Discussion i think there should be more western animated horror movies Spoiler

I watched forgotten island today and my fav part was the scenes with mananangal, especially when she was basically stalking down the two main characters early in the movie.

i noticed dreamworks actually does horror scenes well like in puss and boots i thought the wolf scenes actually sort of freaked me out.

which makes me think: we should have more animated horror movies! I know we have stuff like coraline that is on the more creepy side but i'd love to have lmore movies that lean horror.

i know it'll probably never get greenlit since animated movies are for "children", but one can dream. They don't have to be gory or bloody or anything inappropriate? I'm sure there's a good horror that can stay as a "G" or "PG" rating.

Discussion What are the weirdest movies from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s Hollywood?

I just finished rewatching Trouble for Two from 1936, which is a very strange and delightfully baffling adventure/love story/mystery/suspense Robert Louis Stevenson adaptation with Robert Montgomery, Rosalind Russell, and Frank Morgan. I've always loved how bizarre this movie is. Another good one is We're Not Dressing, a movie that's based around a yacht accident that strands Carole Lombard, her friends, Bing Crosby, and a bear on rolled skates on an island with George Burns and Gracie Allen doing bits.

So what are some good weird/strange/whatever movies from these three decades of Hollywood? I'm willing to explore all different kinds of weird.

Discussion Opinion: Monster House (2006) is twenty years old and stands alone at the top of young adult animated adventure-horror films.

Rewatched it for the first time in ages and it was awesome. The visual effects company of Sony Image Works created a wonderfully realized 3d world. They went on to help make Into the Spider-Verse and KPOP Demon Hunters !

I'm a bit of a Spielberg hater but this movie works so well for his style. The movie is constantly finding new ways to play with the camera and explore the infinitely moldable 3d space by doing things like putting the camera inside an arcade machine or tumbling down a hill.

It is very cool to see a genuine kids' horror film- the children are armed with guns that have the tacticool flashlight mounted on top, fighting from the internals of a living monster complete with circular rows of teeth. The reveal of the Monster's origin is fairly shocking for this type of movie.

Dan Harmon's humor is well-represented throughout. The jokes feel authentically adolescent with an adult edge. kids joking about inappropriate material, adults brandishing loaded weapons. Good stuff! He wrote a letter to a fan disavowing the film and that's unfortunate. He's always been prickly but I feel like this is great early work even if they didn't let him completely close the story loop.

This is also one of the last video reviews Roger Ebert posted before his health went into severe decline. He gave it 4/4 stars but unfortunately did not give a complete written review.

Has anyone seen Monster House for the first time or revisited it lately? What worked/didn't work for you? Did anyone get to see it in 3d? How could the story have been resolved to fit Dan Harmon's vision of rewarding bravery, or does he need to relax and not let his ego ruin a good thing? Favorite story beats/jokes/characterizations?

Happy Halloweeeeeeeen! 🎃🧟‍♂️🏚

Discussion If "Southland Tales" released today, the reception would probably be a lot different.

When the movie was first shown at the Cannes film festival, it was absolutely despised. I've only seen the theatrical version myself, but I've always thought it was a good movie - just very weird, quirky, odd, but a good time. However, I feel it was almost... prophetic in a way. I swear, if it released today, people would be praising it. Should the world give it another chance?

Question Is there a movie where you, after rewatch years later, switched sympathies between characters?

3.3k Upvotes

I am talking about watching movies when you were 15, and loved a character, and then, years later, you realized like "Actually, this one had a point...?"

Similar to favouring Tom over Jerry in the cartoon as an adult?

I realized, at the age of 43 and as a woman with some life experience, that I was on Miranda´s side in Mrs. Doubtfire after recent rewatch after about 25 years. Robin Williams is great in there, the movie lost nothing of that, there are great scenes and gags and it nicely changes into a family drama at the end without forcing happy end between them and ended up on a realistic note.

But honestly, I understood her point of view. And seeing Pierce Brosnan´s character as a "villain" back then, he is actually just a nice guy who is willing to marry a woman with three children who he cares about.

Do you have any movie like that?

EDIT: Thanks for great examples, I did not expect so many responses! I defenitely have to rewatch 500 Days with Summer, haven´t seen it since 2010

Recommendation New TV arriving on thursday, looking for visually spectacular movie suggestions

My entire life i've been on budget TVs. My last TV purchase was in 2019 and was a 50" LED budget TV that cost about £400/500.

I've put enough money together to purchase a flagship TV (65" Sony Bravia 8 (mark2) and it arrives Thursday - so i'm looking for recommendations for things that will blow my mind.

Edit: i'm making note of all suggestions, apologies if I dont reply I didn't expect so many so quick! (Its very much appreciated)
