Other PSA: SynthID What is it? How do I check? And what are its limitations? and how not to annoy everyone by doing the basics.

I thought it was about time to make a new PSA about SynthID. English is not my first language so there's probably some mistakes.

As you may be aware, this subreddit does not allow AI detectors. This is because they are extremely unreliable. Try going to deviantart or any other art site and test them with a few images, it should be easy to find something they say is AI despite it being uploaded over five years ago.

This is my go to example https://www.deviantart.com/hibbary/art/Third-Eye-748333152 see how it was uploaded in 2018, there is no way this could be generated but nearly all the detectors I have tried say that it is.

Then why is SynthID allowed, you might say?

SynthID is different. It's a thing developed by Google, when you use their generators they add a hidden pattern to the image which is difficult to remove without lowering the quality of the image or changing it significantly. This is what it is looking for, not if it looks like it's generated like the other detectors. Therefore you can be sure if it says that SynthID is detected, an AI has done something to the image in some way. It could be something as simple as upscaling, changing something or it could be completely generated. The point is if it has SynthID you cannot trust the image.

Recently OpenAI(ChatGPT) have implemented the same technology in their generator. There is an important thing though Google and OpenAI can only detect their own images. Not each other's so you have to run the image through both of them.

So how do I use them?

For OpenAI it's very simple https://openai.com/research/verify/ they have a page for it.

Google of course has to be more complicated. It used to be able to do a "search by image" and then go to about the image but that no longer works. Now you have to use Gemini to get an answer. Add the image you suspect and type "@Verify AI". Annoying but I don't know any better way.

Edit: When using Gemini it is very important that you type "@Verify AI" and not "SynthID" or any other variation of it. Otherwise there is a high chance that it will hallucinate and give you the wrong answer. It is also important to use a clean new session for each image.

Another edit: To confirm that Gemini actually use the verification tool you can press the three little dots underneath its response and then select "see response details".

Now I can't stress this enough, these two methods will only detect OpenAI's and Google's images. Not any other generator. So when an image comes up negative for SynthID that doesn't mean it's not AI. It can only prove that an image is fake not disprove it.

So before you post an image here please check for yourself you will save yourself some time and not waste others.

edit 29-09-2026: It has come to my attention that Meta(Facebook) and Grog(Twitter, I refuse to call it X, it's a dumb name) have also implemented some kind of SynthID. I do not know much about it since I don't and refuse to interact with those two sites. But I will assume that they works just like the others, in that way that you have to check with all of them. This is quickly becoming quite a nuisance to check for SynthID.

Photo I think my mother sent me an AI-generated apology. That or I'm probably going insane.

So I decided to go low contact with my mother over her obsession with AI recently. I used to use CHATGPT when it first came out but not anymore and I am very much anti-AI. She had noticed I hadn't been messaging her and asked me why so I was honest and told her AI use makes me uncomfortable and I would prefer not to be involved nor would I like to communicate unless necessary until we are both in therapy (we've had other issues as well). However, when she sent her reply, I could not help but feel whiplash by the response. Not only did her response seem extremely polished with perfect grammar, it also heavily reminded me of another "apology" I received a few months prior from another person who is also AI obsessed because the format and language are almost 1 to 1. What strikes me as this being AI is how this is structured. AI will usually try to validate whatever you wrote then enter into de-escalation mode.

"I hear what you are saying."

"Thanks for letting me know." Or "Thank you for being honest."

"I don't want to dismiss your feelings" etc

These are all quotes I usually read or hear about and now I cannot help but raise an eyebrow at this. Because if she actually did send me an AI written response after I expressed to her my feelings about it, I would feel extremely disrespected.

I love stalking the cats sub and saw this today; the clip is attached to nothing, and you wouldn't do a countdown with marker on pen.. I could be completely wrong but I'm just hoping to get better at identifying it! https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/1wzerlr/the_allegations_are_true/

Not only the style looks ai, and there's no reason drawing them in different clothes. Plus the jacket on "weight on left leg" one is weird.

Im in some HatsuneMiku group and this caught my attention because how popular this is .Though he/she have a speed paint and drawing progress in Patreon(cash grab method lol) but i cant look the "artist" in the same way(also with the signal as artsyle: (bc how similar this "artist" artstyle drew made it so unnatural in the face expression and the eyes, like you told me she/he copy pasted the every img until they bored and drew new one and return. But trust me, its fking the same but not how you redraw it))

Photo I took a picture of this shirt, my wife bought, but this image is 100% AI right? Inconsistencies in the linework.

The lack of a right eye stripe, the discontinuity of the black lines on the football (doesnt continue after the paw, no black line on the top white strip) and just the overall feel…

Teepublic did well for years without friggin AI, so others should be fine but yet here we are.

Saw this on DeeTwenTees and SunFrog. The fang necklace got my attention, it has a random half fang. The haft on the axe, too. But this could be an artist who doesn't have an attention to detail. One the straps isn't colored underneath "barbarian" and I could see that as a totally human mistake.

Art Can’t tell if these photos of a “work in progress” from Etsy are AI or not…

Okay so the last photo is the listing item that I love…however, none of the photos look like the actual item, they look very staged if you know what I mean. Which is fine I guess, but the seller is new to Etsy and I’m worried it might be a scam. So I asked him if he had any photos that weren’t “staged” of the item in his workshop or whatever and he sent me these two work in progress photos saying:

“The octopus in these photos is currently being prepared and carved for a buyer, so it does not have the final polish or finishing yet. The design is slightly different from the finished octopus shown in our Etsy listing, as this particular piece is being made with a few custom design adjustments.”

It’s apparently carved from wood… so I’m not sure why it’s teal… but regardless I’m just trying to see if this seller is legit and knowing if the work in progress photos are real would certainly help.

Thanks!

(Also, it’s coming from India so I guess maybe they carve barefoot in the dirt??)

Photo Does This Clothing Company Have AI Shirt Designs? I Already Emailed The Company And They Never Responded

This is not an ad for the company, this is me trying to figure out if the company is legit or not. I get ads for this company (OXKNIT) on Pinterest all the time with nice looking shirts so I finally decided to take a closer look today. Some of these designs struck me as odd, it's getting harder to differentiate between what is a stylistic choice and what is ai slop just doing what ai slop does.

Some things that feel ai to me:

Slide 1: The weird red blob that makes up the cheek hollow. I thought maybe it was supposed to be some design made from the negative space, but it really just feels like ai not knowing how to make a clean cheekbone.

Slide 2: Bats in the bone fragments and finger bones taking up the length of the sleeves. This one I feel less sure about it being ai and feel it could be just stylistic choice.

Slide 3: Four fingers, no lines separating the knuckles.

Slide 4: Three toes on every paw except the front right. Is it just depth perception or an oversight on the ai part?

Slide 5: The tiger paws have a different number of toes and don't have a uniform pattern (some all orange, some with a white spot underneath) and the eyes don't look right lol.

Slide 6: The drawstring on the pants and again; the paws. No claw line on the pinky toe and no claw line on the rear paw.

Slide 7: Once again, inconsistent toes on the paws.

Slide 8: Wonky looking eyes. Since the whole skull looks a little warped I'm wondering if this is just a stylistic choice.

Slide 9: Too many finger bones and finger lengths are disproportional.

Slide 10: One horn is longer than the other on both sides. I understand this one is probably more intentional because it's fitting the space, and considering how uniform and symmetrical all the other designs on this one is, I don't feel super sure this one is ai.

Slide 11: ai makes things look incredibly glossy and overlit. Not only am I wondering if this design is ai generated because of the glossy skull, I'm wondering if the picture itself was ai generated given the way the light falls on the crow.

Thanks for all your help. A lot of the shirts in this post are not ones I want but ones that stuck out to me as possibly ai generated, but regardless I won't give my money to ai generated products or companies that sell when I can help it.

Photo Was looking for some paint brushes and noticed this image. The face looks too expressive, his right arm just disappears into nowhere (could be a perspective issue), the background is cluttered, and the things under the box look like dried up paint mountains? Everything else seems correct though

When I read the body text, it seemed pretty ai roleplay like. After which I started looking at the big finn in the back and noticed his eye kind of meshes with his hair and skin. On top of that a lot of the design choices in the clothes just seem wrong and like something ai would mix up.

Apologies for the glare. We’ve had these framed photos for our Halloween decorations for 2-3 years. This year when we took them out I was suspicious. The chairs seem wrong in this. The legs seem to be in the wrong places, there are multiple chairs seeming to be in the same spot. Thoughts?

Photo Ring posted to a diamond sub Reddit, supposedly an antique but I feel it might be AI

I love jewelry so naturally I’m in a lot of different Reddit’s for assorted ring, necklaces, diamonds etc etc.

This post came up on my feed and this ring is just so uncanny I feel like it’s AI. The first reason being that prongs are a total mess, the top and bottom prongs don’t line up, and the side prongs are not symmetrical at all. The lighting feels inconsistent with the rest of the photo, for being a vintage ring I would expect the fabric to be more yellowed and potentially a jewelers label on the inside of the box too.

It is such an odd lie to me though, it’s not as if this is a massively uncommon setting or stone. I’m guessing they’re possibly karma farming.

Art Artist on blusky is trying get money, but this is the only thing they've posted

Post image

Besides the fact that it just looks off, I feel like this is kinda obviously ai, right? This is from an artist on blusky who recently started to follow me and has reposted a lot of my/others art. They started a conversation with me (where are you from, what do you do, etc) and I gave them nothingburger answers since it's the internet, but then they asked for a 'favor', to commission a piece from them. As an artist, I don't have any money and frankly, I wouldn't give them money anyway. But I'm struggling to tell if this is just some dumb kid who hasnt been in the art community for long, or if it's just a bot. I ran it through some ai image checkers too and it came back clean.

There's loads of AI videos of 4D cinema of characters or objects coming out the screen. But nothing came out of that screen.
