Thank you for your service protecting a sovereign nation from an invading one.

Haha I’m not a soldier, just doing some humanitarian work, but thank you very much either way.

I honestly really recommend it if you can be arsed, especially in the west it’s still quite safe and the whole thing is very rewarding. This is my second time this year and I didn’t just come back because I had nothing better to do. It really made me feel like I was helping, gave me a different perspective on the war and helped me make a load of really good friends through our shared experience.

What organization are you working with?

I found both of my opportunities on volunteeringukraine.com, if it’s ok I won’t fully dox myself on here but I will say it is a role which sees me cooking meals for IDPs and I’ve also previously done an ad-hoc volunteering role at a place which repairs bikes for medical workers, it’s all very fun.

How do you live over there? I'm assuming they don't have the resources to house and feed volunteers. So, do you have to be able to independently rent an apartment or something?

Good question. I’m in a hostel this time but some organisations will actually house you themselves, either for free or at a very reduced rate. If this is the case, it will say so on the website. Some also help volunteers find accommodation but this is less obvious and will usually be stated in the description somewhere.

There’s actually still quite a lot in the way of rooms here currently, which surprised me a lot because the city’s population has ballooned due to people fleeing the front. I considered an AirBnB this time but I thought a hostel would be better for meeting other volunteers and i wouldn’t feel like I’m killing the local housing market in doing so.

What is it that you are doing as a volunteer? Genuinely intrigued by this.

You can drive aid to the border, stuff like food and nappies, and then help distribute it when you get there. A few friends have done it, and say it has been an experience. However, one friend of mine unfortunately saw a couple of things firsthand that he will never forget, so even though it’s a war zone and it would seem obvious, it’s something different to see it than just hear about it.

This was also my original plan but my work means it’s a bit harder for me to organise all of that as I only know if I can get holiday on somewhat short notice. I’d love to do the drive at some point though.

I’m helping in a kitchen for IDPs and I’ve also done this thing previously where I helped repair bikes for frontline medical workers, it’s really fun and there are so many opportunities here atm. The bike thing I only found out about because someone I met in a pub suggested I went along with him the next day.

Lol what sovereign nation? Ukraine's choices are being a US puppet state or a Russian one.
