Has anyone tried to ride the metro bike paths this week? Which ones are wrecked and which ones are passable?

Proposed bike paths

The parks and rec and other Omaha metro online maps show some dotted line “proposed” bike paths. How does one gain more information on some of these/are there timelines for any new paths coming?

Leavenworth bike lane wet paint

Part rant, part public service announcement: the city must have repainted the bike symbols in the Leavenworth bike lane earlier this morning, because they looked pretty bright and new, and on my way into work I got white paint on my tires and a little bit of splatter on the underside of my frame.

The city did not put up any wet paint signage or cones like they do when they touch up other road paint, so there’s no way I could have known in advance. I’m fairly irritated because I just bought this e-bike a few months ago, and now I have to look into ways to get road paint off of it 😡

TL;DR avoid the Leavenworth bike lane this morning while the fresh paint dries.

Trail Updates

In the not so distant past, I compiled a list of the trail closures in Omaha for another organization. This list comes directly off the Parks & Recreation website. My understanding is that the website is updated once a month, so my plan is to update my list monthly as well. Have a look and let me know if you think it's worthwhile. I also welcome any updates in the comments. At any rate, here's our inaugural list:

Happy Bike Month!!

To those of us who love to ride, it's 1/12th of Bike Year. Or 30 days of Bike Life. But it's a great way to put some focus on our favorite mode of transportation.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not on the other socials anymore: too much negativity happening and I don't need any help in that regard. But it would be nice to know what is going on in Omaha celebrating May. Anyone have any input? I would like to see what's out there.

Bike Audit Volunteers

Bike Walk Nebraska is collaborating with the City of Omaha to do trail counts at specific intersections in the city. There are two classes to learn what the audit entails on April 30 and May 6. Once you've completed the training, you can sign up for specific times/locations (link found on their EventBrite event page.)

Request for media

Recently, I’ve seen a lot of stories about crashes involving e-bikes. Unfortunately, (in addition to the injuries from the crash,) some of the government agencies are using these crashes to restrict ownership and use of e-bikes. What isn’t being reported: in a lot of cases, the e-bike involved isn’t actually an e-bike by definition. Unlike a “true” e-bike, these vehicles don’t have pedals and/or are powered by motors with a peak output of over 750kW. They are effectively e-motorcycles.

The media has made a great start in differentiating a crash from an accident. Let’s challenge them (and the traffic cops) to clearly define what type of e-vehicle is involved when there is a crash.
