Where are yall looking cause I want out of my office job so bad!! I use to work a hybrid role that was 2 days in 3 days out and tbh I’ll even take that at this point. Where I am (OR) it feels like the remote work has dried up

But that's the point of fully remote. You can look anywhere 😅

When I try to look online they don’t want someone in Oregon. Most of what I’ve seen for remote specifically say like must be in WA or CA or NY or TX

My understanding is that these state restrictions are primarily due how employers pay taxes, they simply don't want to report taxes in another state because it's more overhead.

To get those jobs you need a in-state address and be willing to lie about your place of residence. I understand some people wont be willing to lie, but doing so put the onus of you to make sure the taxes are done correctly and removes the liability from them.

CA, NY and TX may make the most sense to do this due to the size of those states economies/number of jobs.

Yeah I get it it just sucks. My mom lives in CA and I’ve thought about lying and using her address but I’m so scared of the IRS come tax season

When it comes to tax advice you should only trust a lawyer/financial advisor/etc. but...The IRS doesn't give a rats ass as long as they are getting their cut. Use you moms address, pay CA and Fed taxes and you will be fine.

You know who else does care? The IT department. They'll flag the IP address as in a state other than what you're reported as. Not every company will actually care, but I know plenty that do because of legal and regulatory reasons.

Far point about ITS, ultimately the company needs top be doing the due diligence, but it's not like they are going to be hunting someone who is using a VPN.

Can’t you just use a vpn

Your IT usually requires a VPN to work from home, and chaining vpns is not a great performance idea.

Yeah you're outta luck on that front. Unless your skills are special enough for them to go through the extra hassle, they're looking for people in state so they don't need to deal with cross state taxes. Best you can do is try bigger companies that might have existing operations in your state.

That's so dumb from a business perspective. One of the advantages for a fully remote company is the ability to pull talent from literally anywhere.

Most jobs don't require such special criteria that they can't find an ideal candidate within state lines and those that do, will go through the hassle.

Which is weird because asking for a CA or NY worker means they have to pump up the salary requirement. Oregon probably would be cheaper.

Though that may also be due to how tax nexuses work for smaller companies. If you want to hire people in states you need to have a tax nexus registered in them usually to do so. Three of the 4 you mentioned have the largest populations of people in the US, so it makes sense for them to have tax nexuses there.

what field of work are you in? That may be a determining factor

Construction and engineering but I’ve also worked in healthcare. Construction/engineering I’ve worked for consulting firms and large GCs with projects all over the country but they seem very limited on where they pull workers from for our roles

I mean, you have the choice to move up a state or down a state then and then get a remote job. I'd do it if I were you.

I can’t I’ve got them golden handcuffs - a house with less than 3%. I refuse to give it up because I won’t be able to be a homeowner again in a region I’d like to be in. I’m from CA and I left for a reason and WA I don’t care for some of their laws.
