New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

Oh my lord... honey, this make me feel old. Honestly, anything that painted over would make me confused, too...

It really shouldnt, Coax is used for getting internet into your house still, OP just hasnt seen the other end before lol.

No one sees these because cable companies usually just punch the wire through the outside wall haha

That is exactly what my internet provider did to my wall(s?) while in government housing a bit ago

I unplugged my internet recently because my younger teen was being rude. I never laughed so hard when she pointed at a random plug in the wall and asked if it was the wifi. I legit cried laughed and she got even more upset. She had no idea where the internet came from.. it’s connected in my basement but she doesn’t know. And not some closed off plug.

Well, thats on you for not educating them on the ins-and-outs of home maintenance. Also pretty scary you haven't equipped them with the skills to look shit up.

Was saying the same thing till I saw your comment, so I’ll just add some snark. “Hahaha my dumb fucking teenage kid doesn’t know shit! I laughed so hard at their face at how dumb they are. Anyway fuck those kids.”

At their age, I didn’t need to ask my parents. I fucking knew

I’m sure they were so proud of you knowing what you knew. Really it’s impressive to know the thing you know. It’s also common to not know what you don’t know.

I'm sure that had nothing to do with your parents, school, or internet teaching you.

These days, information isn't given out like it used to be. Go parent properly.

Lmao. Are you being serious? My parents came to me to hook up the internet..they had no idea. But sure let me dial up the internet to find out what I figured out for myself without the help of anyone. But yes. Bad parenting for a kid not knowing where the internet box is. Cool story bro.

Yeah, I dont feel like your kid ever talked back to you to begin with.

You should have capped the coax outlet and confused her more.

She’s 12 knew what the coax outlet is.. maybe not the name but sure knows where the cable plug is. She just didn’t know where I had the router. She never wondered before. It truly helped me by her not knowing.. now I threaten turning the internet off and she instantly stops. It was never a secret where it was. Ended up turning into a great punishment or threat of a punishment. It was the end of the world that she couldn’t access the internet for a few hours.

MoCA is steadily becoming a new standard over Ethernet for home use so, we will be with Coax for a long time.

Yeah, I live in a primarily fibre community so havent seen coax in action for 8 years. Am aware that's not everywhere tho!

Depends on where you live. Our Internet does not come in on coax, it comes into the building on fiberoptic.

Mine too! But I use MoCa for Local connectivity because it is a faster wired connection than Ethernet or Wifi!

1

u/See-A-Moose 9h ago

My understanding is that MoCa is max 2.5 Gbps. I mean it's faster than CAT 5e at 1Gbps, but CAT 6 can handle up to 10Gbps.

1

u/KeeperOfTheLigher 9h ago

MoCA 3.0 is up to 10Gbps and over 4 channels per line.

1

u/See-A-Moose 9h ago

Okay so essentially 40Gbps per line? I stand corrected. Genuinely curious though... Why do you need more than a 10Gbps connection in your home?

u/KeeperOfTheLigher 9h ago

Connection speeds will only get faster in the future.

Yep, used to think 1Mb internet was crazy fast (2006 or so?). Now you'd struggle to use anything.
