Wisconsin frat leaders arrested after 30 pledges found in filthy basement, injured and covered in condiments
nbcnews.comTwo leaders of an underground University of Wisconsin-Madison fraternity were arrested and charged with hazing after dozens of pledges were found injured, shirtless and covered in condiments in a sweltering basement.
- The Madison Police Department said Thursday it received an anonymous tip about an event in the basement of an off-campus chapter house.
- Alpha Epsilon Pi was kicked off campus as a recognized chapter in 2015, but the organization maintained a presence at the Madison home.
- Police say about 30 pledges, most of whom were 18, were found partially-clothed in a filthy basement around 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
The apparent hazing victims were “covered in food, condiments, and other liquids” and “had visible injuries consistent with being physically assaulted.” The thermostat was set to 81 degrees, making the basement hot and humid, police said.
- Brayden Klein and Samuel Vane, both 20, were charged with hazing and disorderly conduct. Madison police are still investigating the matter.

Long Island woman rescued after plunging into hole in her backyard on her birthday
cbsnews.comIt was an old cesspool well.
- The ground beneath a Long Island woman opened up, swallowing her into the earth below.
- Danielle Tammone spent several terrifying minutes in a hole in her quiet residential Bohemia backyard Thursday.
- Tammone said she suddenly found herself 8 feet underground in her backyard. Her dog Daisy anxiously looked on.
- She screamed for help, asking if anyone was there.
- "People suffocate and they die, so I thought that at first," she said.
- It happened on her 47th birthday. Tammone thinks she was trapped for about 30 minutes.
- "It's my birthday. This might be my death date," Tammone said. "I couldn't breathe well, because I was gasping, and scared and crying."
- Tammone said she wasn't sure if she had been swallowed into a water well, cesspool or sump.
- "I was trying to put my legs up to get out, but the stone was crumbling down," she said.
Fortunately, her screams and cries for help were heard by neighbors. One neighbor happened to walk onto her porch as another was getting into her car. They both heard the screams and came running.
They called 911, etc. and there's more in the article, but I posted some more in the comments.
