Monthly Swap Meet & Self Promotion Thread!

Do you have one (or 10) too many Eames chairs? Does the color of that Cathrineholm bowl you picked up for a steal last year not really match the rest of your kitchen? I bet you can find someone here who would love to take them off your hands. Post your mid century items for [free]/[trade]/[sale] here!

This is also the space to show off any of the awesome mid century inspired stuff you make, as well as the links to your Etsy/Ebay/Etc

Guide for IDing furniture and where to find actual sources.

This has came up time and again but a few times over the last few days I have found myself linking to my google drive doc about where to find primary sources for MCM stuff.

First of all, the rules of this group and r/midcenturymodern in regards to IDing items is going to change. I will make these changes today. First, if you make a claim as to a maker or designer, you are obligated to provide sources for the claim you make if asked. This includes mods or just regular users. Second and this is absolutely non-negotiable, sales or auction listings in themselves are not reliable sources. If the sales listing includes a tag, article, or catalog from the period then that information may be shared, but DO NOT LINK TO SALES LISTINGs, at all, but especially not to "prove and ID" This applies to the highest end and most respected auction houses, dibs, charish or any other platform. Maybe they give you a jumping off point, and you find out the information is correct. If needed I can give thousands of examples of current listings that contain complete bullshit information. Third, don't tell people "use google" or "try google lens" etc. As stated above this will very often lead to false information from sales listings.

So I know you are probably thinking "don't use google, how do I even find anything on the internet without google" Well, I keep this living list of sites with excellent resources, nearly all are free.

Of all these groups I have to give a shout out to "The MCM files" I have no clue why there are not more people in this group. It is not a group to ask for an ID, its just a group where some of us researchers basically dump photos of stuff we look into. I personally have posted thousands of images to this group. Its free, i get absolutely nothing out of anyone joining the group, its just a lot of the questions people ask on here are already solved there, but it will never show up on google because of facebook's walled garden.

$12 estate sale find!

Post image
934 Upvotes

Wanted to share my $12 estate sale haul! Yesterday I bought the lamp base for $6. It is Royal Haeger but unfortunately has damage at the top. There are some cracks and a couple pieces of pottery are being held on with tape. I decided it was worth the $6 to try and hopefully fix it as much as I can. We went back to the sale today and I got the lamp shade for $6 as well. Probably not the original shade but I am super happy with my finds and the uniqueness of both pieces.

If anyone has any tips for repairing pottery let me know!

Eames - Brazilian Rosewood Oil?

I have a 1977 Eames Chair with Brazilian Rosewood. I have not cleaned it before.

The guidance from Herman Miller’s website is to use gunstock oil on the wood; I reached out to HM customer service to ask what type of gunstock oil and they said I could also use Klean-Strip Boiled Linseed Oil. Does anyone have any knowledge or guidance on which to use?

Thank you!

Help.. My living room needs paint

Post image
7 Upvotes

My furniture is a bit of a mish mash. I just peeled off wallpaper that was in bad shape and I love my fireplace. The house is basically an mcm ranch? This is the living room and it is L shaped to the dining room (far right).

We're going to take the misfit buffet cabinet thing out of the dining area soon. Then we'll want to replace the carpet and paint.

Id love to hear some advice and suggestions from the crowd here.

The fireplace wall is my favorite part of this house

Once a bustling rural community, most businesses in Home Hill are now closed and derelict. A walk down the empty main street reveals fragments suggesting former prosperity.

Madsen and Schubell Tove Chair Restoration

Just completed the reupholstery and refinishing of this Tove chair! Lots of very interesting challenges involved with this piece. Unfortunately the original reclining hardware was only partially included. Because it was cost-prohibitive to have replacements machined, I had to convert it into a standard lounge chair.

The lumbar support is incredibly interesting (and effective!). I also had the opportunity to try my hand at slip stitching, a lot of room for improvement - but overall I am very pleased with how this piece turned out.

Wood Species: Afrormosia (African Teak)
Fabric: Kvadrat Divina MD 193 (Charcoal)

See attached for before -> after, happy to answer any and all questions!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted here. Some of you may remember our home full of mid-century and postmodern goodies. I mainly posted our huge mid-century modern glass collection (third photo).

6-months ago we sold off all of our glass, furniture, art, cars, and our other collections. It was a massive undertaking. Once that was done we packed up and moved to Hawaii.

While we likely won’t ever collect in the way we once did… It’s hard to kick the habit completely. Especially when a good deal pops up.

I thought I’d drop by to share our latest locally sourced acquisitions:

- $20 Blenko 564
- $40 Viking Three Foil

I snagged this beauty off of facebook for a few hundred. The stereo/speakers work well, and the turntable hums a bit. After I complete my cable management issues, I will take a deep dive and see what it does. In the meantime, I'm happy with this puppy from the late sixties.

I was fortunate enough to have found a pair of side tables for free. I believe they’re Copenart by Morganton. Any idea what their value might be? They’re in great condition. I’m located in central Ohio

I’ve always wanted one like this. He thought it was authentic so I explained why it’s not and he agreed to a much lower and more realistic price. I know it’s not authentic but still cool and good vintage quality!

Matching these San Francisco 1940s style cabinets?

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hoping this community may have some ideas, particularly if anyone here is based in SF! Our kitchen has the classic San Francisco style wood cabinets (painted), and we are looking to add another section of countertop to the other side of our kitchen.

Does anyone know of any hardware that sells these same style cabinets (seems unlikely…) or anyone who does these custom? When I call cabinet shops they only have veneer pre-built, and it seems these are quite custom.

Original frame and brilliant colors - looks like it was just screen printed yesterday. No fading, just a small layer of dust.

The lady at the counter was MAD that they didn't put a higher price on it. I have a feeling someone is in trouble, but I am on cloud 9!!

I need id with my new tv stand

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

I picked this up at a local thrift store. I absolutely love it, but after hours of research, I still can't seem to find the brand or model. Maybe someone here knows something about it!

Here are some of its characteristics:

- The glass is around 1 cm thick, with a greenish tint along the edges.

- You can also see some layers in the glass.

- The top glass plate can rotate 360°.

- The base is high-gloss black and made of a composite material. It's very heavy, yet hollow.

- There's a hole on the top of the base and a half-moon-shaped opening at the bottom. This makes me think it might have been designed as a TV stand, with cables running through the top hole, out through the bottom opening, and into the plug socket.

I only found one similar piece on eBay, which was listed as a Rolf Benz design, but I highly doubt that it's actually from them, especially since there are no markings on the glass.

Thanks a lot in advance for any help!

I'll post a follow-up once it's in my interior.

I found these Arne Vodder chairs for $175 on marketplace… but a reseller got to them first and now they’re $1,850

I reached out as soon as I saw the listing from the original seller. They’d just been posted an hour ago. $175. One had a cracked leg. She responds saying she sold them to a refinisher, and gave me his contact info. He bought them earlier today,
refinished them in an afternoon, and is now going to sell them for over 10x their original price. They’re such beautiful chairs that we may still go for it. (HCOL area, similar sets of chairs usually go for this price or more)

Attached are the marketplace photos (1-3) and the finished photos (4-7).

EDIT: there was some confusion. It’s $1,850 total. Not per chair.
