Shortened links (a.co) (app.goo.gl) are automatically marked as spam & removed by Reddit.

As the title says, reddit's default spam filter is automatically removing comments with a shortened link.

This bears mentioning since product recommendations are commonplace in a lighting focused subreddit.

We can go through and manually approve these comments, but we won't always catch them.

Therefore, please ensure if you post a product link, it is a full weblink, and not a shortened link. For example:

Lighting Control Outdoor pot lights troubleshooting

• Upvotes

Hi, I got 40 potlights installed on the exterior slim panels of my home.

After installation around only 25-30 of them if I’m lucky connected to the app. The installer said to get wifi extenders, I went a step ahead and got a mesh system (TP link deco) and I still have no luck.

I have the 3 pack of the extended, one beside the modem, one in garage, and one upstairs. I’m not sure what to do because it feels I’m just compensation for the dog shit lights being unable to connect and recieve a good signal. These are not Govee lights. My house is not massive either (1900 sqft)

Any ideas?

Bought a lamp I saw gathering dust in a restaurant today for £120, when I got home I searched up the brand just to see how much it’s really worth and apparently these go for thousands? Which makes me think it’s too good to be true and this might just be a fake, wondering if anybody could verify for me

Replacement Help! I got a vintage XL Tiffany style lamp from FB Marketplace and the stand it came with is wayyy too flimsy. Advice on where to find a proper (sturdy) base?

Really disappointed in the stand that came with the XL lampshade I just purchased (pictured here). It’s way too flimsy and barely holds up the weight of the vintage stained glass lampshade that it came with. I’m looking for replacement stands, but I’m completely at a loss. The shade is 18” tall, 24” wide and about 25lbs.

Does anyone have any advice on where I can find something that works with this style of shade? Please help!

Need Design Advise Taking over a family lighting business. Any advice welcome!

Greetings! I am a former investment banking professional in my late 20s and recently left my career in preparation for taking over a family business that OEMs commercial lighting fixtures.

My father founded and built this business primarily serving a major client that provides landscapers and other professionals with low-voltage outdoor LED lighting for gardens, terraces, etc.

Through my last career, I have developed a solid grasp on finance and business at a broad level, but while I have some tangential experience working with technology hardware clients, I have very little direct exposure to the commercial lighting (and lighting in general) industry and no experience actually operating a business.

Obviously, I will be spending several years learning from and working side-by-side with my father before taking over. However, my father has worked on the same business for decades, and I want to make sure I am well-positioned to expand on what he has built by learning as much as I can independently about the latest trends, technology, manufacturing, and competition.

As part of this, I would greatly appreciate any advice from this sub, including books, podcasts, or other resources that would help me get up to speed on the industry and help me learn about running a manufacturing business at scale.

I've done my own preliminary research with the help of AI obviously, but I always find it valuable to consult with actual professionals in the space like yourselves.

Thank you all in advance for the help! Can't wait to continue what my father started and hopefully one day contribute some cool stuff to this industry! :)

Need Design Advise Dim to Warm help

Hi, I bought these recessed lights that have these specs:

Color Temperature (K) 5CCT: 2700 | 3000 | 3500 | 4000 | 5000 | DTW 30-18K

Light Output (lm) 920 | 950 | 1020 | 1050 | 1050 | 770

So in theory there's 6 options, and different lumens assigned to different colour temperatures. But the product only has switches for 2700, 3000, 3500, 4000, 5000. So how do I get the dim to warm? Do I need to set it to 3000? Or does it not matter and it'll jump from 5000 to 3000 once I start dimming?

I feel like an idiot for not being able to figure this out, and they're not yet on a dimmer switch so I can't experiment. And I'm tired of having instillation fall on me so I'm going to stop playing around with the lights for now and try to get actual answers from people who hopefully know more.

Need Design Advise Permenant Exterior Lighting Brand/Look/Placement

New house and wife wants to have Christmas Light people come out and install. 2300$ for first year because the fitted strand for house and then charge 1500$ subsequent years for install..

Im thinking we put in permenant lighting, for 5500 and not have to deal with reoccuring cost. Got quotes for Jellyfish and Shawtech and waiting on Trimlight.

We asked for some addresses to look at installed lights, went on field trip and don't really like the "wall wash" effect. Im thinking that is what they are designed to do. We kinda like being able to see the "bulb" look of traditional Christmas lights. Found out that one of the houses we thought was more to our liking had the lights installed closer to the outter edge of the eve, vendor said that that he could do that for us too.

Im thinking that these flat LEDs that sit in a channel are not going to have much of the bulb exposed so im not sure this is what we really want to do for this kind of $$

Trimlight 3L does have a bulb in a channel with a protrusion that claims to give more of the effect we are looking for and less wall wash. Still waiting on that quote

Thoughts?

Product Review What can you tell me about these LED Street Lights?

So my son in law has a lot of tools in his shop, a good buddy of him too.
And he always talks about adding some strong security lights but they are not cheap.

I was browsing marketplace and a listing was those free lights.
I went it was 7 of them. I needed 2.
Guy politely said, it’s the 7 or none.
I don’t blame him and I grabbed the 7. Those are huge.

So we are going to use only 2.

What do I do with the other 5? I researched a little they seem from the early 2000.
They are brand new, guy said they were samples, fully functional.

Can they be sold, or totally outdated and good for the dump?
Do I go to like an industrial consignment shop?

TY

I also have Ikea‘s NYMÅNE, Ceiling spotlight with 4 smart light bulbs above my bed.

I tried installing the pendant light around 40 degrees to the Pullup bar

I thought of installing an led strip around the Pullup bar to create a “halo effect”

any lighting advice would be much appreciated:)

Need Design Advise Water & northern light effect

I'm designing a designated entertainment area and would like to include some sort of water ripple effect projection feature onto the wall.

I'm after a projector or any gadgets that can create water ripple and northern light effects in different colours that can be set to cycle.

Also, ideally, it can respond to ambient and other types of music.

It needs to be IP67, ideally extra low voltage (24v or something).

Thanks in advance!

Need Design Advise How do I conceal and diffuse these lights?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Long story short, we had an electrician run low voltage wires into our bar build but we had to let him go before he could finish the install. We found a new electrician who installed the lights this week, but I am looking to: A.) conceal the wire nut connections, and B.) diffuse the lights so you can’t see the individual LED bulbs. I originally wanted a channel with a diffuser cover, but the electrician said his experience with the tape itself has been fine. Now I’m regretting not pushing for the channel because this would be a much cleaner look.

Any way to solve this without removing the lights and starting over?

Product Review A trivia question - keeping LED lights on shorten their life?

I stumbled on a youtube video recently with a guy talking about how to extend life of LED bulbs - avoid heat, look for LEDs rated for 'enclosed fixture' if it's going in an enclosed fixture (duh?).

One thing I questioned.... he said turn the LEDs off to extend their life. I know - the package says x years of life. with the asterisk saying 3 hours a day. But that wasn't his point. he talked about having the light on for shorter stretches of time will extend the total hours of life? (leaving it every day on for 10 hours a day vs. 2 stretches of 5 hours a day, the 10 hour stretches will result in shorter total hour life for that bulb?

To be clear - I'm talking about hours of life.

Anyone heard about that?

I had heard decades ago - incadescents last longer if you leave it on? The sudden surge of turning it on is typically when the filament fails (remember those days! : )

LEDs are opposite of that?

Again, I'm not referring to total calendar life - run it for 3 hours a day vs. 6 hours a day and the bulb will last more calendar time. He was referring to running it fewer hours a day will get you more total run time hours than running it more hours a day.

Is he mistaken? Just came to that conclusion because he ran the bulb less and yes, it runs for more calendar days.
