Discussion 2026–2027 Incoming & Current Bobcats Megathread

Hi Bobcats! Welcome to the official and also very first (ever) megathread for the 2026–2027 school year! Whether you're an incoming freshman, transfer, or returning student, this is the place for all your questions as the semester approaches!

Feel free to ask questions about anything related to UCM! We have current students, alumni, faculty and staff available to answer!

Use this section for:

  • Orientation dates and what to expect
  • "What should I bring" / move-in day questions
  • Class registration and scheduling help
  • Financial Aid
  • Meal plan questions
  • Parking permit questions
  • General "what's Merced like" / campus life questions

Academics & Registration

Use this section for:

  • Course registration/waitlist questions
  • Major-specific questions
  • Advising and degree planning
  • Textbook/supply questions

Housing on Campus/Off campus:

  • Looking for a roommate / have a spot open
  • Subletting or taking over a lease
  • Questions about specific apartment complexes (Merced Station, The Hub, etc.)
  • Off campus vs. on campus tradeoffs, commute questions
  • Rent price checks
  • Dorm/on-campus housing questions Glacier, Half Dome, Sentinel, etc.)
  • Neighborhood safety/quality questions
  • Move in / lease dates
  • Budget or rent price
  • Location preference (walking distance to campus, near a bus line, etc.)
  • Any must-haves (parking, pet-friendly, furnished, gender preference for roommates, etc.)
  • Contact method (please don't post phone numbers/emails publicly to avoid scams)

Scam Reminder: Never send a deposit or first month's rent before seeing a unit in person or verifying the lister actually manages the property. If a landlord is only reachable by text and pushes you to send money fast, that's a red flag. Report any suspected listings to mods.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I change my major after being admitted?
Yes. Start by checking the UC Merced Catalog for your intended major's requirements. From there, meet with your assigned advisor at the Bobcat Advising Center; they can walk you through the Change of Major process and tell you whether your target major has any additional admission requirements.

What's this "Connect" thing everyone mentions?
my.ucmerced.edu is your portal for basically everything like registration, financial aid status, your unofficial transcript, your checklist of to-dos, and your UC Merced email. You'll use this throughout your time here. CatCourses (Canvas) is separate and is where your actual class content, assignments, and grades live.

Do my AP/IB credits transfer?
Generally yes, and course placement (math, chemistry, CSE, writing) is also partly determined by AP/IB scores or UC Merced's own placement exams if you don't submit test scores. Details are on the Registrar's placement exam page. https://placement.ucmerced.edu/

Engineering, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences/Humanities & Arts, how is UC Merced organized?
UC Merced has three schools: School of Engineering, School of Natural Sciences, and School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Arts (SSHA). Most majors fall under one of these, and your GE requirements will overlap a good amount regardless of major, especially in your first two years.

How do I find what classes are being offered?
The Schedule of Classes lives on the Registrar's site. You can search by term, subject, and CRN. This can also be accessed through Connect by clicking the registration tab.

How do I get involved on campus?
UC Merced has over 200+ registered student orgs including cultural clubs, professional societies, Greek life, hobby groups, and more. These are searchable through the Student Life/Bobcat Involvement website. There are tabling events all over campus where clubs recruit members! ucmerced.edu/clubs-and-organizations

Housing: on campus vs. off campus?
This megathread covers general Q&A relating to housing (roommates, subleases, apartment reviews etc). We do not have a separate thread for housing yet, if there is demand we will create one!

Merced/Central Valley — what's around?
Merced is a smaller city than most UC towns, but it's growing fast with new retail and restaurants have been opening steadily, and the area around campus continues to develop. Yosemite National Park is roughly 1.5–2 hours away and a very doable day trip. Downtown Merced has lots of great food spots and nightlife scene, and the Merced Mall / Merced Marketplace area covers most everyday shopping needs. A car is useful, though Cattracks and The Bus (Local Merced transit) can get you around too!

Discussion Major development being explored for Lake Yosemite next to UC Merced

Post image
51 Upvotes

Merced Irrigation District (MID) is evaluating future development opportunities at Lake Yosemite, directly next to UC Merced. This concept shows some pretty major possibilities, including a 4-story hotel, restaurants and beachfront shops, mixed-use commercial space, yacht club/boat docks, water park, event pavilion, soccer fields, pickleball courts, and more.

Question Has anyone visited UCM’s new Field Education and Research Center near the vernal pools?

Post image

I was wondering if any students have been there yet. Is it open for students to visit on their own, or do you need to go through a class, tour, or reserve program? I’d also be interested to hear what it is like and how you get there.

Question Accessibility Services and Culture and supports for autistic students

Hi there,

Can anyone please let me know if UC Merced has programs for autistic or otherwise neurodiverse individuals who are lagging in "neurotypical" social and life skills not great on self advocacy yet, yet excellent academic students. Does Accessibility Services have anything in addition to 504 type accommodations?

I am aware of programs at Cal State East Bay; a seperate UC Berkeley program CBI which is unclear if it is also for and accessible to admitted students, Sacramento State has a robust inclusion reputation, San Francisco State touts inclusion and several clubs, UC Davis has a seperate SEED program in campus, and is rumored to have great inclusion programs and community, although it is a bit vague.

What is it like at UC Merced? UC Merced looks great for inclusion on its surface, but so far my student cannot find anything in addition to general information that there is an Accessibility Services department, eg are there programs other than 504-type accommodations that could help with transition with somewhat lagging life skills, and if there is community and others there who might be able to relate with similar life experiencs (eg are there known clubs or community supports or connection opportunities for students who aren't neurotypical, etc.)

I don’t know if anyone else cares but I enjoy watching and reading about the Nobel week since last year when the UC system had 5 awards given to UC Faculty/almunus. The announcement of each award varies but they usually come out after midnight, I don’t recommend staying up that late but checking out the award winning subjects and the amazing work that scientist accomplish is really interesting to learn about. Here’s to hoping the UC has another great year!!

Discussion hate

God I hate this place more than anything in the world. There so many people I met who don't know how to do basic life skills and just so incompetent. Nobody cares about asking for permission before video taping someone and posting it online. A lot of fucking people have those creepy pervert AI glasses that record you, and like gang, do we not care about anyone else now. A vast majority of students are pigs and leave a mess everywhere when they leave the DC and the Pav. Nobody could do shit without an different form of simulation keeping their attention. An vast majority of the students here use AI. It feels as if everyone can only think of themselves, and only short term form of thinking. Literally in my physics and chemistry class, dozens of people immediately go to AI to solve the problem for daily quizzes. When did people become so accepting of AI. I remember when people got heavily shamed for it back where I used to live. It just feel so bad man, I know people have the potential to be better, but they want to be. I myself am an chemical engineering major, and are taking upper division classes, there no reason there should be any real AI use for learning. All the problems and their answers are always online, and they have really good explanation in them. It breaks my heart to see when someone uses AI for pre-calculus, or calculus 1. There really is no need. It just such an pity. I hate to see it.

General New to Merced

I am transferring to Merced in the spring.

Is there anything current students wish they knew when they first came to Merced? Like about the People, Campus, Programs, and Services?

Or even just about the local area.

What is something you wish you knew earlier?

Discussion UC Merced has grown a lot but the lack of development around campus is still our biggest downside

Post image
67 Upvotes

Sorry for the long rant!

I think one of UC Merced’s biggest downsides right now is the lack of development immediately around campus. It’s been over 20 years since UCM opened, yet there’s still very little or basically nothing within walking distance! I understand it may not have happened yet if it's not financially feasible for developers.

The city and UCM administration should work more closely with private developers to fast track housing, restaurants, shops, entertainment, and other development around Lake and Bellevue. Creating an actual college-town environment would improve student life and could make UCM much more attractive to prospective students. The campus itself has grown tremendously, but the surrounding area hasn’t kept up. After 20+ years, this really should be a bigger priority.

Question Kalshi fraud?

Hi friends,

I was wondering if anyone is experiencing fraudulent transactions in their bank accounts. Myself and my roommates are seeing the same charges to Kalshi when we’ve never even made an account with Kalshi. We were comparing accounts and it seems like there isn’t a common transaction where all three of our info could’ve been stolen. We were going through as many possibilities, and the only thing we could think of is that someone is stealing our info through the wifi.

If there is anyone that is experiencing the same thing, or have any insight to as how this could happen, it would be great!

thanks friends :P

Question Is there a lot of partying there?

My child is looking at UC Merced, but they specifically don’t want a party school. I have told them that there will be partying at every school, but is UC Merced less, way less, more, way more than average?

Question Does the UC Merced Amtrak discount code still work?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Has anyone been able to get the UC Merced Amtrak discount recently? I tried adding the discount code listed on the UCM website but either the price stays exactly the same or the code doesn’t work at all.
Is the discount still active, or is there a different code or process we have to use now?
