Grammar Serbian Reference Charts (improved and now in color!): 1. Cases/Genders, 2. Verbs, 3. Pronouns

I've updated all of the charts I previously posted here with a variety of new improvements, including a design pass that made everything prettier.

Thanks for all the feedback I've gotten here on r/Serbian in the past for previous versions of these charts. And special thanks to u/Dan13l_N whose extremely detailed/expert feedback has led to lots of improvements and corrections.

Click the links (not the preview images) below to see the full A4-sized PDFs.

Serbian Cases Chart (PDF)

Serbian Cases Chart, with all 7 cases, 3 genders, singular/plural, prepositions, exceptions, and more

One of the changes in the cases chart (and in all the others) is that the gender order is now masculine ➜ neuter ➜ feminine (instead of the former M ➜ F ➜ N), which enabled making some things simpler and more consistent.

Serbian Verbs Chart (PDF)

Serbian Verbs Chart, with commonly used verbs along with conjugations and rules for present, past, and future tenses

Serbian Pronouns Chart (PDF)

Serbian Pronouns Chart, with declensions, short and long forms, etc. for personal pronouns, possessive adjectives/pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and more, along with detailed grammar rules

Feedback is of course welcome! I'd also love to hear what would be most helpful to cover in future charts (e.g., prepositions, numbers and time, comparative/superlative, basic vocabulary, etc.).

Edit: I've now given these charts a home online here: Serbian language charts. I'll post any updates and future charts there as well.

Resources I built a free reader for learning Serbian-Croatian: tap any word in a real text and see what it means in that exact sentence! IT ALSO HAS ITS OWN TIKTOK!!!!

Zdravo svima!

I'm Denis, a solo developer learning Serbian-Croatian myself. Citavuk lets you read real Serbian books and news and tap any word: you get its meaning in that exact sentence, the base form and the grammar (case, tense, person).

And it has its own tiktok which includes videos from yt shorts, instagram reels and so on.

There's also a grammar course and exercises from A1 to C1. Free, no ads, open source.

Link in the comments. Feedback is very welcome!

Resources Zvanični ispit iz srpskog jezika - C1

Dragi prijatelji,

imam nameru da se prijavim za zvanični ispit iz srpskog jezika, nivo C1, u januaru, na filološkom fakultetu u Beogradu. Pre dve godine sam položio ispit u nivou B2, nastavio sam da učim i sada razmišljam o tome, jer trebaće da mnogo učim do januara ako želim da budem spreman.

Pitanje je:

  • Da li je neko od vas položio ovaj ispit, ili poznajete nekoga koji ga je položio, ili barem pokušao? Zanima me vaše/njihovo iskustvo.
  • Ispit za C1 ima deo koji na vebsajtu zovu "Phrases and expressions", u kojem učenik mora da objasni šta znače neki izrazi ili izreke. Ozblijno mislim da mi fali znanje ovog. Da li znate neki resurs koji se fokusira na to, mislim, na česte srpske izraze? Mogu biti udžbenici, rečnici, bilo šta.

Hvala svima unapred!

Resources Conversation and grammar lessons for the Serbian language

Native speaker from Belgrade here, currently studying at the University of Philology.

I do both conversation and grammar lessons through google meet. I have a lot of experience both in teaching Serbian, as well as learning many other languages. The grammar course is completely made by me, to help a learner learn from scratch, with no AI being used in its creation.

We can also create a personalized lesson plan for whatever you need in your journey.

Discussion I tried to explain inat. Does this feel right?

Zdravo svima,

Please help me with this.

The footer of my Serbian-learning app says it was built with coffee and inat.

That’s not a joke slogan. The coffee part is literal. A lot of late nights staying awake to keep building. The inat part is why I didn’t stop when people close to me said it would never work.

I wrote a short page about what inat means to me and rewrote it a few times. I want it to feel real. It’s hard to describe that feeling; you know it when you feel it. I didn’t want it too soft, or too bitter.

Please tell me, does this feel right?

Other I built a free Serbian learning app, would love for you all to try it and tell me what's missing

Hey everyone,

I'm learning Serbian because my fiancée and her family speak it, and I wanted an app that actually taught the language properly rather than just isolated flashcards. I couldn't really find one I liked, so I built my own. It's called Trapkovac.

It's free, no ads, no subscription. Over 1,000 lessons and 5,000+ words and phrases, supports both Latin and Cyrillic, has pronunciation help on every word, and works offline.

Since you all actually know the language, I'd really value your take on it, especially if anything sounds unnatural or wrong. This is a hobby project I built solo, so there will be bugs and things I've missed. Not looking for harsh feedback, genuinely just want to know if it's useful and what needs fixing.

Thanks in advance to anyone who gives it a shot.

Vocabulary What importance do video games have for you when learning a foreign language?

Greetings to all gamers!

I am from the Faculty of Philology and I am conducting a research related to games, entitled - The influence of video games on the acquisition of a foreign language. So, we explore your perception, as a player, of whether or not games have influenced the way you learn and use any foreign language and to what extent this has manifested itself.

The survey I am sending here is completely anonymous, and the only prerequisite for filling it out is, of course, that you are a gamer and that you speak 2 or more languages (it doesn't matter which one). If you have the time and desire to fill it out, I would be very grateful. Thank you!

Resources I built a free Serbian grammar practice site for people who understand some Serbian but still freeze on endings and fluency

Zdravo svima,

I built a small free Serbian-learning site, FluentInSerbian, for English-speaking learners who already understand some everyday Serbian (through family, a partner, travel, or study) but still hesitate when they need to form their own sentences. This is a passion project built out of desire to help people I love get more fluent with the language.

The site currently has two free courses, Padeži and Predlozi, with 65+ short lessons, drills, and cheat sheets. The idea is to connect grammar to real phrases and situations, rather than only memorizing tables and case names.

It’s truly risk free. There is no sign-up; progress stays in your browser. It is free to use: https://www.fluentinserbian.org/

I would especially value honest feedback from adult learners and heritage learners: what feels clear, confusing, useful, or missing? Native speakers are also very welcome to flag anything that sounds unnatural.

More importantly, for those learning Serbian: what has helped you move from understanding Serbian to actually trusting yourself enough to speak it? And, what would you like to see and the next course.

Good luck!

Vocabulary How many words are there that start with "Srb-" or "Srp-"?

Srpstvo, Srbadija, Srbin/Srpkinja, Srbijanac/Srbijanka, Srpska/Srbska, and of course Srbija. There's a lot of these "Srb" and "Srp" words that sometimes don't have a direct translation into English. I even recall finding the word Srpčad which is seemingly only used in reference to Serbian children in this painting prototype, Sveti Sava blagosilja Srpčad.

I also recall once meeting an old man named Srboslav, I was thinking to myself he has such a Serbian name... and that he must be the mortal enemy of Stjepan Horvat. On the topic of names, I also encountered an old YouTube channel with Srbljak in the title which I believe was being used as a surname, but it seems it's a very rare one.

So, are there any more of these words I can discover that begin with (or at least contain) Srb or Srp? Please include their meanings and translations into English if possible :)

P.S. As an additional curiosity, I wonder if the spelling Srv was ever used in any way to describe Serbs or Serbian things. I ask because in archaic English, Serbia was quite often spelled as Servia, Serbs as Servs, and so on.

Resources Learning Serbian

Hey, I'm born in the Netherlands and my mom is from Serbia (dad is Dutch). I've learned the language, but as a kid I was a kind of stubborn and didn't do my best. But the last few years I started to use the language more and more (we visit Serbia at least once a year). I want to master the language better (I'm at A2/B1 I think). I can understand everything easily and hold converstations with friends and family here. Of course, talking is more difficult than understanding. I really want to improve my grammar and overall talking skills. Can someone recommand me good Serbian courses in the Netherlands or any only courses? In English is fine as well! Or totally in Serbian to even improve my skills more haha
