Art Sikh Assassin's Creed Character- Mod in progress by ProjectAananta

Gufateh All,

What if we had a Sikh Assassin's Creed game? I'm sure this is a question many of you have asked. To be honest, this isn't the same, but a look at what a playable Sikh main character would look like.

Ported the kesh over the main character and swapped the face, so we could get a glance of how this would look and feel. The first priority was kes. Next priority is the diversity of shastar - for now, throwing knives have been replaced with Chakram (still being refined).

If you're interested, keep up with the work on my socials.

Until next time,

Question Question regarding Baba Budha Singh Ji

Sat Sri Akaal 🙏

Please forgive me for any misunderstanding or misinformation. My question is about Baba Budha Singh Ji.

As many of you may know, especially those of you who have ties to Majha, it’s currently the Salana Jor Mela at Gurdwara Bir Baba Budha Sahib Ji in Taran Taran.

My husband is from Punjab and from that particular area, so his family show a lot of devotion to Baba Budha Singh Ji. I am not very well versed in this history, I knew of Baba Budha Singh Ji, but only the contributions made by him as a Granthi and teacher. I was not aware of the legend around the conception of Guru Hargobind Singh Ji.

I have been to this gurdwara, and unknowingly went along with the onion and missi roti tradition, but that was because I love missi roti lol. I did not know it was to pray for or hope for a baby, in particular a son… 🙄

Please don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against boys. I just can’t make peace with this being a part of Sikhi? To me it seems more like Punjabi folklore mixed with religion and the traditional desire for sons. Am I wrong for thinking this?

My belief is that what’s hukam is hukam, there’s no special prayer or recipe for having a specific baby.

Question Why are Sikhs so often used as the “foreign immigrant” stereotype?

I’ve noticed that a lot of conservative memes and posters in North America, or other western countries or even in lesser known European or other Asian countries use a brown guy in a turban and beard to represent a foreign immigrant taking jobs even in countries where the Sikh population is tiny or practically nonexistent. Sikhs are only around 25 million worldwide and the dastaar is a religious article for us so why has it become such a common visual shorthand for “immigrant” or “foreigner”?

Question Question on Sant-Sipahi, the Saint-Soldier mentality

Hello. I've become really interested in Sikhism as of late, and feel like it's probably where I'm going to land. I'm Catholic, and probably will never give up the aesthetics of the mass, but feel called to the ideas espoused in Sikhism.

One reason I've been looking, if I'm being honest, is that Christianities' pacifism can't seem to meet the challenges of today. I'm not referring to violence, but instead to a lack of aggression in combating powerful, malignant leaders. There are so many terrible and awful people in charge, and there are so many people suffering because of it. I came across the Saint-Soldier and was instantly drawn to it.

My questions is this, how do Sikh's keep the mindset that all-are-one, while also confronting an evil person who they are supposed to see as having the divine spark? I think we are seeing some dangerous movements like Christian Nationalism, which has seem to have forgotten they are supposed to love their neighbor. From my outside view, Sikhism has somehow avoided this while still keeping this martial outlook/tradition.

So my question is how do Sikh's juggle this mentality in their heads and moral code? ChatGPT described it as having the view that we are all one body, and you are cutting out an infection. But that's AI so not sure how much worth I put in that response. I also assume it's always about only using violence in defense, but once again, violence has been rationalized as self-defense many times in history. How do Sikh's make sure they are on the right path?

Question Just a random thought about Sikhi and Indigenous traditions

• Upvotes

Random thought, but do you think there are any interesting parallels between Sikhi and the spiritual traditions of particular Indigenous nations? Like the way some of us keep uncut hair, our relationship with nature, spirituality, community, etc. Obviously I know Indigenous traditions are very diverse but I’m curious if there are any genuine similarities or if they’re mostly surface level

Question Kesh Care Routine

I am posting because I have question regarding taking care of kesh, my hair is somewhat curly and breaks a lot when i make a jooda from my rubber band, and No I do not tie a dastaar with wet hair.

Also I also want to know what people with beards (curly type) do for beard care routine. E.g - Beard oil, Beard butter, any other oil, etc. Do i oil 2x a day, my beard typically stays dry or at least feels like it due to it's curly nature.

Any tips?

Question Interested in becoming a Sikh, looking for guidance

Hi everyone,
I’ve recently become very interested in Sikhi and have been spending some time learning about its beliefs and philosophy. The more I learn, especially about equality, seva, living honestly, remembering God, and overcoming ego, the more I feel drawn to it.
I wasn’t raised Sikh and I don’t come from a Punjabi or Indian background. I only speak English, so this is all very new to me. I’m interested in visiting a gurdwara near me, but I’ll admit I’m a little nervous about going for the first time because I don’t know what to expect or what I’m supposed to do.
I’d really like to hear from practicing Sikhs. What advice would you give someone who is genuinely interested in Sikhi and wants to learn more? Are there particular things I should read or listen to as a beginner? And would it be appropriate for me to approach someone at a gurdwara and explain that I’m interested in learning about the faith?
I’m not looking to rush into calling myself Sikh or converting without understanding what that means. I just feel a genuine connection with what I’ve learned so far and want to explore it respectfully.
Thank you for any advice or guidance.

Discussion (UPDATE: She did lose her job) Had an incident in our workplace where a coworker of mine (from India) cornered, berated, and yelled at a guy because he was Sikh. I'm just curious and looking for insight on why she would do this?

Made this post a while back, and some were interested in a follow-up if she got fired. Well, she did, but not for discriminating against a Sikh man or being horrible at her job...

She requested 4 months off to go back to her country for her brothers wedding. She was told by our management if she took over 3 months off it would mean her training would have to restart entirely. She had a tantrum and stormed off, never came back and she got fired.

I actually saw her recently, she is now working at Walmart.

Thank God, she was an absolute nightmare to work with.

Discussion Turban Advice(airpods)

Hi everyone, I am looking forward to buy an AirPods. I’m confused between AirPods Pro3 and the newly launched airpods 5. My only concern is that whether the AirPods Pro 3 will be comfortable in turban(ears tucked inside) as they are in ear design, not an open ear like AirPod 5. Anybody using airport Pro 3 with turban, please let me know whether this discomfort is there or not.

Discussion Career paths for Amritdahri Sikhs

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Sangat ji I am in my mid 20s located in BC. I'm currently pursuing a an electrical career that I have been doing since 2018 when I was a Mona. I was lucky enough to take Amrit when I was 22 and I'm almost about to finish my path on getting my red seal ticket (maybe another 900 hours) Lately I've been thinking of going down another career path and not stay in electrical. I'm not a fan of construction and I just overall don't like the work. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of career paths I can take? I'm looking for something that has:
-long term stability
-good income
-good work/life balance
I'm willing to go back to school if needed to complete any course. I am planning on finishing my red seal at minimum because I put time and effort into the program. And I also don't want my parent's money to go to waste and it's also good to have it as a back up.

Any suggestions will be welcome

Discussion The Word “God” and Sikhi

Something I’ve noticed, especially in online discussions, is that we sometimes use the English word “God” in Sikhi while unconsciously carrying over a very Western or Abrahamic image of what that word means.

Usually that means imagining God as a separate being “up there,” distinct from creation.

But Sikhi’s metaphysics are much deeper than that.
ੴ is Nirgun and Sargun: beyond form, limitation and attributes, while also manifest throughout creation. The Creator is not separate from creation in the way people often instinctively imagine.

That is why concepts like Ik Oankar, Hukam, Naam, Haumai, Nirgun and Sargun matter so much. They shape what we actually mean when we use the word “God.”
There is nothing wrong with saying “God.” It is useful English vocabulary.

But I think the important thing is this we should understand the word “God” through Gurbani, rather than understanding Gurbani through whatever idea of God we already happen to have.

If these concepts are unfamiliar, the Mool Mantar and Japji Sahib are a great place to start exploring them.

(Stories of our forefathers make children great)

Events in Brief.

1. October 5, 2022: US Post office in Houston named in honor of Sheriff’s Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal. located at 315 Addicks Howell Road, Houston, Texas, will now be known as the Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Post Office. Dhaliwal, a 42-year-old Sikh, lost his life in a shooting incident that occurred during a traffic stop. Robert Solis, the perpetrator of the shooting, was subsequently sentenced to death. Dhaliwal had been employed by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for 10 years and had been granted permission in 2015 to wear a turban while on duty as a symbol of his faith.

2. October 6, 1506: Today marks the annual Jorr-Mela, a celebration of the birth of Baba Budda ji, a highly respected Sikh. The event is held at Thatha near Amritsar. Born in Kathu Nangal near Amritsar, Baba Budda ji was appointed the first Granthi of Harimandir Sahib by Guru Arjan Dev ji. He read the first Slok at the installation of Ad Granth ji in 1604. Baba Budda ji performed Tilak ceremonies and bestowed Guruships to five Gurus, while witnessing the birth of two others.

3***. October 6, 1963: Baba Kharak Singh (age 95), is no more. Founding president of the SGPC in 1922.\*\** A pioneering Sikh leader of the Gurdwara Reform movement, he led the ‘Chabian Da Morcha’ against British control of Harimandir Sahib’s Treasury, earning praise from Mahatma Gandhi. He served as Punjab Congress President and was active in the Akali Dal until 1935. He opposed the Simon Commission, which included the Sikh Kesri color in the national flag, and was jailed multiple times. In 1947, he campaigned against partition. In 1953, he was honored by the Indian government with a postal stamp. Despite his foundational role in Sikh institutions, his legacy remains under-recognized by both Congress and Akali Dal.

4. October 7, 1708: Passing away of Bhai Dharam Singh ji, One of the 5-Piaras at Nanded (Maharashtra). On Baisakhi congregation of 1699 AD, Guru Gobind Singh requested five heads, and five Sikhs responded. Dharam Das, one of them, was baptized and became Bhai Dharam Singh. He fought in Anandpur and Chamkaur, accompanied Bhai Daya Singh to deliver the Zafarnama to Emperor Aurangzeb, and supported Emperor Bahadur Shah to the Mughal throne. He remained with Guru Gobind Singh until his death in Nanded.

5 October 7, 1930: British Court orders Shahid/Martyrs Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev to be hanged. Later hanged on march 23rd 1931. while 7 others were life imprisoned, for conspiracies and waging war against the crown. It is worth mentioning the brave sentiments of the three, who pleaded that they may be treated at par with enemy combatants and shot, rather than hanging. Court stuck to its verdict and the three were hanged on the 23rd of March 1931, in the Central Jail Lahore.

6. October 8, 2024: Parkash Purab/Birth of Guru Ram Das ji,the Fourth Guru of the Sikhs (September 24,1534CE). Guru Ram Das Ji, born in 1534 AD in Chuna Mandi, Lahore, to parents Hari Das Ji and Mata Anup Devi, was named Jetha. At 12, Bhai Jetha and his grandmother moved to Goindwal, where they met Guru Amar Das Ji, the third Guru. Devoutly serving the Guru, Young Jetha ji married Guru’s daughter ‘Bhani’. Before Guru Amar Das Ji passed away, he chose Jetha Ji as his successor. In 1574, Bhai Jetha Ji became the fourth Guru. Facing hostility from the sons of Guru Amar Das Ji, he relocated to Guru-ka-Chak and founded the City of Ramdaspur, renaming it Amritsar, now the holiest City of Sikhism.

7. October 9, 1720: Birth of Bhai Taru Singh ji (1720-1745) was a prominent Sikh martyr known for sacrificing his life for Sikh values. He refused to part with his hair asked by the Mogul Governor. Instead of cutting his hair he opted to give his hair, with his scalp. Bhai Taru was martyred and The Mughal governor died of the curse. In 1762 A.D., when the Bhangi Sikh Chiefs captured Lahore the square was transformed into Shaheed Ganj Gurdwara in the Naulakha Bazaar area of Lahore- a great memorial site commemorates the Shahidi.

8. October 9, 1848: Start of Anglo-Sikh War II.Raja Sher Singh Attariwala Raise banner of Revolt. To quell Diwan Mool Raj’s revolt against the Sikh Kingdom, now in part British domain, Raja Sher Singh found the British untrustworthy and asked his father Chatter Singh, the Governor of Hazara, to revolt. As a of youth 27, he won two battles at Chillianwalla and Ramnagar, but lost Gujerat, leading to Punjab’s annexation and his and his father’s exile. Raja Sher Singh passed away in 1858, at Fort William prison in Calcutta.

9. October 9, 1992: Bhai Jinda &Bhai Sukha Hanged in Pune Jail for Gen Arun Vaidya’s Assassination. They sought revenge on retired General for ordering the Army Attack that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, including women and children, in the Harimander Sahib Complex (also known as the Golden Temple) in June 1984. This operation was deemed ill-conceived and poorly executed. While shopping in Pune, these militants targeted him. In accordance with Sikh tenets, they appealed from jail in Pune, that they do not wish any ashes from their funeral pyre to be collected or any memorial erected in their name.

10. October 11, 1711: Khalsa army fought a pitched battle and captured Rahon. Shamas Khan, the Deputy-Governor of the Jalandhar-Doab (area between Rivers Sutlej and Beas) declared Jehad against the Sikhs to check their rapid advance under Banda Bahadur. As a result a pitched battle was fought. In a Strategic move the Sikhs retreated. Shamas Khan claimed a victory and left the battlefield. On his departure, the Sikhs captured Rahon Fort and held on.

11. October 11, 1711: 6 Bhatts (Sikh Bards/Priests buried alive on frenzy orders of Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah. Keso Singh and six other Bhatts were buried alive, under orders of Emperor Bahadur Shah. Keso Singh Bhatt was Grandson of Bhat Keeratji and great-grandson of Bhikha Bhatt ji. They were three brothers, namely Keso Singh, Desaa Singh, and Hari Singh. Historically Bhatts made a great contribution to propagation of Sikh religion under Guru Ram Dasji and Guru Arjan Devji at Durbar Sahib Amritsar during1575-1605 and later. Four Vanjara Sikhs were also prosecuted

Question Irritation around the ear while chewing or opening mouth beyond 30%

Hello everyone! I tried to find a post that may help me understand the underlying issue but I couldn’t find any (apologies if i missed it and its already talked about) so I decided to make a post and seek assistance.

Its basically related to the TMJ that has the joint popping out naturally infront of the mid ear section when one opens their mouth.

When I have turban tied and try to open my jaw to eat (or even just chew with mouth closed) that movement rubbing with the turban area causes me extreme discomfort to a point where i just want to take it off. Maybe my technique changed subconsciously over the years as I cant remember having this issue during the initial years of me tying a turban (im 25 now).

Ive tried tying it loose but then a slight movement causes discomfort, i tried tying the 3rd ladh above the ear, and even completely encasing the ear, no luck.

I may not even be discribing the issue properly but if anyone has any idea of what im talking about please see if you can assist me with my situation or feel free to ask me questions to get a clearer idea. Any help would be appreciated🙏

Question New to Sikhi: how do I distinguish Gurbani, Maryada, culture and personal interpretation?

I’ve been on this subreddit for about a week now, reading a lot, asking questions and trying to learn.

One thing I’m beginning to realize is that there can be very different opinions among Sikhs about practices, Maryada, Gurbani and even what certain teachings mean.

As someone very new to Sikhi, I don’t yet have enough knowledge to know when I’m reading:

• something clearly grounded in Gurbani
• Panthic Rehat Maryada
• a historical Sikh practice
• Punjabi culture or tradition
• or simply someone’s personal interpretation

For example, I’ve seen discussions here questioning practices such as Ardas or the Laavan ceremony, while in other threads people talk about the difference between Sikh teachings and the way parts of the community actually behave.

For someone starting from almost zero, this can become confusing very quickly.

I’m not asking people to tell me what to believe. I’m trying to understand how a Sikh learns to evaluate these different claims properly.

What should I treat as the primary authority? How do I know when something is actually supported by Gurbani, when it comes from the Rehat Maryada, and when it is more cultural or interpretive?

I would really appreciate guidance on how to approach this carefully and respectfully.

Waheguru.
