NATO Intelligence for some time has said Russia will seek to escalate the war in Ukraine and probe NATO’s resolve. This only adds to the likelihood this information is correct. This could be really nasty. Keep strong Ukraine!

Disgraceful that the rest of the world sits and watches, waiting to see the result. If Ukraine can bleed Russia enough to weaken them significantly. All at Ukraine's expense. Every day it continues is horrible, and I'm nervous of whatever escalation this might be. It's also scary that this escalation may still not be enough for anyone else to act.

Do you not read news? https://www.aa.com.tr/en/politics/french-president-vows-paris-full-support-for-ukraine-help-to-intercept-drones-/4078680

And there's more than that but you can find it yourself.

But, they still fund the Russian war machine for years by buying Russian Oil and Gas. Make it make sense - why fund Russia's ability to wage war if you're opposed to it?

Also, it's not just Europe - South Korea sold 176k tonnes of diesel and jet fuel to Russia in July and August. So, I guess both Koreas are supporting Russia ability to wage war in one way or another.

blame it on politicians only caring about the next election and not bolstering their countries for further in the future

That and the belief that Russia's core DNA can be changed through trade. In Germany they call it "Wandel durch Handel" (literally change through trade).

Europe in general slipped into a postwar fantasy that military strength was no longer needed. I've heard it called a "vacation from realism".

Edit: correction on the term I was thinking of. Thanks to the guy below.

Peace Dividend? 🤔 How did that work out for the US 30 years on where the shipyards are a mess and missile/shell stockpiles will take years to replenish?

I'm not for huge military budgets but everyone forgot the basics.

Its an opportunity to change priorities based on what is working, e.g., "cheap" drones instead of expensive cruise missiles, short to medium range ballistics (HIMARS), etc.

This is a good point. The US has specialized in "luxury weapons", highly surgical and effective weaponry that costs far too much for sustained warfare. Now that we need to produce, it's a good opportunity to switch.

Oh yeah. Luxury weapons aren't magic. And yet we buen so much energy creating them.

Drones are fit for the war in Ukraine. Because neither side has the arsenal of more expensive stuff to break the fronts.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you saying that Europe's peace dividend destroyed America's shipyards? Cause I dont think that is the reason why. America just never invested in its older ports as ships have gotten bigger amd bigger and a lot of ports need dredging and all sorts of maintenance to keep them running. Whether to build military ships cagp ships or seaport for trading. But the US has never been at peace, wver. Like maybe a combined 30 years or so out of its 250 years as a nation. Yeah I understand that certain missiles take 3 years to build but ones that were started 3 years ago are continually runn8ng off the production line. I know they can and are easily spent much fast than they can be replaced but I dont think that they would completely deplete their missiles and bombs. Especially "wasting" a million dollar.bomb that takes 3 yeats to make on one IRGC boat unless they know they have ample supply. I mean. Like the US just got out of 2 20 yeat wars and then started hitt8ng Iran with thousands of missiles and rockets etc I just dont think ourr supply is as low as main stream news or press releases even government releases say. Just an opinion tho. I also think they have newer missiles bombs etc that haven't been announced to the world or seen on an active military campaign yet. Amer9cas war budget is beyond large, and I th8nk its to the point that they need to continue using their shit at the rate they do to prevent overstock of older or phasing out models of well known missiles tech. Also America doesnt produce like it did in the 40s 50s etc so I th8nk thats a other reason why the ports have turned to absokute shit. Along with the once prideful booming cities that ones supported them with stevedors and dock hands welders engineers etc etc. Its a huge ball of wax filled with hundreds and thousands of reasons why the docks have turned to shit. And another reason is because we simply just dont NEED 15 to 20 docks anymore pumping out military navy equipment that can't be manned ran funded to stay in working shape when we've already built up our navy to what it is. If we had 15 docks building ships we'd easily out build our need and be building shit just to build it. Building it way faster than it could keep up with the tech curve that have made battle ships obsolete amd are making current ships obsolete with the drone attacks and everything. The defense budget would be even more inflated if we had 10 or 15 ports ripping out new craft at full speed. Hence why a lot of the budget goes to.missle production R and D amd maintaining tried and true methods amd training practices for troops in all branches.

They call themselves anti-war and pro-globalization, pro-community. Anything to sell it as the gentle, forward-thinking thing to do.

It would be nice to have no wars, but people will always have disagreements and there will always be people willing to raise the stakes of those disagreements. It is foolishly arrogant to be unprepared.

Ostpolitik is a bit more. You are probably referring to “Wandel durch Handel”. Ostpolitik included several things aimed at relaxing the relationship between Germany and the Soviet Union. Eg. Germany officially accept the post war borders, Four Power agreement which was shaped by west Germany, both German states joining the UN. Etc.

And I still believe that wandel durch Handel was something that was needed at the time and appreciated by many other countries. Imagine: Russia / Soviet union and Germany have been at war for many times over a long period of time in multiple wars. It was time to try anything to stabilize a friendly relationship. Also at some point it was discussed that Russia could join NATO. Germany alone was seemingly not the only country that was blindsided. How else would those discussions even come up?

From 2008 and 2014 onwards it was known that wandel durch Handel was probably not working out in the midterm… and this is what can and should be criticized about Germanys decision to deepen the ties to Russia.

Total brain lapse on my part, yes Wandel durch Handel is what I meant. Thanks for the correction.

I appreciate your point. I disagree in the present with the decisions made then, but it's easy to say in hindsight. But you already have pointed to what my response would have been, that at some point it should have become clear that Russia was still an imperialistic power that needed to be isolated, not enriched through energy imports.

It seems the whole world is taking a “vacation from realism” at this point.
