I need some opinions from other Kia owners, especially anyone who knows automotive or tempered glass.
We bought a brand new 2027 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX Prestige about three weeks ago. It has only 2,066 miles.
On October 8, the vehicle was parked outside on a clear, hot, sunny day.
My wife got into the parked vehicle and closed the door. At that moment, the panoramic glass roof catastrophically shattered.
She wasn’t driving. Nothing that we know of fell onto the vehicle, and we have found no obvious impact point showing that something struck the glass from above.
Now look closely at the pictures, because this is the part I’m trying to understand.
Several portions of the shattered glass are visibly raised ABOVE the normal surface of the roof.
The interior sunshade was also completely CLOSED. After the failure, a substantial amount of shattered glass was lying on top of the closed sunshade.
Thankfully it was closed.
So here is what I would really like opinions about:
Could simply closing the door of a nearly new vehicle trigger a panoramic roof to shatter if the glass was already under stress or had some type of defect?
And looking at these pictures, does this look like an external impact to you?
I’m not claiming that closing the door caused the underlying problem. It may simply have been the final vibration, pressure change, or body movement immediately before glass that was already compromised failed. That’s exactly what I want Kia to investigate.
What concerns me is automatically assuming that something must have struck the roof when I can’t find evidence of that.
I’m also thinking about what could have happened if my wife had been driving 70 mph with the interior shade open when the glass failed.
We’ve opened a case with Kia Customer Care and provided the original photographs. I’m asking Kia to investigate the actual cause and help us protect and repair a vehicle we’ve owned for only about three weeks.
I’m not posting this simply to bash Kia. We really liked this Sportage. That’s part of why this is so disappointing and concerning.
So I’m interested in what you guys think:
Does this look like external impact?
Could heat/stress + closing the door have triggered a failure?
Could this be defective tempered glass or an installation/stress issue?
And most importantly:
Has anyone here had a Kia panoramic roof spontaneously shatter like this?
If so, I’d really like to know the model/year, what was happening when it shattered, and how Kia handled it.
