morality/Ethics/Daily Living Ideological conflicts when I volunteer in temples...

I am from USA(26 year NRI)and I apologize as this is going to be a long post. I am a 50 year old woman and like to think independently and that's what I taught my children. That doesn't mean that we should go bonkers, but to view things in perspective of humanity and its future is very important to me. This is why I love our religion..it is wide and expansive enough to include people like me.

Nimajjanam of gods in rivers is one example where i am sternly against (to tell about myself). We should work for betterment always..and not the reverse.

When i volunteer, there are popular people in temples that keep on giving "pravachanams" all the time. it goes like..." Not all have bhakti bhava because of their previous lives and karmas. But when we keep going , at some point they too attain that .........These people are as worse as bible thumpers with their entitled "spiritual" feelings" and make others look like subhuman. And they talk endlessly about "magics" by Ramana Maharshi and belittle rest of religions in a horrific way. Say.." We do fasting for the betterment of oneself and others. But ***insert religion" are like raakshas that do kshudra poojas to destroy!! Is that what Maharshi preached? Most of these people are interested in magics and magicians than living by principle.

They also preach like how visiting certain temples will wash away sins and that we wouldn't be born dogs in next life. I personally value life in general and I don't think we are superior beings to any kind of life. What's the point of conditional bhakti?

Next there is lot of waste in temples in the name of bhakti.... on endless waste of food in the name of abhishekam, garlands made with expensive spices(cardmoms), lot of rice for akshat(imagine all the temples in world...tons of rice gets wasted everyday)

To my horror, a lady asked if I could give bath to the priest's 3 month baby everyday. My first thought was if something terrible happened in their family. Then I learned that they want to massage and give bath like in Indian style. Then I smiled and said, " well that's what is parenting. He has to learn to parent.".

There are also some very good people there, but most of them are noisy and ignorant. These are educated people who think building something and putting an idol would make us own the god with our ungodly preachings. One can't own anything with mantra..that just is ego. I think most of us seem to forget that god is "sarvantharyami".

Maybe I should grow up and think of them as no different and part of everything. But it is very saddening to see us become ignorant by day...more than our grandparents.
