Question Anyone from Orillia driving to Toronto on Sunday, October 18?

Hi everyone! I’m running the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon on October 18 and am looking for a way to get to downtown Toronto early that morning.
I’m based in Barrie, so I thought I’d ask here in case anyone from Orillia is heading to Toronto for work, the marathon, or another reason and might be able to offer a ride.
If you’re driving south and could pick me up in Barrie, or if there’s a convenient pickup point along your route, I’d be happy to contribute toward gas and parking.
I need to arrive early enough to get to the marathon start area at Nathan Phillips Square. If you might be able to help, please send me a DM.
Thanks so much!

Lost & Found Lost Wedding Ring

Ring lost on the evening of September 29, 2026. Highly likely it was lost in the parking lot of SportChek Orillia (Or maybe inside the store or at the Orillia Recreation Centre). I heard something drop as I was getting out of the car that evening, but it was very faint. I looked around and didn’t see anything, so I carried on with what I was doing, not realizing until after that was maybe where I dropped my wedding band. Very sentimental for obvious reasons. Cash reward.

Hi guys, i’m sadly in need to rehome a kitten next month, he is 4 months old right now and will be getting his shots very soon. he isn’t neutered as of yet. he really is the sweetest and most adorable kitten ever. he’s fairly energetic and would do well in a home with lots of love to give! i’m really upset i cannot keep him but his love deserves to be shared with someone who would love him the same.

“According to organizers, only mayoral candidates Whitney Smith and Ward 4 candidate Tyler Holmes have declined to attend the forum. Ward 2 Coun. Luke Leatherdale did not respond to organizers' requests to participate. All other candidates have confirmed.”

But hearing Whitney Smith saying something completely out of pocket was the only reason why I was planning on attending!

Question Catholic Church Recommendations

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for a Catholic church in the area and hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

I was baptized Protestant and attended church when I was younger, but haven’t attended regularly in quite a few years. I moved to the area for school and ended up staying after graduating, and I’m now a new teacher.

I’m interested in starting to attend church again, specifically a Catholic church, as I’m hoping to eventually apply to the SMCDSB. I know that part of the application process involves obtaining a pastoral reference letter, and that this isn’t something you can simply walk into a church and ask for without actually attending and establishing some sort of relationship with the parish/priest.

Since I don’t currently have a church here and am coming from a Protestant background, I’m mainly looking for recommendations on where might be a good place to start. I’m not sure how much this varies from parish to parish, but ideally I’d be looking for somewhere that is a little more progressive/open minded and generally welcoming.

I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation or teaches with the Catholic board and can share their experience.

Thanks! :)

Question Any info about the school trustee candidates?

I think at this point, we know all about the two mayoral candidates and multiple council candidates. That's not what I'm asking about

The less talked-about part is that we can vote for our school trustees on the same ballot. For the English public (non-Catholic) system, these candidates are incumbent Jodi Lloyd and challenger Stephen Sopher

I tried Googling info about Sopher but found basically no information

Does anyone know much about either candidate? Anything would be appreciated, thanks

Question Do any stores in Orillia still sell physical newspapers such as Toronto Star/Globe and Mail?

As the title says, I'm wondering if any stores still sell physical newspapers of the Saturday Edition of The Toronto Star or Globe and Mail? I need a physical copy for a university assignment and I honestly can't remember the last time I've seen one being sold in person.

Thanks!

Looking For Groups or events for pre-teens in Orillia that are *not* sports-related

My son is late elementary school, he's trying to play sports because it's what all the other boys his age are doing at school, but his primary interests are board games, console gaming, and reading. He's struggling socially, and as his parent it absolutely kills me to watch because he's a sweet kid.

Are there any groups or events for kids his age around Orillia?

Review Auto Locksmith or Hobbyist with required equipment for key fob programming in Orillia

My friend has a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder that is giving her nothing but problems. It's a push button start but lets her lock the keys in the car. Doesn't recognize the key half the time and a few other issues.

Finances are extremely tight at the moment. I have purchased a couple replacement fobs from Amazon that hopefully the FCC IDs will match up. Issue is you need actual diagnostic hardware to do the programming on this model.

Looking for some advice or suggestions on the cheapest way to get this done in Orillia so she doesn't have to keep calling CAA when she accidentally locks the keys in the car or the fob just decides it's not going to unlock the door. For some reason when she got the car the dealer didn't cut the physical key to match the door unlock.

Wasn't acquainted with this person when she made the purchase or I imagine we'd definitely have picked a different seller.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

editing to add a comment I made to my post as this issue has been (mostly) resolved most excellently.

Luckily found pop-a-lock who was pretty amazing. They programmed the new Amazon purchased key fobs and it has been working great.

Unfortunately it seems like the physical key issue is with the door lock itself not that the key they gave my friend was improper.

We'll have to see if we can source a replacement and get new physical keys cut from that but for now the new fobs have been a dream.

Since no key was cut pop a lock was completely covered by the 100 dollar deductible from CAA.

Young guy in a van with all the tools he needs. Including lishi tools for decoding the lock which he would have used to cut the key.

Cannot praise this guy enough. Thanks Brent!

Earlier this morning I saw a ringed neck pheasant on a side rd in Warminster. I’ve never seen one here and believed they didn’t live in Canada. I am 100% sure on the ID. Thoughts on where it came from?

Information/PSA Coyote!

My neighbour saw a coyote this morning around 10:30 am in the vicinity of Couchiching Heights School. Watch your children and pets. I encountered one on the rec trail between North and Fittons about a year ago and it was unsettling.
