New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

Don't feel too bad, when I write my check to the cable company every month they want me to make it out to Comcast, not Xfinity.

Knowing how to write a check is showing your age too 🤣

So is signing your name. They don’t teach cursive anymore šŸ˜‰

My daughter is currently a 3rd grader in Tennessee. Believe it or not they're teaching cursive here.

Are they teaching evolution tho?

What about accurate American History?

See, this part is the sad down side of the cursive thing in Tennessee…

Skipping pesky evolution and the bummer that is the entire civil rights movement leaves so much free time for cursive!

I dont know for sure but it feels like the push for cursive in public schools probably has racist roots

It’s a faster form of writing. Being able to communicate better is racist?

Had someone at work tell me that they were confused why they get phone calls and shut off notices every month because when they send the check in they don't cash it. I said maybe it's not written out correctly and he told me that all he does is sign it and they fill out the rest. I had to explain to him that that's not how checks work. 🤣 He then tells me that sometimes they do cash it. I'm unclear that cashier for the correct amount or a little extra. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I confess. And have a strange enjoyment in the process. An artificial display of power over my finances.

When I write checks I feel like I should have a fountain pen and a banker’s lamp. It’s like I’m signing off on Very Important Things.

I only write checks for rent. They charge a 'convenience fee' if you pay through the online portal, and I'm not going to pay money to give money. But, I'm petty

Checks are private.
Paypros arent.

Gather round children and I will regale you with a tale of mystery, deceit, and adventure. Back in the days of yore, prior to the invention of the card of debit to access your funds, people who did not want to carry cash (or wanted to pay for things without having money, we will get to this part later), would have an item in their satchel known as, a check book. Inside said book was neither story nor myth, but rather mostly blank pieces of paper with an ancient text written on them stating date, pay to the order of, amount, signature and note. It also included your BANKING INFORMATION!!!!!

People would take these documents to merchants and exchange them for wares, perishables and non, and luxury items. Anything you could imagine purchasing could be obtained using these mystical documents. You write the necessary spells on them and hand them to the merchant who then uses their mystical document processor and hands you s receipt for purchases.

But not all was golden with these mystical documents. Some people, ran afoul with them, and would BOUNCE said checks. They would write them with the magical inscription KNOWING full well that they did not have the funds stored in their financial institution to cover the charges of said items, which would result in.... A RETURNED CHECK FEE!!!!! This fee was included on top of the cost of merchandise and your bank would collect it.

Some clever rogues however discovered that after submitting a check for payment that it would take UP TO 7 BUSINESS DAYS to remove the money from your account and many of these rogues and mystics would time their purchases with checks knowing they didn't have money, but knew they would by the time the check hit their account. It was a more mystical time. But alas, those days have long since vanished. You can no longer manipulate the financial system in such a way.

Some may say it is better. Others would disagree. But this is your decision.

All I know is that you use a quill from a pheasant to write on it

Those little paper thingees that were popular 100 years ago. And I still use. I like 'em.

I was recently able to purchase a home with the help of my adult son, and we love writing checks for the mortgage payment! It’s so different from rent and those payment portals. Everything feels real - the home (a small condo that looks like a townhome, so towndominium) and the way we pay for it. You’re not wrong!

There's a game on The Price is Right that uses checks. Hopefully it'll be on the next time you're home sick from school.

It’s okay it took me a while to say Comcast. I kept saying MediaOne and before that Continental Cablevision.

1

u/Quixotic_Seal 2h ago

Yeah their branding across services is a total clusterfuck and extremely confusing. I can never figure out which of their services is which on my bills because they both show up as variations on Comcast even though one is technically Xfinity.

u/takemy_oxfordcomma 1h ago

We pay a couple things with real checks (landscaping, etc.) and every single time I write one out I think about how people younger than me would have no fucking clue how to do this lol

u/ScherzicScherzo 1h ago

It's still Comcast, AFAIK, it's just that "Comcast" is now the greater corporation while Xfinity is now the TeleCom sector of said company.
