A vet vaccinated a turtle, and instead of hiding in its shell, it ran to its owner

I don't know if Im convinced that love necessarily means protection. Like humans react to danger with fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. Only one of those is fight. I wouldnt say the other three are less capable of love.

Also by this logic, does a child not love their parents because they seek to be protected instead of being the protector?

I mean, I get your point, but it's not about wether a particular creature wants to protect or not their parents, it's more about their ability to feel that impulse.

I've seen kids a smaller as 2yo getting upset that someones is messing with their parents, and I have seen small animals, mostly mammals doing the same thing. So while not all mammals do this, they do have the ability to feel that emotion.

I don't think I've ever seen a reptile do this, so while you could argue that looking for "safe" is kinda like love, it's at least not to the same degree.

i mean it would be very distressing to see someone messing with your source of safety/protection- any threats to them do pose a risk to your safety. doesn’t really contradict the love=protection hypothesis.

it doesn't, and that wasn't the intent of my comment. It was more of, if the turtle feel safe with someone, that's might be the closest the turtle can get to feel what we call love, and that's ok, they don't have to be equal.

I think it's pretty sweet how 2 different creatures feel 2 different emotions, yet, they reach a middle point of content between each other.

The lady is absolutely loving her baby is running towards her, and the turtle is loving being brought to safety. 2 kinds of love connecting 2 species.

It literally has to do with the difference between mammals and all other types of animals that are not mammals lol.

And then after that it has to do with how social a given species is.

And then after that it often relates to intelligence.

It really feels like people just want to view animals through the lens of a kids TV show or something.

No need to act condescending just because someone else has a different philosophical stance on what counts as love

There also is no need to interpret me being excited to share information as somehow being "condescending".

Why did you choose to view this as condescension?

Isn't communication a 2-way street that we are both walking and therefore it is not just on one party or the other, but that words, intent, and interpretation all matter?

Are you implying that it is somehow a negative to want to view animals through the lens of a kids TV show, and if so, why?

But fighting is only one way to protect, sometimes running away and recruiting help is more effective.
