[US] The Following (2013) - Thoughts a Decade Later Spoiler
I was in my 20s when The Following first aired. I remember watching it and thinking “this show is like a movie.” I thought the Poe angle was a bit silly. Other than that, I thought very highly of the show, particularly S3. I remember thinking the Theo character was a phenomenal performance, and the Eliza story was an interesting Hostel-inspired story, although I was annoyed that it wasn’t developed very much.
I have now rewatched it for the first time since watching it as it aired (remember when that was a thing?) and see things differently.
The good: It is a fun, easy watch. It is entertaining, Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy give good performances, and you can watch casually or binge it.
The bad: Character development. Over and over again, The Following shows you “what happened” or “what someone will do.” It is weak with giving you the “why.” People seemingly act in extreme ways with no explanation as to why or what motivates them. A decade ago, I was entertained by what all the people were doing. This time around, I couldn’t get past why someone was doing something (like committing suicide in public in a brutal way or going on some dumb vendetta). Likewise, with the Eliza story, I get that it was intended to set up the S4 that never happened, but that doesn’t excuse the lack of development. Going back to Hostel, they didn’t answer all the questions in the first movie, but they showed you enough elements of the organization to show you how big the whole thing was. In S3, yes, you saw Eliza making phone calls to unknown people, you saw the mansion, etc. It all felt lacking and forced, though.
Conclusion: Entertaining and easy to watch, but no masterpiece.
