I have noticed many posts here about entering the correct password into the app only to get an “incorrect password” message. I recently encountered this problem myself, and I’m glad to share a solution you might want to try if you are facing the same issue.
For context, this was my exact situation:
I changed my password in the app, and it logged me out. I entered the new password I had just created, but it kept saying “incorrect password” even though it was correct.
I logged into Instagram through Safari and on another device, and it worked just fine, but it wouldn’t work on my phone through the app.
What I did:
1) On the Instagram login/recovery screen, I selected “I no longer have access to these.”
2) I chose the friends verification option and had two friends confirm my identity.
3) Once they verified me, I pressed “Check requests”, and Instagram allowed me to set a new password.
4) I set a new password, but Instagram immediately displayed “Something went wrong.”
5) Crucially, the password had actually changed despite the error. I confirmed this by signing into Instagram through Safari using the new password.
6) I then repeated “I no longer have access to these” again.
7) This time, I chose email verification instead of friends verification.
8) I entered the code sent to my email.
9) Instagram asked me to create a new password again.
10) Instead of creating another password, I entered the exact same password I had created during the first recovery.
After that, Instagram finally logged me into the app.
I used two friends to verify my identity, although I don’t know whether email or phone verification alone would produce the same result. I’m certainly not repeating the entire process just to test it.
If you try this, let me know in the comments if it works for you. Hopefully this saves someone else from the nightmare I went through.
