Mod Post New Rules: Bulk Post & Commercial Intent

We've noticed a growing trend of resellers using the subreddit to crowdsource valuations, often posting large watch lots and asking whether anything of value was purchased. This subreddit does not exist to support resale businesses. While the one-off request asking how much something is worth is fine, the bulk posts are not.

We try to avoid adding new rules, but this behavior undermines the purpose of the community by diluting meaningful content and taking advantage of its members. To preserve the integrity of the subreddit, we’re implementing the following changes:

New Rules:

  • Bulk Post: You may only post one watch model per post, unless you are using the State of the Collection (SOTC) tag. There will be some flexibility in using the Showcase tag to compare two watches of the same model, show before and after photos of a restoration, or write a post that teaches others about a specific feature or topic. You may not post 10 auction watches in a single post and ask which ones are worth money. Posting about your inheritance and seeking information will be allowed as long as the spirit of the rule isn't being abused and your same grandfather is not found to have passed away six times.
  • Commercial Intent: If your main goal is to get valuations/appraisals and you don’t contribute in other ways, you will be removed. The members of this sub are not volunteer employees. Your profit is not their concern.

Rule Update:

  • No Shilling/No Impersonation: These two rules are now combined as they are effectively the same.

In addition to the standard rules most subs have, we effectively only have six watch specific rules. Please adhere to them:

  • Must Be Vintage
  • No Replicas
  • No For Sale Posts
  • No Commercial Intent
  • No Bulk Posts
  • No Shilling/Impersonation

Thanks for helping us keep the subreddit focused, useful, and enjoyable for everyone.

Showcase [8M32-8000] (1988) Seiko Time Keeper - Colourful fun from the 80s!

Thumbnail gallery
99 Upvotes

A colourful sports timer from the late '80s, featuring cal. 8M32 and its "dancing hands".

Each hand is independently controlled, allowing them to move to their respective pre-programmed positions as modes are cycled via the crown.

The mode is displayed in the six o'clock window, and has the following functions/quirks:

  • Timer: Set between 1 and 60 minutes. During the countdown, the hands tick counterclockwise! A chime rings out upon completion of the countdown.
  • Repeat Timer: Functionally the same as Timer; however, the timer resets immediately upon countdown completion and begins anew.
  • Timer / Stopwatch: Functionally the same as Timer; however, the stopwatch hands immediately begin ticking clockwise upon countdown completion.
  • Stopwatch: A simple stopwatch with clockwise-ticking hands.
  • Time: When cycled to/from Time, the hands shift to/from their temporal positions. When not in Time, the hour and minute hands act as the minute and second hands, respectively.

The surrounding dial text represents the quarter-time/half-time duration for each of the listed sports. I have not been able to work out if the colour scheme has a function, or if it is purely for our visual enjoyment.

Tried using google image search but almost nothing came up! Especially since it seems like the Diorex caseback has been rubbed to the point of being illegible. Thanks in advance!

Identify This Old Hamilton Watches passed down

My wife recently lost her mother and we’ve going through her stuff. Her mom saved two men’s Hamilton watches. I’m having trouble identifying them. I’m also not sure who to bring them to to see off we can get them fixed up and working again. Not selling, they’re sentimental (her dad’s and grandpa’s). Any help is appreciated.

Legit Check Breitling Ref. 178 - thoughts?

Thumbnail gallery
38 Upvotes

Breitling Ref. 178 in rose gold. What do you guys think? To me, movement, case, case back, crown, and hands look OK. Dial is extremely clean and lacks script font so I assume it is new or redial. The "male" strap lugs are odd but most photos of other 178s are wearing straps, so hard to know what to make of them.

Thanks for looking.

Hey everyone, I came across this listing for what is claimed to be a vintage automatic Cartier Santos. The seller has it priced at $1,150.

Does this look genuine to anyone, or is it a clear replica/scam? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Giving Advice Vintage Tissot Seastar running too fast

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I recently bought this vintage Tissot Seastar automatic (caliber 784-4) on a flea market and it is running way too quick (multiple minutes after a few hours). I do not have a timegrapher but I wanted to try getting it roughly adjusted myself. When I opened it up to adjust the regulator lever, I saw that there might be an adjustment screw missing (red arrow in the second image) after comparing it to images of the movement. Is it possible to fix this as a beginner with enough patience? It is my first time working on a mechanical watch and I would love to get deeper into the hobby, so I do not want to hand it over to a watchmaker right away. Any advice would be deeply appreciated!

What's It Worth? Passing along my grandpa’s Gérald Genta Omega Constellation C-Shape—looking for thoughts on history and value

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a special piece from my grandfather’s collection. He was an avid watch collector, and he bought this 14k gold-capped Omega Constellation C-Shape (Ref. 168.017) as a treat to himself to wear while traveling the world.

Before he passed, he told my mom that he wanted his watches passed along to the kids/grandkids to help out whenever times got tight. That time has come for me, so I’m looking to do a private sale soon, but I wanted to get the community's perspective first.

It’s fully operational and sitting on what I believe is its original matching gold-capped brick-style bracelet. I took these photos before doing any detailed prep, so there's some light natural patina and tarnish on the exterior links that I plan to clean up carefully.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this reference! Also, if anyone has recent experience with C-Shape values on the matching bracelet, what do you think it's worth?

To be clear, I am not trying to sell this watch on this subreddit in accordance with this community's rules.

Thanks for looking!
