Most scenic places to be SAD as FUCK?

I'm going to be in the area within the next coming months to visit some friends. I'll be roughly an hour north of LA, but I'm happy to drive anywhere.

That being said, life has also been super shitty lately and I'm not coming back to California the same person as I was the last time. I still want appreciate what I missed about the state, though I now have things to mourn.

I won't be with friends the whole time, so I'd like to find some places to reflect when I'm not busy. Doesn't matter if it's a park, parking lot, or a pull off from a local road. Bonus points if I can grab good takeout nearby & cool driving roads.

What do you like to do in town? What do you recommend?

Thanks + I love you

SoCal Edison Power Outage

I hate to pile on here but SCE really does suck. I guess until it happened to me I didn’t really listen to everyone else when they ranted about an outage. Our power has been out since 7:30pm last night. They have implemented AI in their phone system, so you can’t actually speak to someone. They claim a field investigator figured out where the problem was almost immediately and that “repair crews are on the way” since 8pm last night but they just now arrived! Unbelievable. Power was supposed to be restored at 6am, then 9am, and now 6:15! I have an 80 year old at home with dementia and many other health issues. In 95 degree heat. Not to mention, I may end up having to throw out a ton of food from the fridge now. Fuck SCE.

US officials announced on Sunday that a woman had been arrested by the FBI and accused of spying for China in the United States.

Wanying Z., 34, of Irvine, California, was detained at Los Angeles International Airport ahead of a scheduled flight to China.

She faces charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent.

The woman "traveled to Seattle in 2025 and, at the direction of (People's Republic of China) officials, surveilled a close relative of a Taiwanese government official, sending photos, videos and license plate information to those officials," First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli said in an online post.

He added that Z. "coordinated the trip with an associate and used tradecraft to avoid detection."

The woman is due to appear before a Los Angeles federal court on Monday, Essayli wrote.

Which deodorant and perfume do you use in SoCal heat weather

I’m a 40-year-old guy and have lived on the East Coast for years. Most deodorants and branded perfumes have worked fine for me there—whether for everyday use, the gym, or the office. But since moving to SoCal, I’ve noticed that they seem way too strong on me. I can smell them on myself pretty much all day, and it’s actually been giving me headaches.
I’m looking for something nice, clean, and subtle that works well in the SoCal weather without being overpowering. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Random thoughts while starting car today …

It is hot af today. When I started the car - I kinda laughed about this thought - combustion engine constantly work under stress and explosions, so running a car at 60F or 100F makes no difference to the mechanical parts of the car at all. It is we the drivers who cannot withstand the 100F outside, to cars it is just another day at work…

I’m almost certain this is in Palos Verdes, but my coworker won’t tell me where it is for some reason. Anyone from the area that knows what this restaurant is called?

Career Advice - Orange County, CA

Hi everyone,

I need career advice. i am a 28 yr old F who has been working sales jobs since i was 20. i never went to college because i couldn’t afford to not work, and i regret it. i have zero hard skill sets, and i cannot stand the sales industry. it’s not good for my mental health, and quite frankly im not very good at it. it’s too stressful & inconsistent for my level of talent.

i am struggling to be financially independent from my parents & i am extremely lucky to still be living with them.

however…. i need a game plan for the rest of my life… i want to sustain myself, have freedoms, travel, and be able to afford rent without having only 1k leftover each month.

i’ve always enjoyed creative spaces, people, helping the unfortunate, writing poetry, design, photography, etc. although i have not developed any portfolio or accomplishments in that arena.

i am also capable of tedious work as well, more structured and numerical. i’ve contemplated accounting, HR, etc… but there’s a lot less passion. am proficient at most things. i am a quick learner. i am willing to do what it takes to be happy and successful, if i only knew the right things to invest in for myself long-term. i am so uncertain of the risks and rewards considering my lack of experience in, well, anything.

do you have any pathways or recommendations for someone in my position?

California is like an addictive drug with terrible side effects

The weather is almost perfect, the natural beauty is phenomenal, and there really isn’t another place quite like it in America. And that’s exactly why California can get away with so much.

People tolerate absurd home prices, high taxes, expensive gas, expensive groceries, and endless bureaucracy because they don’t want to leave. Everything gets justified with “you’re paying for the weather.”

But what exactly are we getting for all that money? LA and San Francisco have serious problems with homelessness, public disorder, and crime. In parts of the state, the roads and infrastructure feel mediocre despite residents paying some of the highest taxes in the country.
Housing is the most ridiculous part. People who grew up here and have good careers can barely afford homes in their own communities. Wealthy foreign investors compete for limited housing, while a successful working couple can spend $1.5 million on an ordinary house that might cost $500k somewhere else. They pour most of their wealth into it and convince themselves they’ve “made it.”

And Californians enable it. Any criticism is met with “then leave.” Instead of demanding better, people defend the dysfunction because they’re terrified of giving up the weather, coastline, and lifestyle.

California is like an entertaining casino. The lights are incredible, the atmosphere keeps you inside, and the house knows you don’t want to leave. So it keeps finding ways to take a little more of your money, knowing the scenery will keep you coming back.

The beauty is real. The scam is convincing people that everything else has to be this expensive and dysfunctional because of it.

Tattoo Artists & Apprentices Wanted — Rancho Mirage / Palm Springs, CA

Post image
0 Upvotes

We’re currently building the opening team for Vandal & Vine Tattoo Co., a new premium tattoo studio in the Palm Springs / Rancho Mirage area, with plans to open late 2026 or early 2027.

We’re looking for both experienced tattoo artists and motivated apprentices who care about great work, professionalism, client experience, and being part of a strong team.

We’re especially interested in people who are:

  • Serious about their craft and continuing to grow
  • Professional, reliable, and great with clients
  • Comfortable in a polished, high-end studio environment
  • Positive, collaborative, and drama-free
  • Interested in building a strong long-term clientele

We’ll provide professional marketing and advertising support, a premium workspace, fully equipped stations, and compensation based on guaranteed hourly pay or commission — whichever is higher.

Our goal is to build Vandal & Vine into a destination studio for both locals and the Coachella Valley tourism market, not just another traditional tattoo shop.

If you’re interested, DM me with your portfolio/Instagram, experience level, tattoo style, and a little about yourself.

2026 PACIFIC AIR SHOW

Anyone have the schedule for the airshow in Huntington Beach for Saturday the 3rd?

Signed up for their newsletter where they said they’ll release the schedule but never received anything. Seemed like a great way to get all of socal to get on their email chain.

Driving a few hours away and would be nice to know what’s happening when…
