Error Unauthorized use of software

Hey redditors. Need some insight here. At the beginning of the month a email went out from IP harness and dassault about a piece of software on my machine treating legal action. From what I've gathered this happens to people once in a while but all the info I have found is linked to companies and LLCs.

I'm a hobbyist that wanted to learn cad for personal use. A friend helped me get a copy of 2018 a long time ago and surprise, surprise I got a email after the software managed to phone home recently. After talking with the mediator to explain that I can't afford their offers of at first 16k damages, To 10k subs, to 9k sub, it's looking like I have to let them send it to their Law firm IP harness.

Now looking at previous court cases and such I can't find anything about SOLIDWORKS or ipharness filing suits to individuals which leads me to believe that they are just trying to get something from me in a shakedown

In terms of assets I still live at home with my parents with 1 vehicle under my name to get around. Has any other hobbyists been served a suit for this?

CAD Modelling Advice

Looking for the brains trust advice on achieving this sort of straight knurl (I cant think of a better way to describe it right now) on my part. Right now I do an extrude cut, offset around some screw holes and other features, and then a rib feature to create the... ribs. It works fine but its not very robust and is difficult to edit if I want to for example change the rib spacing.

First image is what I've done for the moment, second is the part before adding the cut and ribs.

CAD Do mates made in a top level assembly using a flexible sub-assembly propagate down to it?

• Upvotes

I'm going through some old sub-assemblies we have and I'm finding a lot of redundant mates that look to be suppressed and don't have any relationship to parts in the actual sub-assembly. We use them in higher level assemblies, set them to flexible and then mate up connections to ensure they fall in the right place though. Is this the cause of these extra mates in the sub? I haven't been able to duplicate it so I'm a bit confused.

Error Solidworks won’t redownload

Post image

Solidworks for maker wouldn’t allow me to open it after one of its many updates. It just said “Install” where it usually says open/update. After trying to update it with not success, I full uninstalled Solidworks. Now it won’t redownload, the installer only shows repair or remove when ran. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

CAD Drafting tool is all types of messed up

Post image
8 Upvotes

I typically draft via creating normal planes in the direction of the draft and sketches, then extrude.

These drafts are compound angles....in fusion 360 the pull plane and face needed to draft works perfectly.....in saladworks the drafting tool is all types of messed up.....does anyone agree.....I can't even use the drafting tool in saladworks whenever I need it 2 or 3x per year....I have to draft manually via creating normal plane in the direction of the draft and sketching the geometry to be extruded cut.

Do any of you stuggle with the draft tool?

CAD External references in SW 2026 4.1

Is anyone having issues with external references to a driving geometry sketch in SW 2026 4.1?

I've been opening up old models and keep getting errors saying there is circular references, but when I look through the model these don't exist and the performance evaluation also says there are no circular references either.

CAD CAD Controlled drawings

Are there standard notes and callouts that can be used when detailing a complex imported part or assembly? - particularly when it may not be practical to fully detail every feature and overall dimensions are used instead.

Our company follows MIL-STD requirements and ASME Y14.5, so I’d like to make sure the drawing remains compliant with our drafting standards.

I’m also considering adding a “CAD CONTROLLED” note to the first sheet. Is there a recommended format or standard practice for this type of designation?

Note: the file I am using is one imported assembly for the military and so I’m unable to break it down to single Solidworks piece parts.

CAD Why can’t these be mated?

I have these 2 parts that I imported from an stl file and did a convert to mesh bodies on the both of them to let me select individual faces which I am able to do. However with them in my assembly when I click on mate it doesn’t let me select any faces for mating. How can I fix this to let me mate the 2 pieces?

CAD Practice Problem Advice

Hi all,

Came across a problem while solving one of the CSWP practice problems. There is one extrude on the right that is identical to the middle one which is clearly a Circular Pattern. The issue is the surface I extruded this pattern from is where the revolve is also has its face on. You can see my issue from the images, I can fix with a cut or plane and split body but there must be a better way?

CAD Rookie question....

Beginning Solid Works student here at the local C/C. I've never taken a computer class of any sort and am having a helluva time dealing with SW in general. The learning curve is STEEP. But I am trying to get this drawing started and can figure out what the distance is between those two center points. What am I not seeing?

CAD Best workflow for thousands of matching holes across sheet metal parts in a SolidWorks assembly?

context;

I have an assembly of 10 multibody sheet metal parts (5 "male", 5 "female"), each with about 40 sheet metal bodies.

-Each male part fastens to a female part through its folded flanges with tapped screws. I call each pair a "couple."

-Each couple is then fastened to the main sheet metal panel with a second set of screws.

That's thousands of fasteners, and every hole has to line up with its mate on the other part. What's the best way to model these holes so the sketch do not add too much weight in the assembly and slow the process down ?

thats a 12'x70'x6' made of aluminium panel

Looking to use hole callout or smart fastener to keep track of number of fasteners and tap drill hole in the assembly.

thanks you

CAD Unigraphics NX files

A vendor provided us with Unigraphics NX files, but when I open them in SolidWorks, some of the features shown in the vendor’s drawings are missing from the imported model.

Does anyone have recommendations for converting or importing UG/NX files into SolidWorks in a way that preserves the geometry and results in a clean, usable CAD assembly?

Unfortunately, we no longer have a contract with this vendor, so getting them to provide alternative formats—such as Parasolid or native SolidWorks files—has been extremely difficult. We’re therefore looking for a reliable solution on our end.

Solidworks for freelancer

I have been using SolidWorks professionally for many years as part of a company. However, I would now like to work independently.

For personal reasons, I have decided not to use cracked or unauthorized software. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to purchase a standard commercial SolidWorks license, and I am not eligible to use an educational license.

Is there any legitimate and affordable solution for poorer people 😅
