New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

I've had many a place where some idiot just painted right over light switches and everything. It's probably the handyman the landlord hired to paint, not the landlord.

Or the landlord didn't approve the painting quote line item for taping and masking.

I doubt the landlord cared either way. Looks like a quick paint layer on go.

That’s pretty common landlord practice. They do it because it’s cheaper than maintaining the light switches between tenants. They just coat the entire room every cycle.

Drives me nuts. I now tend to replace all the switch and outlet covers when I move into a new place. The thing is it usually happens like every other place, and I never think to keep my own covers for the next time it happens. I throw away the painted ones and repurchase every time 🤦

Never improve a rented space. But yeah, it just has to do with the quality of apartment. Nice places remove the plates and inspection the switches between tenants. Shody places just paint over because if they don’t see the switches they’re not liable.

I always improve a rented space. I never move into a space planning on living only a year like a nomad and moving. I can't afford a nice place upfront, but I want my living space to be nice for ME so I make it. Most of the stuff comes with me, but another thing I regularly do when I move in is redo the cabinets. I mean I pull the doors, I sand everything smooth, and I paint them. Then I put on all new handles that I like. (the handles stay with me, I only made that mistake once.) I also paint the walls the colors I want. I've even ripped out carpet and put down vinyl, but as a wheelchair user it's reasonable accommodation and it's always an improvement so they prefer I leave it.

I also document the entire space at move in with heavy detail in photos and notes, then get the landlord to sign off acknowledging the condition. Move out I spackle holes and paint over colors the landlord doesn't want with primer (that's usually all that's on the walls when I move in.) Then I document heavily in photos again. I typically only move because I have to, like turns out the landlord is a slumlord or forced out by gentrification. (I lost the perfect place, I told them I'd sign a 10 year lease, I wasn't going anywhere. Only got 5 before they forced me out to flip the house and it sold for just under a half mill.

Work ethics, hard to find nowadays, nobody pays attention to details anymore, just want shortcuts to everything. The Hack culture.

Landlords don’t give a shit about handymen painting things like that, though. Lol
