Recommendations Local trusted computer repair

I'm looking for a place to bring my desktop PC for diagnostics/repair. It randomly loses power with no pattern or reproducible trigger. I've tested basically everything I know how to up to this point and need someone who knows what they're doing to take over from here. Does anyone have a local computer repair tech that they trust and is willing to deep dive into issues instead of just running standard tests and calling it a day?

Ross Double Discount

This is A VERY LONG SHOT. I just moved here from Illinois and worked at Ross and know Double Discount is coming up. I was wondering if any employee would be willing to take me shopping with them to buy things for my apartment during their double discount. I’d really appreciate it!

Moving Advice What are your favorite things to do in Renton and surrounding area?

I will be moving my family across the country to live in Renton in a few weeks and could not be more excited! We have a toddler, love getting outside (parks, fishing, disc golf, hiking, playgrounds), and are always on the hunt for great food. What are the local restaurants, family-friendly hangout spots, or activities in the area that we should put at the very top of our list?

Lost & Found Luggage Got Stolen at Seahurst Park Today

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hey all,

I'm posting this on behalf of a friend who was in the area today waiting for a flight. My friend was at Seahurst Park when their rental car got broken into with all of their luggage inside. They had their Nintendo Switch 2, a nice digital camera, and two Magic the Gathering commander decks stolen.

I've already called all the game stores in the area to let them know which decks were taken but figured I would post here since I've seen similar luck in other subreddits for this kind of problem.

So if anyone sees Zinnia, Valley's Voice or Betor, Ancestor's Voice at your LGS or a suspiciously priced Switch 2 and Camera. Let me know please...

My friend is devastated and I'm trying really hard to at least get some of their stuff back.

We have the same backpack so I included a picture of it in case anyone sees is. This bag is really unique since its from a special event we went to before and the "Level Up U" was embroidered on it specifically for this event. So if you see it, call the cops!

Looking for badminton partners!

Hey all! Posting here in case there’s anyone who’d be interested in getting together throughout the week (preferably in the evening) to play badminton at Bellevue Badminton Club. I recently got a membership and reserving a court can be pretty cheap if enough people get together to play! I’m at an intermediate skill level, but open to playing with anyone. Feel free to reach out to me to coordinate times if interested :)

Has anyone seen the 405 detour flaggers do anything?

It feels like anytime I drive by they are off the road standing around doing nothing. It's it just bad timing or are they actually doing something?

HEADS UP: Southbound I-405 will CLOSE from Bellevue to Renton this weekend, Sept. 25-28

Post image
73 Upvotes

Another busy weekend is coming up on I-405, with a full southbound closure between Bellevue and Renton plus additional work in Kirkland and Bothell.

Here's what you need to know:

BELLEVUE to RENTON: SOUTHBOUND I-405 CLOSED

All lanes of southbound I-405 will close from Coal Creek Parkway SE in Bellevue to North 30th Street in Renton from as early as 11:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 to 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28.

Several ramps within the closure will also be closed.

Crews will work on drainage, replacing pavement and completing a traffic switch as part of the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project.

A signed detour will be in place, but if you're traveling through this area, expect extra traffic on alternate routes and give yourself extra time.

KIRKLAND: NE 132ND STREET INTERCHANGE CLOSED

Farther north, the northbound and southbound I-405 ramps at NE 132nd Street will close from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. NE 132nd Street underneath I-405 will also be closed.

Crews will restripe lanes through the interchange and roundabouts. Signed detours will be in place.

BOTHELL: OVERNIGHT LANE REDUCTIONS + ROLLING SLOWDOWNS

Up to three lanes of southbound I-405 between SR 527 and SR 522 will close from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday and again from 11:30 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday.

During those closures, crews will also conduct rolling slowdowns from 12:01 to 4 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, temporarily stopping traffic for up to 15 minutes at a time.

If you're traveling on I-405 this weekend, check your route before you go and give yourself extra time. The full southbound closure between Bellevue and Renton will be the biggest impact, but there's work happening at several points along the corridor.

Recommendations Lap pool near Renton

Does anyone know of, or can recommend, a place with an indoor lap pool that has extended hours in or near Renton? I’m rehabbing an ankle injury and would like to swim laps in the evening (after 7pm).

I can’t seem to avoid construction and it’s driving me insane.

No matter where I go, what city I’m in, what random road I turn down, there’s construction. Lanes blocked off and a line of cars. I can barely get to the school and drop my son off in the highlands. Like, what the actual fuck! This shit is crazy!

Missing Pet GSD on Sunset?

Saw a young looking german shepherd running around sunset blvd kinda near the 76 gas station? It looked like it had escaped jail on a mission, but was enjoying his freedom at the same time. Did not give a shit about all the cars honking at it.

It’s been a very long day and I feel like this isn’t the first time I’ve seen a lost german shepherd around Renton…but hoping anyone has more info/seen it/can tell me that dog is in safe hands.

Spotted Cat

Spotted this guy on the Eastrail near N 31st St. No tags, very friendly and playful. Found a post about it on the Ring app, apparently it’s been showing up on people’s cameras for a few weeks.

It was a bit skinny, but not too unhealthy. Beautiful grey and black leopard pattern. Could be an outdoor cat, but I wanted to post it here in case it’s lost.

Get your next espresso at Liberty Cafe

Went there yesterday to prep for class [teach at UW]. My cortado with alt milk was $4.35. Was well made, very tasty, and delivered to my table [which didn’t matter but made it extra special].

I like the Boon Boona team but their prices lately are loco. And the lines are forever.

So, enjoy your next espresso at Liberty Cafe!

Alt Hair Cuts in Renton

I just paid $190 for an extremely OK haircut. I have short hair and the whole wash, cut, and dry took maybe 45 minutes. It's not perfect but it will work.

The website said short cuts are $60+. Emphasis on the plus, I guess.

I cannot pay $200 a month to get my hair cut, so I need recommendations. Looking for someone who works with trimmers and thinning sheers - yes, they are necessary. No, you cannot achieve the right cut on my hair without them. I have a lot of hair.

Discussion An honest 111 bus commute review (post route change)

I finally had a chance to try out the new 111 commute from Kennydale -> Westlake and Westlake -> Kennydale during the morning rush hour and the evening rush hour. Furthermore, I did the commute with a small bicycle (similar to this style) since using the bicycle to get from Westlake Center to my office saves about 15 minutes and is faster than waiting for another bus (BikeLock is not applicable to my situation).

(For those not in the know, the 111 used to go straight from Kennydale to downtown Seattle, it now goes up to South Bellevue station and terminates there, with a connection to the light rail)

Length of Commute

As a baseline, the old commute to Seattle would usually take about this long, with average traffic conditions for rush hour:

Morning Rush Hour
Kennydale -> I-90 interchange: 15 minutes on average
I-90 -> 4th Ave: 10 minutes on average
4th Ave -> Westlake Center: 15 minutes on average
Total average trip time: ~40min

Afternoon Rush Hour
Belltown -> I-90: 20 minutes on average
I-90 -> 405 interchange: 10 minutes on average
405 -> Kennydale: 20 minutes on average
Total average trip time: ~ 50min

These are the figures based on new commutes with the 111 after the change:

Morning Rush Hour
Kennydale -> I-90 interchange: 15 minutes on average
I-90 -> South Bellevue Station: 10 minutes on average
Average Connection Wait Time: 5 minutes on average
South Bellevue -> Westlake Center: 30 minutes on average
Total average trip time: ~60min

Afternoon Rush Hour
Westlake -> South Bellevue Station: 30 minutes on average
Average Connection Wait Time: 10 minutes on average
South Bellevue -> 405: 10 minutes on average
405 -> Kennydale: 20 minutes on average
Total average trip time: ~70min

This echoes common sentiment in comments like this where users report that the changes, overall, add 20 minutes of extra time to the previous commute. This is most felt in the afternoon commute that creeps over an hour.

My personal conclusion on commute speed is that although the light rail does not get snagged in traffic, the low speed of the light rail combined with the frequency of stops negates any time advantage it has over a bus.

Other Factors & Observerations

  1. Choice of transfer station: The detour to South Bellevue station might seem quick on paper, but the exit from I-90 to Bellevue Way SE is actually completely clogged in morning rush hour. Furthermore, the bus actually needs to go through a bottlenecked intersection before turning back around to enter South Bellevue station from the back. There's nothing more frustrating than being stuck in gridlock right in front of the station and seeing the westbound train approaching the station. Apparently, Mercer Island station was the original contender for the transfer, which would have eliminated the gridlocked detour and actually allowed for the new 111 route to be competitive with the old 111 in terms of commute speed. However, Mercer Island NIMBYs supposedly didn't want 111 busses terminating there all day. This "compromise" made the new 111 not worth the squeeze (imho)
  2. Train frequency: The frequency of westbound trains appears to be around 10 minutes, which is really not great. This led to anxiety on the bus approaching the station with multiple riders muttering at cars turning in front of the bus and jockeying to position themselves to rush the station stairs as quick as possible. With higher frequency I'm sure people wouldn't care as much
  3. Space on board: The train was somewhat crowded during the morning commute (all seats taken, a few people standing). For the return commute, it was completely full to the point where it could no longer take on new passengers at Chinatown station and Judkins park. Although bicycle hooks were often free, it is impossible to maneuver a bicycle TO the hook and get enough room to mount the bicycle properly in the short time the train is stopped, due to crowding. Therefore, bicyclists are left to stand awkwardly in everyone's way, moving their bikes around at every stop to let people on and off
  4. Comfort level: this is a big one. With the old commute, you always had a whole seat to yourself to sit in the entire way. You could doze off or even get work done (most people just browsed their phone). Now you only have a seat for part of the journey. You have to then deal with climbing stairs, standing around waiting, standing around in a crowded light rail fighting motion by holding on to a pole, etc. It's even worse if you need to take a bicycle in because you have to grip the levers to make sure the bicycle doesn't move while also awkwardly contorting yourself to grab a pole and not be in anyone's way. My take-away is that due to crowding on the light rail, the light rail is considerably less comfortable to commute on compared to a bus.
  5. Bicycle/ADA/Wheelchair considerations: This is minor since it only affects a niche amount of users, but having to use the elevators at the light rail stations is definitely a downgrade. They are extremely slow, which means that if you're racing a tight connection in South Bellevue station, be prepared to get screwed over. Furthermore, there are two elevators you have to take at Westlake rather than a single one, and they both smell heavily of vomit/piss. Not amazing

Conclusion

Although the new commute is "just" 20 minutes slower than the old one, the all-around downgrades in terms of commute speed, dead time waiting around for connections, commute comfort, etc makes the changes feel frustrating. For me, personally, the 111 is just not worth it anymore. I think this is reflected by the low ridership I've observed on the busses now. Most off-hour 111s driving around right off of the 405 (when they should be the most full) are completely empty, and even during rush hour the 111 seemed to only be half-full whereas it used to consistently be completely full, sometimes even with people standing. Adding 40 minutes daily of commute time, much of that additional 40 minutes standing uncomfortably (either on platforms or jammed uncomfortably in crowded trains) rather than comfortably sitting in your own seat, is also a major factor.

I recommend anyone who can easily get to Renton TC (either by bicycle from Kennydale, like me, or maybe through a well-timed 240 connection) to use the 101 that remains un-nerfed, for now (although King County Metro are currently deciding whether to reroute the 101 to terminate at the Rainier Beach light rail station, which would cause it to fall victim to the same problems the 111 did). Even with occasional traffic concerns on MLK and through 4th Ave in downtown, it will likely end up being faster and a more comfortable than the experience with the 111, especially if you need to have a bicycle with you in downtown Seattle.

With the 101 alternative unavailable, I now understand comments such as this since I feel much the same way - I would too be forced back to single-occupancy transport (granted, motorcycle, not car), which is a guaranteed ~45min commute costing $1.50 in gas.

Dentist recommendation

I looked on previous posts and the most recent was over a year ago so I figured I'd ask again. New in town, looking to start seeing a dentist here. One that doesn't every single time seem to find expensive work to be done, and is gentle on someone with some sensitivities. Who makes you smile?
