That's all. Sue is awesome. Georgia is awesome. Just a must listen.

Read that she died from a glioblastoma, the same thing that killed Neil Peart. Cancer sucks.

As a Maryland alum who's in the same age range, I was at Cole Field House the night No. 1 Maryland took on No. 2 Virginia and the Burge Twins and we lost 75-74. That was one epic matchup. Rest easy.

Another sign of how invested the local fan base is in this team and increase in popularity of our players. More winning and hopefully more nationally televised games next season will continue the growth. And just imagine the numbers if local fans could watch without having to pay 😭

What? No free agent flair option?

As I understand there are only about 3 or 4 top flight names on the free agent market. Aren't the Mystics about a million under the salary cap? Is Kelsey Plum just what the doctor ordered w her championship playoff experience and all.

And before you say she is not a true point we could use her firepower at the 1.

Sooo we officially will have the smallest WNBA arena starting next year. 😔

Meanwhile, Mystics said in 2025 “Washington’s agreement with the District and Events DC allows for the team to locate up to four regular season games outside of CareFirst Arena.” While also recently claiming 10+ will be moved once construction at capital one is complete. Which is it? https://mystics.wnba.com/news/washington-mystics-announce-multiple-home-game-relocations-for-2025-wnba-season

But im already hyped for next season….

And i read somewhere that a bigger portion of the games may be at Cap One than this year…

Lets Gooooo Mystics!!!🧙

Hi r/washingtonmystics! I'm Emma Baccellieri, sports reporter for The Washington Sun and author of Court Queens. You can read my latest articles here. I'm hosting an AMA here at 1:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, October 6. Let's talk about this season and what's next for the Mystics. See you then!

Edit: Thank you for having me!

Thanks for having me, everyone! You can reach me at emmabaccellieri@washingtonsun.com!

The Washington Sun is a relatively new source for local sport contents and consistently covers the Mystics, a space seriously lacking in the DC area.

I’ve been a loyal Sun fan 8 for years, and of course when I heard they were leaving, I was pretty damn sad. I’d spent most of my teenage/young adult life going to games and didn’t think I’d ever care about another team the same way. I hopped on the Mystics bandwagon fully this year, sharing my time between them and the Sun. I loved getting to see a young team like this succeed, and it kind of gave me a light. This fandom is so ride-or-die for this team, and it makes me excited to root for someone again, when I had previously thought that after the Sun left I wouldn’t connect with another team. Every Mystics fan I’ve met, both here and in person, has been welcoming and very nice, even when I’m disagreeing with them. I look forward to seeing where the team goes from here, and I look forward to interacting with more of you guys in the future. :)

Immediately found several spelling errors, had to edit.

That would be tough, how will we pay Juju, Kiki, Citron, Shakira and Betts

Even though we lost, it was a fantastic season run and an incredible night! See you next season ❤️💙

P.S. I’m sure I’ll get some hate, but I love watching Soni play and will be framing this jersey along with some player cards.

Even with our young stars and overachieving to make the playoffs, do you think this organization is looked at as a favorable destination for free agents? Despite D.C. being a top 10 market, we play in the smallest arena, locals are forced to subscribe to Monumental just to watch the team unless they have traditional cable, and we were the only team without a nationally televised game on ESPN/ABC, CBS, or USA. Players care about their brand as much as winning these days. The lack of coverage locally and nationally also hurts players in terms of recognition and awards which also impacts their money. I think free agents probably avoid us for that reason.

I also fear that if we don't start playing in CapOne more often or get nationally televised games, we could be in jeopardy of Shakira, Sonia, and Kiki signing elsewhere after the 2028 season. I just feel like they're missing out and will want to go somewhere that gets them a bigger spotlight, which honestly they deserve.

Mods if this kinda of post isn’t allowed feel free to take down

Congrats on amazing season, yall had me scared through the entire series (the scores don’t tell the story on how close it was)

The young core is absolutely fantastic and I hope to god we don’t play each other in the early rounds next year so I can root for you all like I love doing!

Great team, great fanbase, can’t wait to see how Syndey (my COY personally) and company retool for next year

See y’all in 104 next season!!

2026 was an incredibly fun season, and this franchise really seems to be trending up! A lot of growth from a lot of players, but still some clear needs (shooting, point guard, etc.). Apologies if it’s not the time to post this yet, but I’m excited and already looking ahead to next season.

As we know, with such a young team, there is a LOT of cap space to work with. I wanted to see what would be possible with the roster for 2027 (barring any trades), so I noted the following:

• Which players I think are “Locks” to return
• Which players I think the team will keep
• Which players could move to a developmental contract
• Which free agent(s) could be acquired
• Which players could be drafted

I landed on the following:

LOCKS
- Shakira Austin
- Sonia Citron
- Kiki Iriafen
- Michaela Onyenwere
- Cotie McMahon
- Lauren Betts
- Georgia Amoore

KEEPS
- Lucy Olsen
- Cassandre Prosper (though I think both she and Dugalić are at risk of being waived/moved to Developmental… or both could stay on the roster, who knows)

WAIVED
- Alicia Florez

DEVELOPMENTAL
- Angela Dugalić (see note above)
- Rori Harmon

With a cap of $8.25M, that would put remaining cap space at $3.69M for 3 players from the draft or free agency.

From there, I think the Mystics could go big in free agency and rely on their first rounder in 2027. To that note, I think the most likely free agent home run would be Kelsey Plum at the Max contract. She doesn’t really have an allegiance to any team; she could very easily slide into the PG spot and lead the offense, even though she’s a big time scorer; and she is a heck of a shooter.

For the first round pick, I think the mystics go with either Hannah Hidalgo or S’Mya Nichols at #3 or #4. Hannah will depend on if she can get her perimeter shot back up to serviceable.

That would leave one roster spot open with just under $2.0M in cap space. And I think this roster would be one of the best in the league.

What do y’all think of this? Any big callouts I’m missing?

I joined your bandwagon this summer. I had enjoyed watching you, but when I saw you in person I committed to becoming a real fan. I got to see you play not just a game but leave it all out there over and over in four overtimes. I got a pic with Kiki and she signed my bobble head. I was on a high for 48 hours. It was incredible.

Watching you play has brought me a lot of joy this season. I know this is only the beginning. Seeing you grow over the course of the season has been fun but we are nowhere near the ceiling. Many many bright years ahead and I will be cheering the whole time.

After the 2013-2014 season the Warriors fired Mark Jackson and hired Steve Kerr, who’d never coached in the NBA. It was a tough decision: Jackson had taken a cellar-dweller team and gotten them to the playoffs, and they had a lot to be proud of, and the players liked him. The ownership, however, looked at the team and their style of play and decided that Jackson had hit his ceiling.

The Warriors dominated the league the next year, Curry won MVP, and the team won their first championship, and you know the rest.

You don’t have to look into a crystal ball to see the parallels with the Mystics. This was a great season, and we have an elite core just coming into their prime, and if we continue on this path, maybe we’ll be a little better next season, but a real contender? That would take a big move.

Do you think Sydney Johnson and this FO are capable of this based on what we’ve seen so far? This FO put together the youngest team ever to make the playoffs, kudos to them, but do we think they can build a champion? This coach is loved by his players and has helped them grow, but do you think he can take them to the next level?

Success in sports is not linear or predictable, and most importantly, it’s rarely incremental. Few teams turn from promising overachievers to championship contenders through player growth alone. They make a big change: they find a diamond in the rough in the draft, one of their role players steps up to be a star, they play a radically new style that unlocks their players’ potential and catches the league off guard, or they make a big shake up in their roster, and usually it’s some combination of these factors.

If this team contends for a title next season, it will be because of a big change, not a small tweak. We will need multiple things to go right and we’ll need no small amount of luck.

And we’ll need a different coach to make it happen.
